Well if Aliens had anything similiar to humans inherent inquisitive nature, what would we do if we found Aliens? Leave them alone? I think not...

If we found aliens that we could exploit we would exploit them. But again I don't think they care so why would they do any research. As of now they most likely know everything about us already. They are capable of interstellar travel so studying us would be like us studying a non invasive bacteria in an isolated cave that we already know everything about.

Oh as far as solar energy goes they may not need it by why wouldn't they use it? Its the most pervasive and easily accessable form of energy in the universe.
