The Product was ok, but classic? Come on now.
Yup.....A-G-2-A-KE was too, but that shit don't get mention. It be some bullshit that usually get that label of classic. Muthafuckas gave Stillmatic that label and that shit wasn't all that. That shit is about like the Mob Figaz first shit. Wasn't glorified, but the muthafucka moved and was worth the money. There's very few with little buzz that get it. Outta all the shit I've heard there's a short list that I would call classic.

A classic should serve as a standard of excellence. It should be enduring and historically memorable and represent the highest form of development.

none of the albums mentioned in this thread are classic '06 or not

Then yeah, The Product fits that build. When's the last time you had a group with its members from 2 totally different regions? That vibed like that? What some people in N.Y. would call a classic I would say was bullshit. Classics can be judged on a shitload of criteria, but there is never gonna be a consensus unless it's somebody like Pac. The Product represents a group that is well...unless I'm mistaken, the first of its kind. It's a hybred group. Development? Historically memorable? Rick Ross's shit is gonna be a classic because of what has happened in Miami during this particular era and the fact it has been a long time since the city has had a major buzz surrounding its rap scene. Stillmatic was considered a classic because of the beef implications of that era and a so-called wax battle among N.Y.'s "best." And so on....There's shit I consider a classic that slid under the radar of a lotta people, but it was historically significant to what the fuck I was doing and it pushed my development and imo a classic. Everybody has their own story and view to that degree. That's the way shit works. No disrespect, but that answer is vague as fuck.

Let's hear your idea of a classic album. I'm curious now to see who and what I'm dealin with.

In my opinion and off the top of my head:

Some examples of classic albums . . .
  • Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
  • Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full
  • Ice Cube - Death Certificate
  • Dr Dre - The Chronic
  • Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
  • NWA - Straight Outta Compton
  • Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
  • Black Moon – Enta Da Stage
  • A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
  • 2 pac - All eyez on me
  • Digital Underground - Sex Packets

you're trying to tell me that any album that has dropped this year has had even close to the impact of any of these albums? would have the staying power of any of these albums? will change the game the in the same way as any of these albums?

Alright I'm not saying that's it's that good, but I'm just thinking how different it is than anything else, and how it might influence a lot of new artists. I like it, a lot actually but I think it won't really be big for a few years after theirs already been like 20 other groups that put out similar shit. Hell or it just might be a one time thing that never catches on, who knows.

Honestly I don't think anything that has come out in the last few years has "classic" status yet, because I think only time can make something classic, "will you still listen to this 5 years from now?" if so you might have a classic.

I honestly think that Donuts will be looked as a classic in a few years. Every track on there is tight, not one filler, plus it was one of the first big instrumental releases ever, at least the first one that got widespread attention. Also the whole concept behind the CD is so original with the tracks continuously playing non stop if you have the CD on repeat. Plus the fact that he died 2 days after the release...

Can you place "Illmatic" in the same breath with the last two living Pac albums? But then again, I'mma street nig. I don't know what the fuck "real hip-hop" is son. I just know what reflects life and the shit I'm seein. I don't have the slightest idea about rhyme schemes, cyphers, or breakin kid.

Nice list. But for bullshit purposes, let's say this much, in that era, all that shit was mainstream. The best shit has been comin out of the independent circuit for a while. So you're essentially saying that unless it is mainstream and conforms to "traditional" standards then it isn't a classic. It's a new era. You sound like one of them static ass N.Y. guys that assume they have the authority to judge what's real and what's not. That's a major trek out on a limb. You might want to get a little closer to the trunk of the tree. Innovation, content, and social impact to a state region or a peoples is just as important. Let's agree to disagree and be done with it. It's not a real debate.

Your hella reachin with that statement. Whether a CD is mainstream or underground has absolutely no relevance to how good it is. IMO underground music is better becausae it hasnt been tainted by a major record label, but all those CD's on CB's lists are classics because they are original and advanced this artform to a higher level...
