Since some of you missed the entire main point. Let me break it back down.

The PS3 costs basically around $800 dollars to make. They lose money with every single one that they sell! Look at the hardware they have in that thing. The PS3 = a discounted computer. They fucking drop the price cause they know that console gamers are so spoiled that charging the full price would be bad for business. Shit enjoy the ass-kissing Sony and Microsoft are doing now because in a few years when people are more comfortable with shelling out that kind of cash for the next-gens (assuming consoles don't go the route that the Nintendo Wii is going with), you're going to be paying computer prices.

But actually recoup when games are sold.
While it does have computer parts I wouldn't go as far as to say it is a discounted computer. Do you see these things running linux or xp pro? Do you see people running Cubase Sx on a PS3? No. In addition, I've built computers for recording music that exceed the ps2 price tag by more than double. Where does the discount come into play?

If the parts are expensive the box is going to be expensive. If the parts take up a lot of room (as mentioned in the article) they usually cost more. Now, how many people do you know shell out big money for computers? The only people I know who shell out big money for computers are studio owners, graphics workers (which includes video work), people who run servers and a pc gamers. If you think the average console gamer is going to shell out more and more money for a new box you have another thing coming. Remember the neo geo and 3DO?

sony is basically setting the bar for console prices in teh future......now, mocrosoft will set a high price next system.....(which they are already workin on....rumored at least)

PS3's already got that shit where you can only play the games on one system, meaning you can't take, say Madden, over to a friend's house, and play it on his PS3. This means no renting games, and no gamefly.
Please do some research on these new systems, and not just blindly buy a PS3 because it's from Sony.

they left out the mech assault games, Kingdom under fire and a few other great games. Im not that fussed as i never had an xbox so the only games i play are 360 games apart from Ninja gaiden Black, Crimson Skies and Halo 2.

Some 200 software titles out of 8,000 sold for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation have problems running on the PS3, said a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
"We don't want to call them defects, as the problems are sort of inevitable when introducing totally different hardware.
"The type of problems vary from software to software. In some cases the only problem is no sound, and in others the screen freezes up. We're working day-and-night to provide software to solve the problem," she said.
The problems were revealed just days after Saturday's sell-out launch of the hugely anticipated new console.
Sony has suffered technical problems with the state-of-the-art new machine and was forced to delay the global launch by about six months due to problems with the high-definition DVD player, and again in Europe until March.
Sony has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into PlayStation 3 and its success is considered vital to the iconic company's future following a series of setbacks, including recalls of millions of faulty computer batteries.
With just 100,000 PS3 consoles available on launch day, the PS3 quickly sold out as people queued up all night for the prized new machine, which Sony had previously said was compatible with PlayStation and PS2 games.
