Noz did a great interview with Spanish Fly a few years ago (for Red Bull? lol) that touches a lot on the early days of Memphis rap you should read it @DaGrimProphet
Hip Hop Pit Stop: The Slow And Low Sound Of Memphis’s DJ Spanish Fly
Spanish Fly was definitely a pioneer for rap in general in Memphis let alone the sound that came out of there in the 90s. Dude hardly ever get the recognition he deserves for it though.
DJ Spanish Fly flipped that shit like this
which was kinda the start of that dark Memphis sound
&
samples 2:38 of Triggaman which then that Zirk sample was sampled over and over and over lol
Neither New Orleans or Memphis would have had their distinct sound back then if it wasn't for this song
that shit was a game changer in both of those cities for whatever reason. Shit barely made a blip in NYC (Showboys were from Queens) but laid the foundation for those two Southern cities...
I remember the first time we saw the video for
too we were at that dude's spot getting stoned and doing whip-its. I already fucked with Juvie's music since first hearing him on BG's Chopper City and then his Soulja Rags album but most my friends had never heard that NO shit at that point...
