With Bengie Molina slowly recovering from an upper quad strain, the Giants have called up top prospect Buster Posey from Triple-A Fresno. Posey is hitting an impressive .321 for Fresno, with a .391 on-base percentage and 5 home runs.
"Buster's the best catcher in our system," Bochy said. "We needed some help. We felt at this time this would give us more coverage, a little more depth."
The Giants are one game behind the Rockies in the Wild Card, and hope Posey can catch on with the teams pitching staff as well as find his swing at the plate. If he has a strong September, the Giants would be faced with the decision to let Bengie Molina walk as a free agent.
Asked if he believed that club management was sending him a "message," Molina replied, "You know what? Probably. This is baseball, and as they can tell you, it's a business. This might mean that I might not be coming back next year. Who knows? I'm ready for everything, man. I've been in the league so long. I know how baseball goes.
Molina is hitting just .256 since the All-Star break.
