Not sure about back then but the padding is WAY different on Amateur gloves. They feel like pillows on your fists. Most amateurs aren't very accurate punches either so they're not landing on the chin as much and head gear does also help but like Naner said, it's not that you can't knock someone out cause the ref stops a lot of fights but then again I've seen them give a count to a dude like 6 times and it wasn't stopped.
It frustrates the hell out of me that amateurs never go to the body. I know it doesn't count for points but I've seen countless dudes stopped by a body shot in the amateurs. Most of them are so winded by the 3rd round that a body shot pays HUGE dividends but these kids don't listen man. You try and teach them to go high and low and they just go in there swinging with no defense sometimes.
