i focus on one beat when i write, if i get stuck ill just stop writing and come back to it in an hour or 2.

as for the punching...every 2 bars is hard to believe and you can really hear a punch in! no matter if you have a good engineer. I do know of another style of punching which consist of dropping your 16 or 8 and if you forget one bar thru your 16 and just come back and drop it on your dubs or adlibs shit will sound cleaner then spittin your whole 16 thru!

LISTEN TO ALL THESE 100 BARS THAT CATS ARE DROPPIN......THEY DO NOT SPIT IT STRAIGHT! ITS PUNCHED IN AT RANDOM TIMES!

well i guess to each is own but the 2 and 4 bar punching in is not always detectable. trust me on this one. lil wayne does it, 50 does, eminem def does it etc....its done throughout the industry but yeah if you can get a clean 8 or 16 spitting straight thru then keep doind what your doing. for me i can spit 8 or 16 all the way but you notice a few words here and there are just not clean. you can hear the breaths and the quick switch from words to words. aye if spitting 16 st8 works for you do your thang. its not fake to punch alot its just massive perfection. thats all it is. listen to tracks on the radio on bet mtv and you will hear every word is perfect. i also have my vocals ran thru the plug-ins of waves mercury when its being mixed. this will de-ess and de-breathe and alot of other shit. not all of us are going to record the same but real professionals do alot of punching but alot of professionals also dont do alot of punching. it depends on your verse. if you can catch each word perfect with out having to hide a mistake with a double up do it............

a good atist can perfect the 2 bar punch..... prime examples... Clyde Carson and anyone who works with Dr Dre.... Dr Dre makes his artists punch every 2 bars... some people can do it.. some cant... i dont give a fuck i actually prefer breakig it up into 4 bar punches.... not only does it sound better, it takes up more time.. more time = more money for me.. =P

i can't give away my secrets when it comes to writing sorry homie but i don't think there's 1 way that everyone should record. There's hella different techniques you can do when recording and 1 might work great for 1 person and another way will work great for another person. It's all part of being an mc you gotta do you.

How many artist punch every 2 bars? KEEP IT REAL! I can see it from an engineers point of view because of the time but cmon every 2 bars! its much easier now aday with protools but i remember when the adats and the reel to reel was being used that shit would be insane!

Mid last year I started recording every 4 bars. Sometimes 2. It's alot cleaner sound IMO. When I hear a verse now, you can tell they recorded the 16 bar verse whole, because you can hear...they didn't finish saying a few words (with most artist). The most common train of thought for alot of artist is: Fix it with the ad-libs. Doesn't always work and ends up sounding bad and very unprofessional. Rap has evolved since the beginning and evolved again since the late 90's.

I mean, it's the standard all of us as atrist should be striving for...the professional sound in every aspect of the word.

As far as writing, if you are having a hard time writing for any track, you need to step your game up or quit.

I GUESS U CAN GET AWAY WITH 2 AND 4 BAR PUNCHES IF U HAVE A GOOD ENGINEER AND STUDIO, OTHERWISE ITJUST SEEMS TO CRAZY TO ME. OF COURSE I'M OLD AS FUCK AND WHEN I MADE MY ALBUMS (IN THE 80'S) IF WE DIDNT SPIT 16 RIGHT AFTER A FEW TAKES, U WOULD GET CLOWNED ON BY EVERYONE IN THE STUDIO. COME PREPARED AND HAVE YA SHIT MEMORIZED.

Oh, yeah I don't drink, or smoke when I'm recording either. I believe if your a real artist you don't need weed or alcohol to enhance anything. As an artist you should be creative from jump.

Shit, I don't do drugs period and only social drink.

Just like I wouldn't do any of the above at a regular 9 to 5, I won't do it in a recording session...it's that serious IMO.

perfectly said.....

as for the punching, i think memorizing the verse will allow you to lay your 16 perfectly. I know of a bunch of cats who can just write during the session and lay the 16 with no flaw! everyone is different!

i write 1 punchline or 4 barz at a time....i usually think of something catchy to say, and then think of 3 things immediately that rhyme with it, then i got 4 barz.....if i do dat 4 times i got a 16.....and i feel like if ur a rapper, u should be able to spit ur 16 straight unless u got overlapping barz.....thats kind of the definition of rap to me.....lol....if everybody started punchin in every 2 bars, a whole lotta niggas gon start soundin like messy marv or jeezy on tha mic wit they delivery.........

I'm not worried about anything Homie. The thread starter asked for an opinion, so I stated how I do it. I do me!
