Bob Arum: No Garcia-Gamboa - Who The Fuck is Gamboa?

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK — Well, we can scratch Mikey Garcia-Yuriorkis Gamboa from our list of intriguing possibilities on the spring schedule.

Representatives for Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) and Gamboa (23-0, 16 KOs) have discussed matching them as early as May 17 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., but promoter Bob Arum doesn’t think the fight can be made.

“Mikey, we’d like to get him back in action,” said Arum, whose Top Rank Inc. promotes Garcia. “There’s nothing but silence from HBO. Garcia-Gamboa is not going to happen because, frankly, who the f*** is Gamboa? Why should he be getting as much money as Garcia? He hasn’t fought on HBO. He f***ed me in the [Brandon] Rios fight. What kind of sh*t is this? What, 50 Cent singing songs? It’s not going to happen.”

Garcia is coming off an easy but boring 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Mexico’s Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2, 20 KOs) on Jan. 25 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The two-division champion from Oxnard, Calif., said before and after he beat Burgos that he wanted to box Gamboa, yet made it clear that it was up to Top Rank and rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who promotes Gamboa, to make that lightweight fight a reality.

The 32-year-old Gamboa, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist from Cuba, hasn’t fought since he out-pointed Colombia’s Darleys Perez (29-1, 19 KOs) in a 12-round bout June 8 in Montreal.

Arum’s backup plan is to match Garcia, the WBO super featherweight title-holder, against Japan’s Takashi Uchiyama (21-0-1, 17 KOs), who owns the WBA title, in a 130-pound championship unification fight. HBO Sports executives aren’t interested in broadcasting Garcia-Uchiyama, according to Arum, who added that he’ll probably promote that fight in Macau, China.

“[Uchiyama is a] very, very good fighter,” Arum said. “He’s been a champion [for four years]. I’d like to match him and Garcia. I have as much chance of doing it on HBO as the man in the moon, so I’ll probably end up doing it in Macau.”

Bradley warns Pacquiao's tactics won't work this time

By Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN News North America

INDIO, California – In just five weeks, the highly anticipated rematch between Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and unbeaten American Timothy Bradley will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It is one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year, as boxing analysts suggest it will determine if the “Pacman” still possesses a killer instinct in the ring.

The unbeaten Bradley, who is hard at work in California, is confident he can win convincingly this time around as he already knows what to expect from Pacquiao.

“I’ve already been in the ring with Pacquiao. I know what to expect, I know what I got to do to win the fight,” said Bradley. “I know what he is gonna bring.”

“I know he is gonna try to bring the pressure on me. It’s not gonna work. Right now, it’s not gonna work. He is gonna have to definitely out-think me in there. He has to be a lot faster,” he stressed.

Bradley also claimed that Pacquiao’s performance in his November 2013 bout against Brandon Rios – a wide points win – was not impressive at all.

He pointed to his footwork, speed and boxing IQ as his keys to victory on April 12.

“My footwork will win this fight for me, and my defense,” said Bradley. “The fact that I have speed – you know, Pacquiao doesn’t fight anybody with the same speed as he is. He is a quick fighter, but I’m quick too. I’m just as quick, and I’m smarter than he is.”

Bradley’s win in June 2012 was hotly disputed, which is why he is giving it all in training to defeat the Fighting Congressman again.

“He has to be in very good shape, because like I said, I’m not gonna take no for an answer. I’m gonna win this fight,” said Bradley.

Meanwhile, although the fight is not until next month, race and sports books odds on the Pacquiao-Bradley rematch have already been posted.

Pacquiao is the slight favorite at -180, while Bradley is listed at +160. But Bradley shrugged off his underdog status.

“He was a huge favorite (in the first fight),” Bradley pointed out. “And at the end of the night, I won the fight. I beat him, and nobody was ready for it – not even the oddsmakers.”

lol at floyd the things he does to avoid a pacman fight floyd would rather sit in a prison cell then fight him
Manny Pacquiao should be worried about his upcoming fight with Timothy Bradley. Because if he doesn't get past him, he will NEVER face Floyd Mayweather Jr, NEVER. But guess what ? He won't face Mayweather because Timothy Bradley is going to retire him, hopefully Bradley knocks Pacquiao the fuck out. The Boxing God is going to punish Manny Pacquiao for taking those ROIDS, and he will use Timothy Bradley as his instrument.

Deontay thinks Haye should stay retired, but he’s willing to fight him

deontay wilder david haye By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) thinks British heavyweight David Haye’s recent shoulder injury is a result of the punishment that he’s taken since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2008. The 6’7″ Deontay sees Haye as a cruiserweight fighting in the wrong division, and he thinks Haye should stay retired rather than try to make a come back. But with that said, Deontay would be more than willing to fight Haye if he’s up for it. He’d also like to face British heavyweights Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury as well.

Deontay has a big fight this Saturday night against Malik Scott (36-1-1-, 13 KO’s) in their WBC heavyweight title eliminator bout at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

“He [Haye] should listen to his body and stay in retirement,” Deontay said to the Metro. “If he did come back he may also have trouble winning back some of his fans who felt pulling out of those fights with Fury left a disgusting taste…I would also be happy to face him in the ring…I would be more than happy to face either Fury or Dereck Chisora on their own patch. It wouldn’t worry me because I know I can beat them.”

I agree with Deontay 100 percent. Haye should stay retired, because his shoulder problem is something that could very well continue to trouble him once he gets back in the ring and starts trying to fight. I mean, he might be able to beat some of the soft jobs he’s faced in the past, but if he gets put in with a talent like Deontay, Haye would be in for a world of hurt due to the huge bombs that Deontay would be exploding on his head. In looking at clips of their sparring session together, Deontay was literally clubbing a ducking Haye with right hand after right hand while he tried to cover up against the ropes. It was painful to watch, and I can only imagine what would have been the result if Haye wasn’t wearing head gear and if Deontay didn’t have huge gloves on to soften his blows.

Trying to get Chisora or Fury to say yes to a fight against Deontay could prove difficult, and it’s probably not even worth it for Deontay to waste his breath on mentioning those fighters. I can see them showing interest if and when Deontay captures the WBC heavyweight world title later this year, but not before that. I think Chisora will be weeded out anyway either by losing to Fury or someone like Kubrat Pulev or Alexander Povetkin. But Fury is someone that Deontay can fight in an optional title defense.

Fury likely will never become the WBC mandatory challenger, because the World Boxing Council tends to make their mandatory challengers fight top caliber opposition at the heavyweight level. This means that for Fury to become the WBC mandatory, he’d have to beat someone like Bermane Stiverne or Chris Arreola, and I don’t think he could beat either of those guys.

Adrien Broner confirms he’ll be fighting on May 3rd

adrien broner By Dan Ambrose: A bearded and out of shape-looking Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) announced in a video posted on his twitter site that he’ll be fighting on May 3rd against an opponent to be determined. Broner, 24, sounded like he didn’t care who he faces in the ring on May 3rd on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Broner could face John Molina or a similar opponent. He’s not going to fight Amir Khan.

“This is the first day of training camp,” Broner said. “It’s going down on May 3rd. I don’t know who I’ll fight.”

The way that Broner make the announcement, you would think that he’s facing a quality opponent on May 3rd, but that’s probably not going to happen. He had the chance to fight Amir Khan, but it looks like he passed up on the idea of taking that fight. Showtime Sports vice president Stephen Espinoza says that Broner will be moving down in weight for his next fight.
That could be one of the reasons why he won’t be facing Khan, who is moving up to the 147 lb division and will be fighting at the full weight for the first time in his career.

Mayweather needs top names for his undercard on May 3rd in order to attract interest and to increase the pay-per-view buys on Showtime. He’s suggested that Khan and Broner fight, but that’s not going to happen. Mayweather won’t turn Broner away if he takes an easy fight against John Molina instead of a top lightweight or top light welterweight. Mayweather will understand Broner’s situation. He was badly beaten by Marcos Maidana last December, and he can’t afford to take on anyone good at 147 or even 140 after a loss like that. Broner needs to make improvements in his fighting style before he starts facing good opposition again.

In watching Broner’s mitt work, he’s showing good hand speed. The speed is there, but he’s going to need to improve his game in terms of using movement if he’s to beat the top light welterweights and lightweights. Being a stationary fighter isn’t going to help Broner beat the best fighters.

Andre Berto getting ready to return to the ring

andre berto By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KO’s) expects to return to the ring next July provided that his rehab for his injured shoulder goes smooth. Berto, 30, suffered a torn right tendon in his shoulder in his last fight against Jesus Soto Karass last July. The injury required surgery to repair the problem, and Berto has been out of action ever since. By the time he returns to the ring in July, he’ll have been out of action for an entire year.

Unfortunately for Berto, this isn’t the first time he’s suffered bad injuries, as he’s twice suffered torn bicep injuries that has consumed a lot of time while he recovered from the injuries.

“These last seven months and the whole rehab process haven’t been easy at all, but it was worth it to finally be able to get back in the ring,” Berto said. “I’m refocusing all my energy on coming back at 100% and showing all of my fans the best Andre Berto both mentally and physically. I have learned a lot during this time off and everyone is going to see all of that in my next fight.”

Berto is still young and fast enough to be successful when he eventually returns to the ring. However, he’s going to need to fight in a little more relaxed manner because he throws shots with too much explosive energy and he ends up tearing his biceps and now his shoulder because of it. Given that this is the third time that Berto has suffered a bad injury to one of his limbs in the past 4 years, it’s likely that he’ll continue to have injury problems unless he changes the way he fights. It might be better off if Berto didn’t load up so much, and if he focused on throwing rapid shots.

He’s had problems with his stamina in his fights through much of his career and this too will likely continue to be a problem for him. A healthy Berto is still good enough to beat guys like Adrien Broner and Paulie Malignaggi. He’d have a decent chance at beating Shawn Porter if he didn’t suffer an injury or run out of gas

Lucas Matthysse Isn’t Leaving: He’ll fight at 140

lucas matthysse By Isaac Brodie: A large number of the sport’s most talented and popular fighters compete between 140 and 147, but as of late it is getting harder to think of the junior middle weight division as anything more than a stepping stone, a mechanism for creating interest for future fights in its big brother division.

Since the like of Miguel Cotto, Manny Paquaio and Floyd Mayweather have moved on from the division, so too has the money and fanfare. So now when any standouts appear at 140 we immediately ask when they plan to move up and face our respective favourite. This has been exactly the case for Danny Garcia. As the undisputed king at 140he is still seen as a challenger, because in the eyes of many fans he is simply and opponent in waiting for the pound for pound champ.

And he will be. No doubt Golden Boy and Showtime will recognize the probable financial benefits that could come from this contest, and as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has proven there is nothing to loose, fans will still be happy to support Danny if he does loose. There is something about a Mayweather loss that seems a given. And with this assumption there are increasingly few options left that will encourage fans to take the Floyd’s fights seriously. Enter Danny.

This leaves Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s). As aggravating as the Golden Boys company may be in their inability (which I am not solely blaming them for) to work with Top Rank, you have to admit they are good at what they do, particularly in these divisions. This is why despite the excitement a large number of fans felt when they heard Lucas Matthysse and Keith Thurman will be fighting on the same card it is clear they will not be fighting one another. Golden Boy needs Matthysse at 140 if it to continue to exist as a vehicle for supplying fights at 147. When Garcia does move on Lucas will be their most marketable fighter at this weight. Expect to see him in regular title fights in the next two years.

Lucas will be the gate keeper. I don’t mean this in the sense that Lucas will be shot. He clearly still has plenty of good fights left in the tank, but rather a gate keeper for the super fights. These promoters will be thinking long term. Sooner or later the ranks at 147 will need to be replenished. And anyone at 140 who can get a W over will be in the prime position for the role.

In his next fight it wouldn’t surprise me to see him fighting Judah in a rematch before fighting for one of Garcia’s vacated titles. With maybe a fringe contender in between. Ideally he would be steered toward Ruslan Provodnikov in the hopes of creating a genuine toss up at the top of the division. But this seems unlikely unless Ruslan opts to sign with GB. Worst case scenario an aging Judah somehow manages to squirrel a victory from Lucas and become a gatekeeper in the traditional sense.
