EXCLUSIVE Deontay Wilder backs Al Haymon’s plan to bring boxing back to the masses

Wilder talks to Omar Al Raisi about appearing on Premier Boxing Championship

WITH Al Haymon’s ‘Premier Boxing Championship’ series getting impressive ratings on NBC, peaking over 4 million views (and about 1 million on Spike TV), CBS, ABC and now to ESPN are scheduled to also get involved, and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is all for it.

ESPN telecasts will air live on primetime. ABC broadcasts will air on Saturday afternoon, with further details to be announced at a later date. ESPN Deportes, ESPN’s Spanish-language network, will also televise all PBC on ESPN fights as part of its Noche de Combates series.

It’s designed to have the feel of a throwback to the ‘good old days’ of boxing. Certainly, with the sport returning to free network viewing channels in the USA, and Britain, the profile of the profile of the grand old noble art seems to be on the up again.

The cards will be thrown into the air on Saturday afternoons, reviving the tradition of middle-of-the-day boxing that helped gain mainstream exposure for fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini in the 1980s.

There will always be the need for cable to generate the really big money on PPV, but network television exposure can help build the sport that can take a boxer to those heights.

Haymon has put into place a carefully designed marketing and distribution plan, designed to bring significant fights and fighters back to mainstream fans while limiting the avenues for competition, particularly for HBO.

Rapidly rising heavyweight star Deontay Wilder, represented by Haymon, would be delighted to be involved.

“Al Haymon is a great man and a very intelligent businessman,” Wilder told Boxing News. “Look I don’t really care about PPV, there is no major sport that is on a PPV system, it is expensive for general fans and limits the reach for us as athletes and for the sport of boxing in general.

“Al Haymon did the right thing to take boxing back to free TV, which will be aired live to potentially over 100m viewers. Who doesn’t want that? It’s great for the sport of boxing to go mainstream.

“We will see after my time off, what is the next step for me, I am looking forward to the big fights and to unify the heavyweight division,” the fighter – who beat Bermane Stiverne to win his title in January – concluded.

BRook: I was in the gutter after attack, now I'm better than ever!

Kell Brook steps between the ropes for the first time as a World champion on Saturday night as he defends his IBF Welterweight title at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield against Jo Jo Dan in 'Unbreakable' presented by FX World, live on Sky Sports in the UK and on SHOWTIME in the US – after fearing he may never walk again after the shocking attack he suffered on holiday in Spain in September.

Brook ripped the title from Shawn Porter in Los Angeles in August with a stunning performance in the American's backyard, but just two weeks after that win, Brook was fighting for his life in hospital after a machete attack whilst on holiday in Spain.

The unbeaten Welterweight king has made an astonishing recovery to get back into fighting shape, and Saturday night will be an emotional occasion as Brook's incredible journey continues.

"Winning the title was an unbelievable buzz and for two weeks I was flying but after the attack, I was down in the gutter," said Brook. "I was feeling sorry for myself just lying there in bed, but now I am back and better than ever.

"I've come a long way from the injury, not knowing where I would be with the leg. I've put it under severe stress in a full camp and I have had no problems with it. It was hard at the beginning but we took baby steps and slowly but surely we got up to full speed and tonight couldn't come quick enough to defend the title in my hometown – it's going to be so emotional.

"The leg is fine, I do everything that I used to do, there's no pain and it's not holding me back at all."

Brook was barely able to celebrate his triumph with the attack coming so soon after his win in the States, and 'The Special One' feels the attack took the gloss off of his achievement.

"I don't think that I got enough credit for the win," said Brook. "Before the fight people were saying that I hadn't been in with anyone and I said that after I beat Shawn Porter, 'the Mike Tyson of the 147lb division', give me the respect that I deserve. Everybody agreed but I still don't really feel I have had the respect for going into the guy's backyard and doing what people said I couldn't do and beat him, school him."

Brook was mandatory for Porter's belt and now he faces the number one contender for the strap in the Romanian-Canadian Dan. The 33 year old edged out Kevin Bizier in Quebec in December to land the shot at Brook, and the champion says that while he knows he faces a stiff test, he is only too aware of the huge fights that he could be involved in huge fights in the summer.

"Mandatories come along and you have to deal with them," said Brook. "He's earned his position like I did against Porter, so he gets his chance to take that title off me - but that's not happening. I am not looking past him, but I know that there are massive fights out there for me in the division and after I take care of business tonight, I am free to fight anyone.

"Keith Thurman is making a lot of noise these days, Brandon Rios, Andre Berto, Juan Manuel Marquez and of course Amir Khan, there's many top names in this brilliant division and I am in a great position holding a belt and sitting at the top table in the division."

Brook's clash with Dan is part of a huge night of boxing in Sheffield as local favourite Adam Etches defends his IBF International Middleweight title against Sergey Khomitsky and Gavin McDonnell continues his fairy tale story challenging Ukrainian Oleksandr Yegorov for the vacant European Super Bantamweight title.

Frankie Gavin makes his Sky Sports return as he prepares for his crunch clash with Chris van Heerden on May 9 in Birmingham. Stephen Smith and Kal Yafai continue their marches towards a World title and GB Podium squad member Charlie Edwards fights for the second time in the paid ranks on the bill.

Tickets for 'Unbreakable' presented by FX World are on sale priced £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 available from StubHub here

Dirrell v DeGale heading to Boston on May 23

American Andre Dirrell and Briton James DeGale are set to battle it out for the vacant IBF super middleweight title on May 23rd in Boston.

The two highest available contenders have been pitted together to decide who will follow Carl Froch after 'The Cobra' decided to drop the belt instead of meeting compatriot DeGale in the UK clash.

Earlier this month, Warriors Boxing won the purse bid to stage the contest with a bid of $3.1m meaning Dirrell gets home advantage for his second attempt at claiming a version of the 168 pound championship. Back in 2009, 'The Matrix' lost out to Froch in Nottingham for the WBC title and has now avoided a return trip to the British Isles when he faces Olympic gold medallist DeGale in the spring.

That loss to Froch remains Dirrell's only defeat to date as the Michigan fighter clawed his way back into contention with victories over the likes of Vladine Biosse and Derek Edwards following a year out of the ring in 2012.

DeGale has also lost just once when on the wrong end of a split decision against George Groves in 2011 and could set-up a rematch with his nemesis if he can follow stablemate Kell Brook in travelling to the US to win the world title.

AMIR KHAN BREAKS DOWN MAYWEATHER VS. PACQUIAO; RECALLS FLAWS HE NOTICED IN PACQUIAO WHILE SPARRING
By Ben Thompson | March 27, 2015
AMIR KHAN BREAKS DOWN MAYWEATHER VS. PACQUIAO; RECALLS FLAWS HE NOTICED IN PACQUIAO WHILE SPARRING

"In that fight, I've really got Mayweather. I think Mayweather, hands down, will take the fight. Obviously Manny's been in a lot of wars. I think five years ago, it would've been an exciting fight to watch. They were both at their peak. But since then, Manny Pacquiao's been knocked out. He's had two bad losses and he's had a lot of wars. It breaks down a fighter, having a lot of wars; back-to-back wars and tough fights and tough training camps. I think that's affected Manny," stated former world champion Amir Khan, who shared his thoughts on the long-awaited May 2 mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. According to Khan, who sparred several times with Pacquiao in the past, there are certain flaws and tendencies in the 8-division world champion that Mayweather will be able to exploit.

"He likes to tap, tap, tap his feet and then jump in with a combination. When Manny stops his feet, you know he's going to throw a punch. He'll stop moving and you know the combination is going to come. Otherwise, he won't move. I think Mayweather will be smart and take a big stride back and catch him with hooks and straight punches. But I think with this fight, he's going to come to Mayweather with a different plan. He'll think his hand speed and the work rate will win him the fight," Khan explained during a recent conversation with FightHype.com. "I think he'll get caught a lot in that fight. you know, Mayweather can catch you, but I think it could be a tough fight for Mayweather depending on how Mayweather comes. Mayweather has to really put on a lot of pressure, like he fought against Mosley. He was walking forward, defending and then fighting. Mayweather doesn't fight like that anymore with that pressure. Now he's more back to normal again."

Based on the success that he had with him in sparring, Khan is not confident that Pacquiao will be able to execute a game plan that Mayweather hasn't already diffused before. "The way I see it, Manny Pacquiao is going to come to Mayweather like Canelo did. He's going to rush at him and use his feet, foot work, and angles and stuff, but angles are only going to work on an opponent if he stands in front of you and Mayweather is not one of them fighters who stands in front of you. It's single shots that catch Manny as well. Combinations, he only gets caught with a shot in between, but when you throw single one-two's, you always catch Manny," Khan continued. "I mean, I was never hurt in sparring by him. He is strong. I mean, I've seen him spar with Shawn Porter and Shawn Porter used to have his way. Shawn Porter, you know, he's the same size as Mayweather. Manny doesn't seem as strong as he used to be. Manny, to me, doesn't seem like he hits as hard as he used to hit and his body is not like it used to be. Obviously he's getting older as well. With age, he's not going to be as affective and he's not going to be as explosive as he used to be. That's why I said five years ago, it would've been a different fight."

Stevenson v Kovalev purse bid set for April 17 in Mexico
Initially requested by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) to ensure the required time to prepare for a major event like this super fight, the WBC agreed to host the purse bid on Apr. 17 in Mexico.

The winner of this purse bid will have an advantage over the other promoter in terms of determining the date, place and television network for the light heavyweight showdown. Each group will split the bid equally on a 50-50 basis.

Before the Stevenson (25-1, 21 KOs) vs. Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) rumble can happen, though, both fighters must win their next bout. Stevenson, the Haitian-born Quebecer, has to successfully defend his WBC and The Ring crowns April 4 in Quebec City against Cameroon native Sakio Bika (32-6-3, 21 KOs), while Kovalev has 90 days to execute a mandatory defense of his IBF belt against Frenchman Nadjib Mohammedi (37-3, 23 KOs) at a place to be determined.

Stevenson's promoter, GYM president Yvon Michel, is excited by the possibility of promoting what could be the biggest light heavyweight brawl of all-time. "We went ahead because Adonis and his team (adviser Al Haymon and head trainer Jevan Sugar Hill) wanted this awesome fight to happen," Michel explained. "My boxer (Stevenson) wants to give his fans, not only from Quebec but from around the entire world, the fight they really want.

"Adonis was unfairly accused of ducking Kovalev last summer but his ultimate goal has always been to prove he is the King of the Light Heavyweights."

"Everybody talks to me about Sergey Kovalev," WBC, The Ring and lineal world light heavyweight champion Stevenson added. "I am fully focussed on Sakio Bika right now, but I really want to unify the titles. I am the king of my division and ready to prove it."

The 37-year-old southpaw, fully confident of winning all the major world title belts, also noted, "In fact, the two titles (WBA and IBF) that Bernard Hopkins lost to Kovalev were supposed to be mine, but Hopkins ran away to HBO rather than fight me."

With the help of the WBC

Sanctioning bodies rarely allow champions of other organizations to be part in its rankings. In this case, however, the WBC made an exception and stated that, at its 52th annual convention last December in Las Vegas, the Kovalev vs. Jean Pascal bout winner would be the mandatory challenger for Stevenson's title.

The importance and magnitude of a fight with all the titles of a single division at stake influenced the WBC Board of Governors to make that decision.

"That was an excellent strategy by Kathy Duva (president of Main Events and Kovalev's promoter)," Michel commented. "Adonis is now obligated to face Kovalev in a unification bout, guaranteeing a simple process without long, unnecessary bargaining. Our champion won't back down, the countdown has just started."

That is going to be one crazy ass purse bid, I imagine both parties will put up huge money. If Haymon loses, would he make Stevenson drop his title like he did for Peter Quillin? If Haymon wins, would Kovalev fight Stevenson on NBC for his PBC boxing series, Showtime or PPV? If it's a PBC boxing fight, imagine if Kovalev wins. Does Haymon then try to sign Kovalev and get him away, or buy out his contract from Main Event? All this stuff is almost as interesting as the actual fight, the ramifications of it all...

Golden Boy Sues Jhonny Gonzalez For $1Million Conspired With Manager/Promoter Al Haymon

jhonny gonzalez gary russellBoxer Jhonny Gonzalez and his Mexican promoter Promociones del Pueblo conspired with manager/promoter Al Haymon to violate Golden Boy’s exclusive rights to promote Gonzalez, a bombshell complaint filed today against the fighter and the promotional company contends.

Despite Golden Boy’s repeated attempts, Gonzalez, Promociones del Pueblo and Haymon repeatedly refused to put on tomorrow night’s fight between Gonzalez and Gary Russell, Jr., until they cut Golden Boy out of the process, clearly violating the agreement between the boxer and promoter.

“Golden Boy’s contract with Jhonny Gonzalez couldn’t be clearer – the company has exclusive promotional rights for two years or four fights, and neither of those milestones has been reached to date,” said Golden Boy Spokesman Stefan Friedman. “Furthermore, the motive behind the defendants adamant and longtime refusal to match Gonzalez with Gary Russell, Jr is now plain for the world to see. We will vigorously fight to ensure our contract is enforced.”

Golden Boy is seeking damages of no less than $1 million and for the court to enforce the company’s existing contract with Gonzalez.

According to the complaint:

“In December 2013, Golden Boy entered into a written agreement with Gonzalez and DPP wherein Golden Boy obtained the exclusive right to promote Gonzalez’s professional boxing matches throughout the world for a period of two years beginning on the first bout conducted pursuant to the agreement, or four fights, whichever comes first (the “Agreement”). The Agreement further provides that Gonzalez will not take part in any professional boxing match prior to the first bout conducted pursuant to the Agreement.

In August, 2014, Golden Boy proposed that Gonzalez fight Gary Russell, Jr., a promising featherweight boxer in either November or December of that year. DPP initially ignored this proposal and then rejected it, preferring to have Gonzalez fight a lesser opponent, Jose Arce, in Mexico in October.

Thereafter, Golden Boy continued to try and find appropriate fights for Gonzalez. However, DPP consistently refused the fights proposed by Golden Boy for Gonzalez.

In February, 2015, it became clear why DPP was refusing all of the fights proposed by Golden Boy for Gonzalez. DPP was conspiring with Russell’s manager/promoter, Al Haymon, to put together a fight between Gonzalez and Russell in which Golden Boy would not be involved.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny Pacquiao Fight Poster

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny Pacquiao Fight Poster

WrestleMania 31 is this Sunday and it is the biggest night in sports entertainment. This event is the culmination of the wrestling calendar as all of the biggest names on the WWE roster do their best to produce a moment in sports entertainment history that will stand the test of time.

What makes this event so huge in the eyes’ of wrestling fans such as myself is that the WWE goes all out to produce the best event from top to bottom. The matches are hyped for weeks and every wrestler knows that they have to bring their A-game.

In the spirit of WrestleMania, I have comprised a fantasy boxing card that would be the equivalence to boxing’s own version of a WrestleMania. This is a card that is stacked from top to bottom and includes a variety of different weight classes to give everyone something different and fulfill the interest level of all kinds of sweet science fans.

Remember, this isn’t just about throwing the best fights on one card. This card has to reflect a variety of different style matchups, outside the ring elements, and circumstantial prizes.

I now present to you, BoxingMania:

Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao:

It begins and ends with a matchup between the two most noteworthy fighters in the sport. Mayweather and Pacquiao are true headliners. WrestleMania is all about culmination and there is no fight in the sport of boxing with more build up and demand than Mayweather-Pacquiao.

The one aspect that makes this fight the headliner worthy of BoxingMania is that it has a heel (bad guy) in Mayweather and a babyface (good guy) in Pacquiao. This is a very necessary element in a true headliner. The one correlation to be made with this fight and past WrestleManias is Mayweather’s undefeated streak. It can be compared with the Undertaker’s coveted WrestleMania streak, which ended last year at the hands of this year’s headliner Brock Lesnar. The difference is resume as the Taker has run the gauntlet throughout his WrestleMania career whereas Floyd has faced off with far fewer Hall-of-Famers.

I may have cheated a little with this fight because it isn’t a fantasy anymore, it will happen on May 2nd. The fantasy part is the undercard because Mayweather-Pacquiao’s will be dreadful.

Miguel Cotto vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez:

This fight is the epitome of BoxingMania because it offers us a true headliner type fight in the co-feature’s spot. This fight could be a PPV all by itself and it would do well, but the point of BoxingMania is to go all out. Besides, as great of a fight as it is, Cotto-Alvarez is clearly second to Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Cotto represents the Undertaker’s role at past WrestleManias because Cotto is that veteran with a dedicated fan base, but he isn’t as active as he used to be. True, Cotto is the lineal champion, but he isn’t in the business of being a true defending champion that fights worthy opposition in his weight class. Like the Taker, Cotto shows up to get the biggest money possible and there is little need for buildup, although a fight with Canelo has garnered its fair share.

Canelo represents that opponent looking to capitalize off of a big win on a glorified stage, much like Taker’s past opponents.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Deontay Wilder:

You got to have the big guys. From Andre the Giant to Diesel, WrestleMania has always had the big guy element. Now, usually they’re facing off against men that were undersized and looking to slay a giant, but you get the point.

Klitschko-Wilder also offers up the classic USA vs. the world element. This year John Cena takes on Rusev to fill the void and gain some cheap chants of “USA, USA, USA.” Wilder would represent our American aspirations as we hope to recapture the lineal heavyweight crown. Unlike the scripted nature of wrestling that will most likely have Cena win back the United States championship from the Russian Rusev, Wilder would probably fail to bring the title back home.

Danny Garcia w/Angel Garcia vs. Shawn Porter w/Kenny Porter:

Having a tag team title match is a must for WrestleMania, but boxing doesn’t have tag team matches. The closest thing to tag teams in boxing is probably father-son teams where the son is trained by the father. They usually don’t work, but a matchup between Garcia and Porter would represent two of the most successful father-son combinations in boxing today.

Obviously Porter is a welterweight and Garcia is a junior welterweight titlist, but that’s what makes this a “fantasy” fight card.

Angel is responsible for some of the greatest press conference moments in the last several years and Kenny is extremely thorough in his candidness. Both men have become mouthpieces at times for their son/fighters, but they’ve done it in calculated ways. Neither Danny nor Shawn have a problem letting their father’s play a role in the media, but more importantly the fathers’ of these two fighters have found ways to get their sons to respond.

Carl Froch vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.:

The global aspect of WrestleMania is an important aspect and this fight offers up a clash of worlds. Froch represents a continent of fight fans that are as loyal as they are loud, they would show up in grand fashion. Chavez Jr.’s fan base is quite possibly the reason that boxing will never die. The two would bring in a fans from all over the world.

Brandon Rios vs. Josesito Lopez:

Wrestling has “hardcore matches” where everything goes and pure wrestling goes out the window as both men find whatever they can to hit each other with. Boxing has men like Rios and Lopez who will refrain from making the science sweet and focus on hitting each other with punches in bunches.

There were so many fighters that would make great matchups and I was pretty close to choosing Marcos Maidana vs. Lucas Matthysse, but I think Matthysse’s power neutralizes Maidana’s chin. Rios and Lopez will be fun and neither man will allow the other’s power to dictate the fight.

I don’t know if it goes the distance, but whatever ends this night early for either man would be devastating.

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez vs. Naoya Inoue:

Just as necessary as the big guys are, so too are the little guys. This fight represents a matchup between the two best fighters at the smaller weight class. The WWE used to have a “cruiserweight” division, but it was obviously different from boxing’s division in that the typical 185lb wrestler is much smaller than a 185lb fighter. Most wrestling cruiserweights were 5 foot nothing wrestlers with the ability to fly high and do acrobatic moves that the bigger guys cannot do.

It might not be the slugfest that could be offered up between Gonzalez and other veteran fighters like Giovani Segura, Tyson Marquez, and Brian Viloria, but it is the kind of quality that exists in matchups that don’t involve fighters with too many miles.

**************

So that is the card in its entirety. The case can be made that Ward-Golovkin and Kovalev-Stevenson are deserving, and they are, but again, this is about covering all the angles.

If this was a like wrestling, I suppose I should “call” Mayweather-Pacquiao’s match and it would go something like this:

Mayweather in pure defense mode first 3 rounds
Pacquiao gets frustrated at the end of four and low blows “Money”
Mayweather puts some offense and surprises Manny with a check hook that floors “Pacman”
Manny gets up and begins to cut off the ring, but Floyd finds his way out.
Floyd is out boxing Manny through 6
Between rounds Roach tells Manny “you’ve got to find a way, son. Do it for your country
Manny rallies and begins unloading vicious combos
Manny has Floyd trapped against the ropes in the 10th and ref close to stopping it
Manny and Floyd head into the 12th when all of a sudden Al Haymon makes his way to the ring
Haymon is on the ring apron and Arum begins pulling on his leg
Haymon calls out for Floyd and Floyd looks over
Manny knocks out a distracted Floyd
Haymon crosses Floyd, Pacquiao crosses Arum, the two were in cahoots
Cue music, Khan cashes in his “Money in the Bank” briefcase
Haymon tries to interfere, De La Hoya comes out and punches Haymon
Khan beats Pacquiao to become the new cash cow of the sport
Lampley loses his shit

Told you all weeks ago that this was going to a purse bid. Stevenson is taking charge and his man said important facts that can't be disputed.
That's good to hear he grew a pair. Now lets see how the purse bid goes, will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Probably the most interesting purse bid I can think of in recent times. I give Stevenson his props if it goes through and I'll retract my previous insults I've thrown in his way.

We know for a fact the man was unfairly accused of ducking Kovalev. Even when the emails and fine print were presented, and Duva went SILENT after they were presented, people still ignored the facts. We know for a fact Hopkins was not transparent with his date and we know for a fact he took the Kovalev fight to make the lawsuit go away. Do we know for sure Stevenson would have won? No, but the facts are it is Hopkins who avoided the fight and did so for monetary reasons (lawsuit and money.)

The man will go through with it.

In all honesty, Main Events will probably lose the bid intentionally and probably won't fight Stevenson at all. They don't want to give Stevenson a hefty payday plus Kovalev's money is secured with HBO. All the money is fighting vs Kovalev not Stevenson so there you have it.
