The justification was that Iraq either had or was seeking WMDs. The latter is hard to disprove. Funny though, Bush got congressional approval before going to war, twice. Obama didn't get congressional approval for Libya and hasn't sought approval for Syria. He also doesn't have UN approval which is something he once said was required.

One of two things will happen after this warning even if we go full force at Syria (not that we should), nothing (likely) or the great/super powers of the world blow the whole planet up with nuclear weapons (less likely). They did have chemical weapons that the US sold to them prior to the war they had with Iran. They used them in Halabja.

Obama won't get UN approval, the Russians and China will VETO.
