CHICAGO - Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported Monday that the Virginia Tech shooter is a 24-year-old man from China. More than 30 people were killed Monday in the shooting rampage on Virginia Tech University's campus.
According to Sneed, the man came to the U.S. last year on a student visa issued in Shanghai.
Police believe the same man may be responsible for threats on campus last week, Sneed reported.
NBC News reported Monday night that the suspect was apparently not a student at Virginia Tech.
Police said the suspect has not been linked to any terrorist group.
Authorities said they know the shooter's identity, but were not releasing it, noting that the man did not carry any identification, and shot himself in the head. The suspect also had no fingerprints existing on record.
Police said they were looking into a cell phone found near his body, NBC5's Natalie Martinez reported. Investigators also said the shooter must have thought about Monday's rampage in advance. Authorities said the shooter was well-armed, with spare ammunition that he carried in his vest for easy access.
Authorities said the shooter had two handguns, and experts said it appeared the shooter knew how to use them well.
A federal assault weapons ban used to limit a 9mm gun to carry just 10 rounds, but with the ban's expiration, 9mm guns can hold 19 rounds, which can fire off as fast as you can pull the trigger.
yea i heard that too, there are gag orders and they still cant talk about it cause if they did then a whole shit load of info the cops dont want us to know would get out. the longer it takes for us to hear more about this the more likely the info is bullshit and part ofa cover up. the people who died deserve to have the truth come out so we can better prevent this in the future

On the Web site, Tech reported the shootings at opposite ends of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
The university said there were multiple victims. Government officials with knowledge of the case said there were seven to eight other "casualties."
Students were asked to stay in their homes away from windows. The campus was closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.
"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said student Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the building where shooting took place.
Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."
Officials ordered the campus closed, the second time in less than a year the 26,000-student campus was shut because of a shooting.
In August 2006, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus.
The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.
