I've been reading more about classic films and wanted to check some out, but I've never enjoyed an old movie (pre-1960's) that I can think of. Can anyone recommend any good classics?
heard this was a good one. i bought it for my pops he said his dad watched this back in the day... still holds up from what i hear....
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
Fred Dobbs and Bob Curtin, two Americans searching for work in Mexico, convince an old prospector to help them mine for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
Here's a list of some pre 60's films that I've enjoyed:
Night of The Hunter (1955)
The Sea Wolf (1941)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
The Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Harvey (1950)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Suddenly (1954)
If you're into international cinema, there was a lot of interesting stuff going on in the 50's. Akira Kurosawa in Japan made some great movies
Just random ones that come to mind, I cant think for shit right now though lol
Vertigo
North by Northwest
Requiem for a Heavyweight
Somebody Up There Likes Me
Dr. Strangelove
Charly (1968)
Brian's Song (1971)
The Naked Prey (I think this is the one. Just remember an old movie about a dude being chased in Africa)
I've really been wanting to check out the Hitchcock films. I dl'd Vertigo but haven't watched it yet. I also downloaded Citizen Kane but haven't watched it yet either. I can't stand James Stewart but I've heard nothing but good things about Vertigo and Rear Window.
I mean, any movie being considered "THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER" by countless movie critics is setting some ridiculously high expectations. That's why I was disappointed by The Godfather I think. Probably doesn't help that I was expecting it to be like Goodfellas
12 Angry Men is one of those rare cases when pretty much the entire plot is set inside one room, and yet it's interesting and never overstays its welcome.
Singin' in the Rain might not be for everyone, but it's definitely one of if not the most celebrated musicals.
I think what makes Citizen Kane so popular is what it did for the time. It's like having a modern audience watch Rashomon and them not thinking it's a big deal because we see lots of movies that use objective vs subjective camera styles and that mess with narrative truth. But when it came out, it was groundbreaking.
I think Citizen Kane is considered the greatest movie of all time because the way it was made. On a technical level its a brilliant film with what it does with its editing and framing but the story is kinda whatever.
