Floyd Mayweather Jr. to announce his next opponent on Super Bowl Sunday
January 31st, 2013 | Post Comment

floyd mayweather jr By Omar Torres: Rumors have been swirling around that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0) will finally announce his next opponent during this Sunday’s big game super Bowl XLVII, according to frontrowking.com. His next fight is set to be on May 4th in the MGM Grand area in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Once again Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is trying to grab the spotlight, and also trying to take away some steam of the Super Bowl, which is impossible unless he announces his fighting Manny Pacquiao which is highly unlikely. We will finally find out who will take a crack at taking Floyd Mayweather undefeated record away.

The names that have been thrown around have been Robert Guerrero (31-1-1), Saul Alvarez (41-0-1) and Timothy Bradley (29-0). I think Floyd Mayweather wants to fight a Mexican on that date because its close to Cinco de Mayo which is a Mexican holiday so I think Bradley is out the picture, And I also think Saul isn’t going to get the shot at least for now. In my opinion it’s going to be Robert Guerrero to get his shot in May.

Robert has been the ahead of the pack for a while now and I don’t see why he wouldn’t be getting a shot at Floyd. Then again you just never know with Mayweather, I mean, the Saul Alvarez fight is where the big money is at and Saul is more popular among Mexicans in Mexico and the U.S. This Sunday, if the Rumors are true we will finally get to see who will face Money Mayweather on May 4th.

It’s funny to me that Floyd Has possibly chosen the day of the biggest sporting event of the year in the U.S to make his announcement, because the casual fans might not care on that day, but hey, that’s Floyd for you he has done this in the past in 2010 and last year.

Sturm: Gennady Golovkin hasn’t proven himself
January 30th, 2013 | Post Comment

gennady golovkin felix sturm By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16 KO’s) thinks WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) is still a fighter that hasn’t really shown whether he’s as good as what some boxing fans think he is. Sturm isn’t sure himself and he thinks he’s got a lot to prove before he’ll consider him a good fighter.

Sturm said to RingTV “He [Golovkin] hasn’t proved himself and backed up his talk and especially his management talk…there was never a real offer from his side for a fight against me, it’s just talk. He has to prove himself and get known before a fight would make sense, both financially and from a boxing perspective.”

This is an interesting outlook for Sturm because a lot of boxing fans think he went out of his way to dodge a fight with Golovkin. If Sturm’s main problem with Golovkin is that he’s not proven, then why didn’t he fight him so he could prove himself? I don’t know that I buy Sturm’s reasons for not fighting Golovkin.

If Sturm was willing to fight Matthew Macklin, Ronald Hearns, Giovanni Lorenzo, and Martin Murray and not Golovkin, then his excuse about the fight with Golovkin not making financial sense don’t make sense. Murray, Macklin, Hearns, and Lorenzo weren’t big money fights for Sturm either. They were lesser threats than Golovkin, and yet Sturm still looked poor in several of those fights.

Sturm is still talking like he’s one of the major players at middleweight instead of a fighter on the downside that finally was exposed after having won a number of highly questionable decisions and received questionable draws in Germany.

Sturm faces Sam Soliman (42-11, 17 KO’s) this Friday night in an IBF middleweight title eliminator bout with the winner of the fight becoming the mandatory challenger for IBF champ Daniel Geale. If Sturm faces Geale in a rematch, the fight will likely take place in Germany, and it’s possible Sturm could get another gift decision.

If Sturm beats Soliman and Geale, it’s highly unlikely Sturm will face Golovkin. He kind of already gave his excuse for not fighting him by saying it doesn’t make financial sense. If doesn’t financial sense now with Sturm pretty much near the end of his career in terms of being a top fighter, then it probably never will make sense.

Omar Henry's wish of living long enough to see his 26th
birthday sadly goes unfulfilled. The unbeaten prospect was
pronounced dead Friday morning, succumbing to a battle with
gall bladder cancer.

Henry (12-0-1, 9KO) was 25 years old at the time of his
passing - just six days shy of his birthday - after being
hospitalized for nearly three months at the University of
Chicago.

So this is the BIG fight? This would be a great Friday Night Fights main event. Should be an undercard on HBO.

Tim Bradley-Provodnikov Close for 3/16

Welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley is close to finalizing a
March 16th bout with Ruslan Provodnikov, sources have
advised BoxingScene.com. A venue has not been
determined, although Southern California is in play in
terms of a locale. HBO will televise.

Bradley (29-0, 12 KOs), a former junior welterweight
champion from Palm Springs, Calif., is coming off a
controversial split decision victory over Manny Pacquiao
where he suffered ligament damage in both feet.
Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KOs), a native of Beryozovo, Russia,
served as Pacquiao’s sparring partner for the Bradley
clash and is on a five-bout winning streak.

If Bradley was fighting someone off the street I think it should be on HBO. Glad he's back in the ring and using vada testing like a true champ would. Someone had to step up cause none of the so called top fighters wanted any parts of the storm. Looking forward to this match

He turned down several fighters bro. Robert Guerrero was trying hard to fight Bradley. Bradley said it would be a step back fighting Guerrero! So Guerrero fought Berto and the rest is history. Even back then the plan for Bradley was Ruslan.

Also HBO doesn't even want this fight but they are obligated to show Bradley's next fight due to contract with Top Rank.

You know the Guerrero fight wouldn't go down due to Bradley being with top rank and he golden boy so stop it. And that fight would be a step down after his huge win over manny pacquao just keeping it real. And HBO would love to show a Bradley fight after that manny win cause it makes for good tv/ratings good or bad

He is. But I'd KILL to have his job! Just write and talk about boxing all day? That's like half my day as it is lol
I've always said that too. I used to keep in touch with Kieran Mulvaney and loved his job. I think i'd like to be in that role more actually because he writes at his leisure and has time for other stuff. Dan's job is spent watching a lot of crappy fights and having to research a lot more stuff for the sake of putting out articles. I remember a lot of little details about fighters and fights, but writing and article and making sure it's completely accurate gets old quick, at least to me.

Dirrell no longer trained by Mayweather Sr
February 2nd, 2013 | Post Comment

Michael Gbenga Floyd Mayweather Sr Dirrell Gbenga Dirrell vs. Gbenga boxing By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s), who should be unbeaten still given his controversial loss to Carl Froch, is no longer training with Floyd Mayweather Sr. It seems they’ve decided to go in different directions for some unknown reason.

According to Hustleboss.com, Mayweather Sr. was late for some Dirrell’s workouts, but that still might not be the reason for the two going their separate way. Mayweather Sr. was reportedly not sure why Dirrell’s fights weren’t happening.

There were a couple of fight cards in particular that Dirrell was rumored to be fighting on, but it failed to happen.

Dirrell is still with his grandfather Leon Lawson Sr. in addition to Rodney Crisler.
Here’s my take all of this. Dirrell is a professional, and he’s one of those guys that wants to take on the best. He’s obviously been dealing problems getting the important fights that he wants, and he’s not going to take something if it’s not up to his standards or if he’s not ready.

Dirrell will be back in the ring tonight against Michael Gbenga (14-6, 14 KO’s) in an 8 round bout at the Convention Center, McAllen, Texas, USA. If Dirrell shines in this fight like many people think he will, he then wants to get back in the ring in March and look for another fight to sharpen him up to get ready for a possible IBF super middleweight eliminator bout this year.

Dirrell is targeting IBF champ Carl Froch to go after his title. That’s the smart move because Froch doesn’t much speed, and Dirrell already showed in their fight in 2009 that Froch couldn’t lay a glove on him when the two fighters were on the outside. The only way Froch was landing was when the two would come in a clinch.

Froch would then hit him while they were holding onto each other. Dirrell will make adjustments in a rematch, if Froch doesn’t get whipped by Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute or Andre Ward before then, and make sure he avoids getting near him. The best way Dirrell can do that is not to let Froch clinch because that’s when he’ll look to brain Dirrell.

You can look for an impressive performance from Dirrell tonight. He should be able to get Gbenga out of there fairly early if he sits down on his punches the way he did in his last performance against Darryl Cunningham in December 2011. Dirrell looks like he’s punching harder now, but with the same blazing hand speed.
