Danny Garcia wins not by hook but by crook

Unified junior welterweight world champion Danny Garcia had already blazed his way through many of the top names in the 140-pound division: Lucas Matthysse, Zab Judah, Amir Khan and Erik Morales twice.

The little-known Mauricio Herrera has nowhere near the profile or accomplishments of any of those guys, so perhaps Garcia was taking him a little bit for granted. And perhaps Garcia's first fight in Puerto Rico, where he wanted to make a big impression because his parents were born there and he still has family there, was a bit of a distraction.

Whatever Garcia's issues were -- not to mention that the unheralded Herrera was prepared to a tee -- led to a very difficult fight for Garcia, who hung onto his belts with a majority decision victory on Saturday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, and then talked of a possible move up to welterweight.

The fight was perhaps the toughest Garcia has had in his eight-year professional career. He had all kinds of problems with Herrera's awkward style, but pulled out the decision 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114 as he retained his 140-pound title for the fifth time. ESPN.com also had the fight 114-114.

The 25-year-old Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) likely knew he was ahead after the fourth and eighth rounds. That is because the WBC, which sanctioned one of Garcia's titles at stake, convinced the Puerto Rican boxing commission to use the rule under which the judges' scores are announced twice during the bout, and Garcia was ahead both times. Open scoring is not used in the United States.

Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs), 33, of Riverside, Calif., who owns a 2011 victory against titleholder Ruslan Provodnikov, before he went on to win his belt, seemed to frustrate Garcia for much of the fight. He moved well, landed a lot of hard jabs to the body, threw more punches and landed more punches. He also connected with a higher percentage of his shots.

Garcia's saving grace, however, was that his punches were clearly the heavier shots.
"He's a crafty veteran," Garcia said. "I know every time I step in the ring every contender I fight wants what I got. So they gonna train their heart out and give everything they got, so expected that. He's a good fighter and it was a good challenge. I had to make adjustment and I'm a true champion."

According to CompuBox, Herrera landed 221 of 995 punches (32 percent) while Garcia connected on 204 of 675 (30 percent).
Herrera believed he won the fight.

"I was perfectly prepared for the fight. I was the one who had to put on the pressure. I went to make the fight," he said. "I felt I won the fight. I threw more punches. A lot of his shots weren't landing but the crowd was screaming. I thought I finished strong, too. I thought it was close but that I won the fight."

Herrera was certainly in a difficult position of trying to win the title in what amounted to Garcia's homecoming fight to the land of his heritage. Puerto Rico, one of the great boxing hotbeds, lost its only native titleholder in November when Mikey Garcia knocked out junior lightweight titlist Rocky Martinez.

Garcia, although from Philadelphia, believed he could fill the void because of his heritage. He had long wanted to fight in Puerto Rico, too, and the fans there embraced him during what was nearly a disastrous fight. But Garcia was the star of the show and seemed to get the benefit of the doubt in a fight with many close rounds.

"When you are one of the best fighters in the world, which Danny clearly is, you have a big target on your back," said Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer, Garcia's promoter. "When you fight somebody like Herrera after you've fought fighters like Amir Khan, Matthysse, Morales, guys with big names, maybe you take it a little step slower in the training. It's normal and the results are what they are. But I believe Danny won.

"I think Danny was looking for that big punch too much because he wanted to knock out Herrera and make a statement in Puerto Rico, and that is not the Danny we usually see. He had all the pressure on him fighting in Puerto Rico. It was a dream, for him and he was looking for the knockout."

Herrera's defense and movement rarely allowed Garcia to effectively counter and also prevented him from landing his best punch, the left hook, with any regularity. Angel Garcia, Danny's father and trainer, appeared to realize early on that his son might be in some trouble, yelling at him after the fourth round, when Garcia was announced as leading 40-36, 39-37 and 38-38.
Garcia opened a cut under Herrera's left eye in the eighth round, after which the scores had narrowed. The open scoring announcement had Garcia ahead 78-74 and 77-75 with Herrera leading 77-75 on one card.
Herrera cut Garcia on the bridge of the nose in the ninth round and the action heated up in the final two rounds. Garcia finally began to land solid left hooks and combinations, and they traded feverishly down the stretch.

"He was a little crafty and I had to find my comfort zone," Garcia said. "Once I found it I started pressuring him and getting him to the ropes and landing my combinations. I knew I was doing good. I just had to keep my composure and throw power shots. I was trying to knock him out in front of my fans, but he's a tough guy and he kept fighting. I know nothing is easy. I thought I won the fight."

After Garcia beat Matthysse in September on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's record-breaking fight with Canelo Alvarez, Garcia was prominently mentioned as somebody who could be Mayweather's opponent in May.

However, Garcia elected to remain at junior welterweight. He wanted to fight Herrera and then have one more defense at 140 pounds before moving up. Now that time table may accelerate.
"Fighting at 140, making weight might have affected my performance a little bit," Garcia said. "I got to sit with my camp and see about going up to 147. I've been fighting at 140 for eight years, since the amateurs. It's getting a little hard so I have to think about moving up."
Whatever division he fights in, expect to see him back in Puerto Rico.

"The way Puerto Rico has embraced him, my plan is to have Danny Garcia back in Puerto Rico," Schaefer said. "The Puerto Rican fans deserve it and I know Danny wants to go back."

Juan Manuel Marquez to fight May 17

By ESPN

When Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez was an unknown fighter on the way up in the 1990s -- long before he would go on to win world titles in four divisions, establish himself as a future Hall of Famer and engage in a historical four-fight series with Manny Pacquiao -- he was a regular on cards at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., once a boxing hotbed.
Now, after years of dormancy, the Forum is getting back into boxing and Marquez, one of its favorite sons, will headline the first card at the newly refurbished building when he takes on former junior welterweight titlist Mike Alvarado in a welterweight world title elimination bout on May 17 on HBO, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com on Thursday.
Both fighters have agreed to terms, Arum said, and the winner of the bout, to be contested at a maximum contract weight of 143 pounds, will earn a mandatory shot at the winner of the April 12 rematch between Pacquiao and titleholder Timothy Bradley Jr.
"Besides the fact that this is a tremendous fight between two exciting fighters, the thing I like most about it is the historical significance," Arum said. "They spent a lot of money refurbishing the Forum and it brings back memories of all the great fights that took place there, like when Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton there [in their 1973 rematch, which Arum promoted]. Marquez is a guy who earned his bones there. The Forum is where he established himself and this is going to be a great homecoming for him.
"I've been in this business for so long and, to me, the history is important. I'm really thrilled for my company to be re-opening the new Forum for boxing."
In 1995, in the 10th fight of his career, Marquez began fighting regularly at the Forum for the now-defunct Forum Boxing promotional company. It was there where he built his reputation and went from unknown prospect to big-time contender. The 40-year-old Marquez fought there 12 times in all.
"I think this fight has a lot of story lines," Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. "It's at the Forum and it will be raucous, and we know Marquez's history there. And, obviously, when the bell rings it'll be a hellacious fight where neither guy will back up."
Marquez and Alvarado, 33, are both coming off defeats, which adds to their urgency to win this fight.
On Oct. 12 in Las Vegas, Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KOs) lost a split decision challenging Bradley for his title, one fight after Marquez scored a massive one-punch knockout of Pacquiao in their fourth battle. One week after Marquez lost to Bradley, on Oct. 19, Alvarado (34-2, 23 KOs) lost his 140-pound world title in front of his home crowd in Denver when Ruslan Provodnikov stopped him in the 10th round of a bruising battle.
"Mike is so excited. We have been training already for three weeks. Marquez has always been on our radar and he is the one we always wanted to fight," said Henry Delgado, Alvarado's manager. "This fight is our redemption to all of our fans. Mike knows how important this fight is. We plan to relocate our training to Los Angeles this weekend. What a fight with such a reward -- to fight the winner of Pacquiao versus Bradley.
"This is really an incredible opportunity. We will be fully prepared to fight Marquez on May 17."
Said Moretti, "I think you'll see a more motivated and focused Mike Alvarado. He knows he has to perform well in this fight after the loss at home and it's also a very dangerous fight for Marquez."
Although Marquez had said that he was not interested in a fifth fight with Pacquiao, Arum said he changed his mind and would fight him again as long as Pacquiao defeats Bradley next month. The reason is because it would mean an opportunity to win a world title in a fifth weight class -- no other Mexican boxer has done that -- and he has said that is important to him. And if Bradley beats Pacquiao, it would mean a rematch for Marquez and a chance to not only win the belt but also to avenge a loss.
"Marquez wants to win that title and that's an incentive for taking this fight with Alvarado, because he knows he will get that opportunity if he wins," Arum said. "So if it's Pacquiao, he said he would fight him again, and if Bradley wins, well he wants that fight too. And if Mike wins, he certainly will be a good opponent to fight Bradley or Pacquiao, whoever wins."

RANCES BARTHELEMY JOINS THE AL HAYMON STABLE
By Ben Thompson | March 16, 2014
RANCES BARTHELEMY JOINS THE AL HAYMON STABLE

The signings just keep coming and coming. Over the weekend, undefeated super featherweight contender Rances Barthelemy also signed with influential advisor Al Haymon. Barthelemy joins IBF jr. welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, former welterweight champion Luis Collazo, light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, and former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson as the newest additions to Haymon's rapidly growing stable of fighters, which already includes Floyd Mayweather, Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner, Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, Devon Alexander, Peter Quillin, Leo Santa Cruz, Gary Russell Jr., Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Andre Berto, Sakio Bika, Chris Arreola, Deontay Wilder, and Edwin Rodriguez, just to name a few.

Barthelemey is coming off of a career-defining performance that saw him capture the IBF title with a 2nd-round knockout of former champion Argenis Mendez. Unfortunately for Barthelemey, that result was changed to a no-contest after the team of Mendez successfully filed an appeal complaining that the knockout blow came after the bell. Although Mendez was allowed to retain his title, the IBF ordered an immediate rematch, though no official plans have been set

ROBERT GUERRERO SET TO SIGN WITH AL HAYMON?
By Ben Thompson | March 17, 2014
ROBERT GUERRERO SET TO SIGN WITH AL HAYMON?

It looks like Rances Barthelemy won't be the only name revealed in the coming days as the latest Al Haymon signing. Recently, FightHype.com revealed that former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan has already reached an agreement in principle to sign with influential adviser Haymon. Now, sources close to the information have informed us that multi-division world champion Robert Guerrero will also be joining Haymon's rapidly growing stable of fighters, which already includes Floyd Mayweather, Adonis Stevenson, Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner, Marcos Maidana, Lamont Peterson, Lucas Matthysse, Chad Dawson, Devon Alexander, Peter Quillin, Leo Santa Cruz, Gary Russell Jr., Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Andre Berto, Sakio Bika, Chris Arreola, Deontay Wilder, and Edwin Rodriguez, just to name a few.

Guerrero is coming off of a losing effort against undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather in a fight that took place back in May of 2013, nearly a year ago. He was rumored to be the frontrunner to land a potential clash with former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan on the May 3 undercard of Mayweather vs. Maidana, but for whatever reason, that bout will not be taking place. Considering that several of Haymon's fighters work closely with Golden Boy Promotions, one can assume that whatever legal issues that Guerrero had with his promotional company will be resolved in the very near future and his fans can expect to see him in the ring some time soon.

Herrera wants rematch with Danny Garcia

Mauricio Herrera Garcia Herrera Garcia vs. Herrera danny garcia By Dan Ambrose: After what many people saw as a pure robbery last night in WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s controversial 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Herrera is saying that he wants a rematch at 140 lbs if Garcia doesn’t move up in weight to 147. Garcia was hinting after the fight that he may move up in weight due to the problems he had in making weight for the fight. He blamed his poor performance on his problems making weight in part.

“I don’t think Danny Garcia thought I’d come out fighting like that,” Herrera said after the fight. “I want the rematch if he’ll stay at 140. I’m hard to hit. They think I’m easy until they get in the ring with me.”

Danny is talking about moving up in weight to possibly fight Amir Khan, if Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer asks him to do that, or stay at 140. Herrera is likely not someone who is high on Garcia’s list in terms of who he wants to fight next. It goes without saying that this wasn’t supposed to be a competitive fight like this. Herrera was someone that was brought in to keep Garcia busy, and to make it an entertaining fight for Garcia to shine in front of the Puerto Rican fans. But Herrera flipped the script by outsmarting Garcia, and pushing the fight against him.

What we found out is that Garcia doesn’t fight well when a lot of pressure is put on him and when he’s not holding like he did in the Lucas Matthysse fight. Garcia did a lot of holding against Herrera, but not nearly as much as he did in the Matthysse fight. By not holding as much, we saw how limited Garcia is as a fighter. He’s not a good inside fighter, as Herrera showed us. Garcia also showed that he’s dirty at times with his low blows and rabbit punches.

Fans obviously want to see a Garcia-Herrera rematch, but they’re probably not going to get their wish. Fans wanted to see a Garcia-Matthysse rematch, and they didn’t get to see that. Fans wanted to see a Khan-Garcia fight, and that didn’t happen either. In other words, Herrera had his chance against Garcia and the judges decided that he didn’t do enough to get the win. Now Garcia will move on. I just hope that he looks better in his next fight because he looked like limited fighter against Herrera, and not nearly as good as what many people thought he was going into the fight.

Danny Garcia: I’ll fight Khan again if Schaefer and Haymon wants that
March 16th, 2014 | Post Comment - 124 Comments

Garcia Herrera Garcia vs. Herrea danny garcia amir khan (Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) said he’s open to facing former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan if his promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions or if his manager Al Haymon wants him to. Garcia defeated Khan by a 4th round TKO two years ago in a big upset.

Instead of thinking about Khan, Garcia should be more focused on erasing the controversy about his 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera last night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, in Puerto Rico. Garcia won the fight, but not too many people believe he deserved to get the decision. The judges scored it 114-114, 116-112, 116-112. However, at best, Garcia looked like he deserved to get a draw out of the fight, and that’s only if you ignored how Herrera clearly got the better of him through the crucial last 6 rounds of the fight.

“I already beat him [Khan] once,” Garcia said. “If Richard [Schaefer] and Al [Haymon] decide to make that fight [against Khan]. Sure, I’ll fight him and I’ll beat him again.”

It’s a good idea that Garcia should fight Khan in order to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., because right now there are probably few fans who would want to pay to see a mismatch between Mayweather and Garcia.

If Garcia can’t even beat a limited fighter like Herrera without controversy while fighting in front of a pro-Garcia crowd in Puerto Rico, then it’s probably not too realistic that he’ll be able to score another stoppage win over Khan in a rematch. Garcia certainly wouldn’t be able to out-box Khan to earn a decision because he doesn’t have those kinds of skills. Holding Khan and/or hitting him with low blows wouldn’t do the job. Those things worked against Lucas Matthysse for Garcia, but he doesn’t have boxing skills and he was just trying to take Garcia’s head off with every punch instead of trying to box him.

Garcia’s face was badly swollen from Herrera’s punches by the end of their fight, and he looked like the beaten fighter rather than Herrera.

While Herrera clearly deserves a rematch against Garcia, there’s zero chance of that happening. Schaefer and Haymon will move Garcia ahead to try and angle him for a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for September, although Garcia is the last person that deserves a fight against Mayweather after the way he fought against Herrera.

At this point it's easier to make list of the fighters who are not signed with Al Haymon.

I think something is clearly going on for years Haymon had just a handful of fighters, typically African American fighters (he was once asked if he'd ever sign a white fighter and hr laughed and said no). Past several months he's signing everyone from all over the world.

Yeah, seriously. He's been signing at least one fighter every month lately. He's obviously got some pull and everyone is quick to thank him in every single interview it seems like. I'd venture to say that he has as many top fighters as GBP does at this point. It'll be interesting to see if Schaefer is on his way out of GBP too and how much he really had to do with the success of the company. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a split and GBP started working with HBO again and all of the Haymon fighters stuck to Showtime. Also have to realize that just recently did Haymon fighters start facing each other. Only matchups I can think of off hand are the Matthysse/Garcia and Floyd/Maidana fights.

I wouldn't be surprised if Schaefer is the one moving to Mayweather Promotions and Al Haymon is just looking out for himself and staying neutral because the "cold war" is coming to an end. Although Showtime is showing GBP fights, they are not exclusively signed to Showtime. GBP and TR are running out of fighters to fight eachother and bigger money is to be made. The company with the bigger money is HBO and Oscar knows that. Schaefer just keeps allowing Floyd to throw jabs at Oscar and with Showtime backing up Floyd, Oscar wants to shove it down Floyds throat since he couldn't beat him in the ring. IDK but that's the only thing I can think of. Oh yeah and GGG vs Quillin and Keith Thurman can become stars can only happen on HBO

He's signed about a dozen fighters in the past month alone.

Yeah, before Haymon fighters would never face each other. The reason was in those days he was officially a manager, and it is against the Ali Act for a manager to have both of his fighters fight and get from both. Once he dropped the manager label and now goes by "personal advisor" his guys are being matched up all the time now.

Juanma: I Proved A lot To The People Who Doubted Me

by Rey Colon

This past Saturday night in Bayamon, former two-division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (34-3, 31 KO's) returned on the winning path and gave his career a new boost with a two-round stoppage of Daniel Ponce de Leon (45-6, 35 KO's) in their super featherweight rematch. Juanma was dropped in the second, but recovered and scored two knockdowns of Ponce De Leon, before finishing him off against the ropes as referee Luis Pabon jumped in to wave things off.

"I proved a lot to me people who did not believe in me. I'm super happy. I want to resume my career. We still have something. He caught me but he did not hurt me. I followed the instructions [of my corner] and I capitalized. I put him down with the same right hand [that I used on him in 2008]. I fight whoever the promoter tells me to. I have never said no. This was a very important fight for me. [Ponce] was in bad condition. The referee did his job and I did mine," Juanma said.

Mauricio Herrera Open To Facing Lucas Matthysse Next

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes

Following his close points to loss to WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, junior welterweight contender Mauricio Herrera said he was open to idea of facing another tough top contender in his very next fight - and specifically named Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32KOs).

Matthysse has a tentative return date of April 26th, which makes a Herrera fight a tough match to make with the short time span. But a summer showdown could be possible.

Herrera (20-4, 7KOs) recently signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions, making the Matthysse fight a realistic possibility. Although he doesn't have a big a knockout ration, Herrera loves to brawl. Herrera's chin is made of iron and tested against the best of his division, including Ruslan Provodnikov, Mike Alvarado and Garcia.

Matthysse, like Herrera, lost a twelve round decision in his last fight to Garcia.

Angel Garcia Doesn't Fully Agree With Danny at 147

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes

Angel Garcia, father/trainer of WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, sees no reason for his son to make an immediate leap in weight to the welterweight division.

After Danny struggled to win a twelve round majority decision over Mauricio Herrera on Saturday night in Bayamon, the two-belt champion said it might be time to move up in weight.

"If he wants to go to 147, he can. It's up to him. I think he makes 140 well. Just because he didn't have a 100% night, doesn't mean he's a bad fighter [at junior welterweight]," Angel told BoxingScene.com.

Angel is confident his son did enough to win and couldn't understand the critic who blasted the verdict.

"We got the job done. It was one of those days. It's not like he got dropped and all that. There were a lot of head-butts going on. He was using his head a lot, he coming with his head in clinches and the ref should have caught all that, but I'm not blaming the ref," Angel said.

Angulo Rips Allegations He Threw His Fight With Canelo

By Miguel Rivera

Junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo blew off the allegations that are being made by certain fans, who believe the tough boxer took a dive in his recent fight with former WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Against Canelo, Angulo did not possess the same drive, the same power or the same high punch output - that many fans saw in Angulo's gutsy loss against Erislandy Lara last June. He took a beating from start to finish, until referee Tony Weeks stopped the match in the tenth round.

After the loss, rumors began to circulate in Mexico that Angulo took $100,000 to throw the fight. Angulo received the money after Canelo was unable to make the 154-pound limit and requested a one-pound increase to 155.

"To all of the people who think that I was paid off - I've told you before that 'Perro' is not for sale. We started a little different [than we usually do]. We started slow and planned to increase in the end, but we never reached that point. Unfortunately I wanted to close hard in the later rounds and we already know that Canelo is always tired [at the end], but unfortunately what happened happened...controversy. I don't have to bow my head. I was doing my job and people know that the fight be changed with a single blow," Angulo said to Erazno and Chokolata.

"I struggled to catch my rhythm in the first six rounds, but when I started to get into a rhythm, I began to throw more combinations and connected much more on Canelo, and that's when I think [Weeks] made the decision to stop the fight because we had already begun to get in the fight. Even in the previous round, Canelo was going to the ropes with his hands down because he was tired."
