Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was named Diet Pepsi rookie of the year today in a vote of NFL fans.

This is just the latest honor for Peterson, who previously was named the Associated Press offensive rookie of the year and is one of seven Vikings headed to next week's Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

An emotional Peterson thanked his teammates, coaches and especially running backs coach Eric Bieniemy "for staying on my back and continuing to push me."

Peterson rushed for 1,341 yards during his first season with the Vikings, including a 224-yard performance at Chicago that he called "a breakthrough game."

He later set an NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards against San Diego.

"It was a special day," he said. "It was a wonderful day and a day I'll always remember."

Asked how he plans to spend his free time in Hawaii, Peterson said: "Just really enjoy myself and maybe hula dance."

The only question that appeared to throw Peterson dealt with what he would do if he were in charge of the Vikings' draft. (After a brief delay, he said he would need time to sit back and evaluate things first and then make a decision.)

This year's other four finalists were wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (Chiefs), running back Marshawn Lynch (Bills), offensive tackle Joe Thomas (Browns) and linebacker Patrick Willis (49ers).

sorry niner fans

I say Peterson deserved it because in his first year he set an NFL record with all those yards against San Diego.... he was servin' (leading the league in rushing) until he got injured. He also served Chicago as well... I say Pat Willis deserved to be placed 2nd... he had a good year too.

Peterson runs behind one of hte top 5 offensive lines in the nfl. splits carries with chester and didnt play every game.

willis on the other hand played every game on a bad niners defense (stat wise) and even played with a broken hand in a cast. when willis went up head to head with peterson in the vikings vs 9er game, peterson only had like 13 yards and willis had 10+ tackles.

offense and name power won this award.

1300 yards, the NFL record for rushing yards in one single game (296) and an average of over 5.5 yards a carry won Peterson the award and deservingly so.

IFYM how could you say Peterson was incosistent when every 2 times he touched the ball he got a first down?

That one game boosted his average, and it was just ONE GAME. 1300 yards is not spectacular either, regardless of whether or not he was injured.

That being said, it is no surprise that Peterson won. He's an offensive player who did well. That beats a stellar defensive player every time in the eyes of Associated Press voters. I wasn't expecting Willis to get this award.

I'm not saying Peterson isn't deserving, just pointing out some things.

What one game? When he rushed for over 200 against the Bears or damn near 300 against the Chargers? And these were good defenses he served.

For one, AP was injured for 2 games...wouldnt that further solidify his award? Ya know, 1300+ yards in only 14 games. On TOP of all that, AP SHARED duties with Chester, and STILL got 1300+ yards.

Unlike Willis, AP cant play with a fucked up leg, being a RUNNING BACK and all. Matter of fact, if AP had the same injury as Willis, he would have a real difficult time playing too becuase RB's need both hands to run effectrively. See Shaun Alexander.

Yes, that was the sound of your argument being deflated.

:knockout:

I agree with "fucked someones mom" Peterson easily wins this award!! Dude was a monsta sharin carries and still hitting 1300 and if hadnt got hurt he would led the league in rushing!! Not to mention he almost led a weak Minnesota team with no passing game to the playoffs unlike Willis!! AP hands down and they got the pick right!! Got Em!!
