International Superstar Golovkin TV Ratings: 1.433 million in US, 6.1M in Mexico, 2M in Germany
Los Angeles, CA (March 10, 2015) Boxing Global Superstar GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN has been named February’s “Fighter of the Month” by the World Boxing Council (‘WBC’

Golovkin improved to 32-0-0 with 29 knockouts, stopping #1 rated challenger MARTIN MURRAY in defense of his “Interim” WBC World Middleweight Title on Saturday, February 21 in Monte-Carlo in front of a star studded audience that included Prince Albert II of Monaco.
“I’m very happy to receive this honor from the WBC and look forward to my next world title defense,” said Golovkin who made Murray his 19th straight knockout victim while also defending his WBA and IBO World Middleweight Titles.
In addition to another knockout performance in the ring, Golovkin also continued to see extraordinary growth in his TV ratings around the world.
Telecast live from Monte-Carlo in the late afternoon with a same-day prime time replay, the Golovkin/Murray fight was watched by 1,433,000 combined viewers on HBO in the United States, the most viewed international broadcast in recent years on the network.
In Mexico, where Golovkin hosted a press conference in early December leading up to the Murray fight, 6,100,000 viewers (6.4 share) tuned in on TV Azteca to watch the telecast.
Although Golovkin has recently moved from Stuttgart, Germany to Los Angeles, California, his fight against Murray was very well received in Germany with 2,000,000 fans tuning in on SAT 1. In England, over 1,000,000 viewers watched the telecast live on Channel 5. The fight was broadcast in over 120 countries worldwide.
“We’re thrilled with these TV ratings and with the announcement of Gennady being honored by the WBC, “said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “The ‘GGG’ brand continues to grow and perform at a very high level globally and he is one of the most marketable fighters in the sport of boxing.”

Manny Pacquiao made a quick stop on ESPN’s First Take Show which is one of the few stops before he meets about 600 credentialed media in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. That will be the first and only time he will be face to face with Floyd Mayweather Jr. before he arrives in Las Vegas for fight week for his May 2nd fight.
Here are some takeaways from the interview.
Being worried for the fight:
“I’m more worried about De La Hoya and Cotto than my fight with Floyd,” Pacquiao said. “My footwork and hand combinations will be my advantage. I tell you Cotto and Margarito punch hard. This is boxing, and it’s about punches.
On Why Mayweather waited so long to make the fight:
“He’s afraid to lose,” Pacquiao said. “He took so long because he’s afraid to lose.
On why it’s important to beat Floyd Mayweather:
“I’m here to prove that I can easily beat the undefeated,” stated Pacquiao. “Beating Floyd is good for boxing. When athletes have great success, their success goes to their head. That is bad for boxing.”
While one host Skip Bayless is Pro-Pacquiao, the other host Stephen A Smith is Pro-Mayweather. He’s so Pro-Mayweather that there are pictures over his timeline mocking Pacquiao being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez quoting his tweet with.” Are you ok Manny.”
But Pacquiao laughed many of the comments off even agitating the host by saying that beating Mayweather is good for boxing and laughing at many off the comments made by Stephen a Smith.
Pacquaio ended the segment by saying, “I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years. The Lord my God that I am serving will deliver him into my hands.”

Broner-GarciaOn Saturday night, Adrien Broner took another step toward returning to the pound for pound rankings after outclassing an overmatched and seemingly shot John Molina Jr. In Broner’s third fight in a row against overmatched competition since his loss to Marcos Maidana, many questions remain regarding just how good Broner can be.
The good news is that we will not have to wait too long for Broner to be given another chance to answer those questions. Broner has confirmed with Sean Zittel of ThaBoxingVoice that he will be fighting again relatively soon.
Broner said, “I will be a world champion at 140 pounds and my next fight will be on June 20th in Cincinnati, Ohio.”
Of course, you cannot mention a championship at 140 pounds without thinking about the April 11th PBC fight between Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. Is it possible Broner could battle the winner on June 20th? It’s doubtful, but he did address the possibility of fighting Garcia in the future.
“Listen… ya’ll know my slogan. Danny’s a nice friend of mine, me, and Al Haymon will have to talk and see what makes sense.”
Adrien Broner looked very good against Molina, but he didn’t make people forget about that fight with Maidana. Without having truly redeemed himself over his last three fights, can Broner risk another loss? Garcia (or Peterson) still seems like a big risk for him at this point. I expect a pretty calculated approach by Al Haymon when choosing Broner’s dance partner for June.
First let me get this out of the way… Broner will not be fighting Danny Garcia or Lamont Peterson in June. It will be too soon after their fight with each other to even consider. Also, Broner insists on fighting in Ohio which means he would have to be the A-side. As a challenger to either one of their titles, I cannot see them making a concession like that. So what are Adrien Broner’s options?
We can probably expect Broner to take on a top 10 junior welterweight like Chris Algieri in June if Haymon is willing to work with Algieri’s promoter. Algieri is a name; he doesn’t punch hard, and he’s been in the ring with a huge name in Manny Pacquiao and pulled off a win against Provodnikov. There is just enough prestige there with very little risk to Broner. I’m not saying this is his only option, but I am sure we can expect something along these lines.
If Haymon isn’t willing to work with another promoter before PBC establishes itself as a legitimate boxing brand, we can probably expect another throwaway fight for Broner in which he easily handles an overmatched fighter. That will be the safest option for both PBC and Adrien Broner, but I don’t see it elevating the status of either of them.

Quigg has been the WBA champion for over a year now, and yet he still hasn’t fought Rigondeaux.
Hyde has petitioned the World Boxing Association to get them to force the Rigondeaux vs. Quigg fight.
The WBA has the power to do this. If the WBA opts not to force the issue, Quigg will likely face IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton next in a unification match. Rigondeaux would like to fight Frampton as well, but he’s had zero luck in getting the Irish fighter in the ring with him.
Quigg is the WBA mandatory challenger to Rigondeaux. Normally the regular champions are in a hurry to fight the Super champion, because it gives them a chance to prove that they’re not just a paper belt holder, but in this case Quigg has been in no hurry to take on Rigondeaux.
It’s starting to look like Quigg will never agree to fight Quigg unless the WBA steps in and forces the issue. Even then, it’s debatable whether Quigg will take the fight with the Cuban star.
I can certainly see a scenario where Quigg simply vacates his WBA 122 pound title, and then turns around and faces Frampton for his IBF strap.
Look at it this way; if Quigg takes the fight with Rigondeaux, he’s very likely to suffer a one-sided loss and wind up getting clowned by the Cuban defensive artist. But if Quigg vacates his WBA strap, he can at least sport his unbeaten record for a little while longer until he faces Frampton.
On the positive side, it would be good to clear out a champion who isn’t stepping up to face the best. The next WBA regular champion maybe someone who isn’t slow about fighting Rigondeaux.
Quigg has been out with an injury recently, and he’s been sidelined for a while since his win over little known Hidenori Otake last November. Otake is just one of many obscure opponents that Quigg has faced recently. In his other fights, Quigg has beaten Stephane Jamoye, Tshifhiwa Munyai and Diego Oscar Silva.
Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn has been doing a good job of digging up opponents for him to keep him winning, but the problem is the guys Hearn has been putting in with Quigg has been on the weak side and not nearly as talented as Rigondeaux and some of the other fighters in the 122 pound division.
Hyde said this to the WBA: “We are aware that there are some discussions about a bout between Quigg and Frampton. However, we have been in touch with the IBF and they will not sanction the unification fight with anyone other than the highest level champion which in this case is Guillermo Rigondeaux.”
With the IBF not agreeing to sanction the Frampton-Quigg fight, I can definitely see one of them vacating their titles so that the fight can take place. I don’t see Quigg ever agreeing to fight Rigondeaux, or at least while he’s still fighting at a high level.
It’s another thing once Rigondeaux starts showing signs of being a shot fighter. Once that happens, I can see the fighters coming out of the woodwork to want to fight him.

Greg Cohen Promotions (GCP) announces a multi-fight deal with CBS Sports Network to telecast live professional boxing.
"Championship Boxing" will debut on CBS Sports Network on April 17 at 10:00 PM, ET at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota. In the 10-round main event, Ireland's WBA #12- and IBF #11-rated "Hurricane" Dennis Hogan (20-0-1, 7 KOs) will face Philadelphia's hard-punching Tyrone "Young Gun" Brunson (22-4-1, 21 KOs) for the WBA Oceana Championship.
In the 10-round televised co-feature, Canada's world rated and fast-rising lightweight star Tony "Lightning" Luis (19-2, 7 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBC Continental Americas Championship.

Broner Accused of Driving Drunk; Assault Case Dropped

Former three-division titleholder Adrien Broner has a court date set for April 9 after allegedly driving under the influence earlier this year, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.
“Broner refused the breath test, an act that could result in his drivers license suspended for a year if convicted,” the article said.
He is facing one count of operating a vehicle while impaired and one count of committing a marked lanes violation, according to online court records.
The case dates back to Jan. 11, but apparently is only surfacing now in the newspaper because of a court hearing that was held March 11.
Meanwhile, an assault accusation against Broner from November 2014 was dismissed this past February, according to online court records.

Former three-division titleholder Adrien Broner has a court date set for April 9 after allegedly driving under the influence earlier this year, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.
“Broner refused the breath test, an act that could result in his drivers license suspended for a year if convicted,” the article said.
He is facing one count of operating a vehicle while impaired and one count of committing a marked lanes violation, according to online court records.
The case dates back to Jan. 11, but apparently is only surfacing now in the newspaper because of a court hearing that was held March 11.
Meanwhile, an assault accusation against Broner from November 2014 was dismissed this past February, according to online court records.

People aren't going to like this but it's who's available at the moment until Cotto, et al grow a pair....I was saying some weeks ago I thought Monroe was the guy that posed the most problems as far as a match-up goes and I like him but I think it's too early for Monroe, would have liked to see him get a couple more experience fights after beating Vera but it's hard to turn down a title shot.

Most recently Monroe Jr. won a 10-round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Bryan Vera on January 16 in a bout telecast on ESPN Friday Night Fights.
Monroe is currently ranked #2 by the WBA, #5 by the WBO and #9 by the WBC.

"It's very early in the process. He maintains his innocence," Broner's attorney, Will Welsh, said Thursday.
A woman who answered Broner's phone Thursday said he was unavailable.
Broner was arrested Jan. 11 at 1:30 a.m. in Sharonville driving a 2014 white Mercedes Benz at Kemper and Chester roads. Charged with drunken driving, Broner refused the breath test, an act that could result in his drivers license suspended for a year if convicted.
Broner, 25, of South Fairmount, made an appearance – and lots of money – on national television Friday night when he defeated John Molina Jr. in a lightweight division fight. He often made faces, talked to Molina and upset the crowd with his antics during that fight. The network that televised the fight also cut short the post-fight interview with Broner after he made what some consider racially insensitive comments. Previously, he was suspended by the World Boxing Council but was reinstated in July 2014.
Neither that nor the bout bothered Broner, whose nickname is "The Problem."
On Broner's Instagram account, a Tuesday post noted he's ready now for his next opponent. "No disrespect to Virgil Hunter he is a great coach and I got endless love for him but me and Amir khan can fight at the end of this month I haven't taken any punishment I'm back in the gym and ready to make a fool out of anybody "
Broner's record after Friday's fight is 30-1 with 22 knockouts. The English Woods native is a former three-time world champion now seeking his fourth title. He has won championships at 130, 135 and 147 pounds. He now fights as a super lightweight – maximum of 140 pounds.
He has fought several times in Cincinnati.
The case, before Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Lisa Allen, is next in court April 9. Broner has pleaded not guilty and asked for a jury trial.

Sanchez: We Can’t Kidnap Cotto, Make Him Fight Golovkin

Although people may want Miguel Cotto to legitimize his middleweight championship by defending it against Gennady Golovkin, Golovkin’s trainer doesn’t expect that to happen.
“I think that Miguel’s got other plans,” Sanchez said. “I think that Miguel realizes that Golovkin is just too much for him and is going in a different direction, which is fine for us. We just want to fight for the middleweight title. It doesn’t matter who it’s against.”
Cotto is the lineal champion based on his big win last year over Sergio Martinez, who had outpointed Kelly Pavlik, who had knocked out Jermain Taylor, who had dethroned Bernard Hopkins. Golovkin has world titles and is seen by many as the best at 160. Still, it doesn’t frustrate Sanchez that Cotto won’t face Golovkin. Rather, it’s a situation out of their control.
“We can’t kidnap him and force him to get in the ring,” Sanchez said. “He in his mind knows, and Freddie [Roach, Cotto’s trainer] knows that Golovkin is too much for him and will stop him in less than five rounds. They’re not going to take a chance on that. Cotto’s had a great career. There’s no reason, unless he really wants to prove that he’s a middleweight. There’s no reason to get in the ring with Golovkin. Golovkin will destroy him.”
That leaves a few other options at middleweight. Golovkin’s next defense will be a May 16 bout in Los Angeles against prospect Willie Monroe Jr., who is 19-1 with 6 KOs. There are other titleholders out there: Andy Lee will defend his WBO belt against Peter Quillin on April 11. Hassan N’Dam will face David Lemieux for the vacant IBF title in the spring.
“Gennady wants to make sure who is who at 160 pounds. He wants to unify the titles if they’re willing to fight him,” Sanchez said. “If they’re not willing to fight him, we’ll find out by the end of this year, and maybe next year he’ll move up to 168. But first things first, 160 pounds is what he wants.”
Golovkin is coming off an 11th-round technical knockout of Martin Murray, his 19th straight win by KO or TKO, moving his record to 32-0 with 29 KOs. It was the deepest into a bout that Golovkin had ever gone.
“It’s not what he showed me. It’s what he showed the fans who don’t think he can box and don’t think that he has defense,” Sanchez said. “We see that in the gym every day. It’s just unfortunate for us that fights are ending early. Murray proved to be a worthy challenger and allowed Gennady to work on some of the things that we need to practice for the future.”
