Warner Bros. Lands on Ben Affleck for 'The Stand' Feature?

It's looking as if Ben Affleck could be directing Warner Bros. Pictures epic battle of good vs. evil.

The studio has chosen Affleck to adapt and direct The Stand, Stephen King’s apocalyptic mammoth book, reports Deadline.

Affleck has become a cornerstone director for the studio, but this would be his greatest challenge yet. Even King has been reticent about the idea of making a feature of his book, which previously was turned into a miniseries. Affleck recently directed both The Town and Gone Baby Gone. Harry Potter's David Yates was the original choice.

The 1978 "The Stand" is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

I'm not too sure if I should be happy about this or not. But at least it seems that they are serious about trying to turn the book into a good movie...

i think that Ben Affleck would be able to make it. but WB would probably make him cut it down. Like for The Town his cut was over 4 hours, and it had longer action scenes, character development, but he knew that WB wouldnt want it that long so he cut it down to 2 hours 50 minutes and they still made him cut it more

it was a TV movie/mini series. All those TV stephen king movies/mini series sucked I thought.

I dunno that's the thing about his books sometimes they are just too hard to make into good movies. He's got so many of them it's hit & miss. Stand by me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, Needful Things and I guess Pet Sematary are all dope. I'm sure there are a couple others. I don't count The Shining since Kubrik made it his own dope ass movie which totally blew away King's version (with the guy from Wings starring in it lol) which was whack. Then there are a bunch of crappy ones like The Thinner, Sleepwalkers, 1408, etc etc etc.

yea lol, the first half was awesome, especially in the uncut version when he had crazy shit like black militants taking over news stations and raping people on air, then a huge televised shoot out. lol.

you're right tho stephen king will go off on some light vs dark goofy shit all the time. the whole character development wiht the good guys sitting around getting shit up and running again was like that show the colony, hella boring

Needful Things represents alotta King books turned into movies. The movie is alright, but it isn't even close to the book. If they ever made a movie close to his books, it could outshine Shawshank Redemption by far...and that's saying a lot.

i liked the first two episodes of the mini series, last two were shitty. the guy who was randall flagg was dope tho

this new could be cool. i dunno how good choice affleck actually is, gone baby gone and the town are good movies, but they're little crime stories and the stand is fucking epic and massive, so im not sure if he can make it work. we'll see

While it’s been a while since we’ve heard any movement on the project, it now appears that Affleck has now set a screenwriter on the pic. After apparently wowing the studio with an adaptation of King’s It, David Kajganich (The Invasion) has been tapped to handle scripting duties."

"When we first reported on Affleck’s involvement with the project, we had no official confirmation that he was attached. With this news, courtesy of Vulture, it seems like he’s 100% onboard for the pic. A multi-film adaptation was being eyed when David Yates was flirting with the project, but here’s no word on whether or not that’s still the plan. It may be a while before Affleck moves onto The Stand full time, as he’s currently in post-production on his most recent directorial effort, Argo."

Have you read the book? It's like more than a thousand pages. If they really want to do the book justice, they have to do this. One movie would not tell the story...

yeah and the mini series couldn't do justice, 4 1h 30min long episodes felt too short. now we get 4 probably almost 3 hour long movies. should be good. mcconaughey as flagg is on point casting
