That's exactly the situation I was describing - two people who know English but their native language is different.

I have been in that situation many times - I don't feel comfortable speaking English to others who native language is the same as mine

I understand the native language thing. My thing is if your in the presence of someone who you "know" doesnt speak that language then why not speak English? You ever think of how that other person may feel?

edit: and again I am only speaking of the workplace.

I do speak English if I am having a conversation with other people in the room. If I am having a conversation with only the native speakers of my language, not only do I not see the necessity of speaking English (if it's none of your business what we're talking about, there is no need for you to hear it, and, yes, I understand you might be thinking we're talking bad about you or poking fun with you) but I feel quite uncomfortable doing that. Part of it is that I do feel quite strongly for my native language, part of it is that not everything can be translated - most of the best jokes, for example, are completely untranslatable

I look those fuckers dead in the eyes, point, and say HERE IN AMERICA WE SPEAK AMERICAN, PAL!
I feel the same way. You should come out to the 831 bro. It straight feels like Mex sometimes, like WTF!! I went to my orientation for work the other day and the whole thing is in Spanish. Whatever happened to speaking English around here. Last time I checked this was still Calif.

Like a wise one once said I can't understand you! Get out of my country
Are you sure you want to tell that to Filipinos given what the USA has done to their country?

Or to Mexicans given the history of how half of Mexico became an american territory?

So...if I'm with a buddy of mine in my home and my sister in law is there (who doesn't speak any English) I have to speak Chinese? Seriously?

A lot of Chinese do not speak English. I would have to speak Chinese all the time. Fuck that.

At work I'm always with some people who don't know English...

And you don't think this is a different circumstance? Think of it in terms of if you were at work and started speaking English with the one other American in the whole building as soon as Mr. Lee came in the room. Do you see how he would take that?

I dunno...I grew up with people from other countries. Heaps of people around me spoke Polish, some African shit, Turkish, etc....

Then again, nobody really started talking in a different language because I entered the room. That's a bit weird.
