Brad Penny will sign with the Giants, sources tell ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
Penny would replace Joe Martinez in San Francisco's rotation, a big coup for a team fighting for the Wild Card berth. Penny had a 5.61 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 24 starts with the Red Sox this season, but the 31-year-old right-hander is still hitting the mid 90s on the radar gun and appears to have something left in the tank. Penny will cost less than $100,000 the rest of the way, a great investment for a pitcher who could reap huge benefits from going back to the National League West. He is an immediate target for all NL-only players.
