Man, Showtime is dope for pulling this off.

Like most of you, I'll be going for Andre Ward out of Oakland. However, looks like he'll be faced with the toughest opponent right of the bat in Mikkel Kessler. This is NOT an elimination style tournament, so you may be able to afford to lose. Here are the contestants. Next post I will explain when/where the fights are.

Arthur Abraham 30-0 (KO 24), current IBF Middleweight champion. Armenian fighting out of Germany.

Jermain Taylor 28-3 (17 KO's), former Middleweight Champion. Little Rock, AR

Carl Froch 24-0 (20 KO's), current WBC SuperMiddleweight Champ. United Kingdom

Mikkel Kessler 41-1 (31 KO's)
, current WBA SuperMiddleweight Champ. Denmark

Andre Ward 19-0 (12 KO's), 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist. Oakland

Andre Dirrell 18-0 (13 KO's), 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist. Flint, Michigan.

2-0 you really think Ward can beat all these dudes? Ward is still unproven in my eyes. Im going with Kessler cuz of experience

maybe, chances are he probably wont but he does have the tools to win, imo. Froch & Abraham are fairly simple fighters if you can survive their punch. Jermain Taylor's biggest weakness is white people apparently, so this tournament is all bad for him. Kessler is overrated, but he's got skills. I think thats what it will come down to - kessler & Ward. Again, if ward can survive I think he can out box kessler.

Wishful thinking, probably. But I've never been too impressed with Kessler.

The interesting thing is this is not an elimination style tournament and if all fighters have to face each other at least once, I see them ALL losing at least one fight. I don't know the full details on how it's going to work, but apparently it's going to be done on some sort of point system. So even if say, Ward loses to Kessler, in theory he could still win if he beats everyone else and Kessler loses to two people or scores less points (again I don't know how that point system will work).

Every fighter involved gets serious respect from me though because like I said, it's highly unlikely anyone will go undefeated. There are four undefeated fighters, two of them untested, Kessler only lost once, Abraham will be making his debut at 168 and for Taylor this is it. They are all risking A LOT by entering this tournament, so mucho props.

Yeah its pretty unheard of for something like this to happen. Some of these fights must be on the same card

The first round consists of:

Andre Dirrell vs Carl Froch
Mikkel Kessler vs Andre Ward
Arthur Abraham vs Jermain Taylor - (this will be in Germany!)

Andre Ward and Taylor have it tough. Ward has to take on the toughest of the bunch in kessler and Taylor has to fight in GERMANY, lol. he may need a KO to win that one.

Andre Ward Recovers, Joins The Super Six Tour

Berlin, Germany
- Andre Ward arrived in Berlin, Germany Tuesday to participate in the announcement of the SHOWTIME Sports Super Six World Boxing Classic. While on vacation, Ward became ill and was unable to attend the initial New York and Copenhagen press conferences.

Said Ward, "I am disappointed that I was unable to make the first portions of the announcement tour but as soon as I was physically able, I flew out to join my fellow competitors. I am not 100 percent recovered from the flu but I feel it's important to be here and I am excited about the tournament."

Ward (19-0, 12 KOs), who is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and Antonio Leonard Productions, is one of the super six fighters in the World Boxing Classic Super Middleweight Tournament. The others are Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler and Jermain Taylor.

I don't think Taylor will win by anything and he stands a good chance of getting KO'd himself. Abraham is usually a slow starter and comes on strong at the end and Taylor is the complete opposite. The main difference is I think Abraham can knock him out and I don't have faith in Taylor being able to return the favor.

It's very interesting to say the least and it's going to be a long ride. The point system that they have going is a little entertaining as well, but sort of strange.

Wonder what Pavlik is going to do in the meantime...

I'm going mainstream and picking Kessler vs Abraham in the finals.

My head tells me that Abraham should win this, but I think that Ward definitely has the skill set to outbox most of these guys.

Should be interesting though, I love this idea.

@Thir$ty B,

I don't know man, he'll be at 168 for the first time against some solid opponents. He kinda has that Winky style of defense where he just sits there in a shell, then periodically throws the big punch. Against boxers like Ward he might have trouble landing. Against a guy like Kessler who has a proven chin he might not hurt him. Froch has a pretty solid chin too but he's been dropped a few times, taylor can get KO'd and Dirrell is pretty damn untested.

That was kind of a joke. But, I give Taylor and Froch virtually no chance. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I've seen Dirrell fight, so I can't pick him. I like Ward. Very impressed with the Miranda fight. It would between him, Kessler and Abraham. Kessler has been so inactive, you have to think he's going to be rusty, especially coming to america for the first time against top level guys. Ward vs Abraham would be really interesting, but I have to pick Abraham because of experience.

My guess is he fights Sturm in a fight that nobody cares about, wins, then moves up to fight Green or Bute, gets beat and then hangs on for a few years in relatively big fights but never a champion. I'm really disappointed with how his career has gone since the 2nd taylor fight. I hope the rumors about alcohol abuse and all that isn't true.

Super middleweight tourney unveiledComment Email Print Share Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Ken Hershman knows his plan is ambitious, a six-man super middleweight round-robin tournament designed to crown a single champion. He also understands that if he pulls it off, it could go a long way toward reviving the sport of boxing.

The tournament, featuring two current champions, two former middleweight champions and two up-and-coming U.S. Olympians, was announced Monday at Madison Square Garden. It will begin this fall and conclude with a seeded semifinals and championship in early 2011.

"The beauty of this is that at the end, there'll be one winner," said Hershman, the senior vice president in charge of boxing at Showtime. "He'll be the best in his weight division."

Hershman began putting the concept together in May, first pitching the idea directly to the fighters: WBC champion Carl Froch, WBA titleholder Mikkel Kessler, former middleweight champs Arthur Abraham and Jermain Taylor, and former Olympians Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell.

Then Hershman went to their five promoters and, in a sport where it's difficult enough to get two sides to agree on a fight, managed to get all five to sign a contract.

"It was an interesting process and not one I relish repeating," Hershman said. "But they all believe firmly they can win the tournament and ... that eliminated all the nonsense."

Eliminating the nonsense is precisely what boxing fans want.

The primary complaint for years has been that there are too many champions in too many weight divisions, and that the best don't want to fight each other. Greed has often taken precedence over interesting and exciting fights, alienating those fans that are left.

As mixed martial arts booms in popularity, boxing languishes behind.

"Boxing is still successful," promoter Dan Goossen said, refusing to believe the sport is in jeopardy. "But what we haven't done is grow the business."

Fellow promoter Lou DiBella believes the "World Boxing Classic" will help.

"This is what's going to get us back together, what's going to get us back on the map," he said. "There's not going to be a bad fight in this tournament. The best are fighting the best."

Unlike a traditional single elimination tournament, each fighter will be guaranteed three bouts and earn points based on their decisions. A victory will be worth two, including a bonus point for a knockout, and a draw will earn one point. The four boxers with the most points will advance to the semifinals.
While dates and locations have not been confirmed, the first group of bouts is set. Dirrell will fight Froch for his WBC title, while Kessler defends his WBA title against Ward and Taylor fights Abraham.

"It happened so fast," Taylor said. "I was wondering what I was going to do next, and I got a phone call saying this tournament was coming. I couldn't wait to sign."

Some talented fighters didn't get that chance.

Among those who aren't involved are IBF champ Lucian Bute, who is scheduled to fight Librado Andrade this fall, WBO champion Karoly Balzsay and top contender Allan Green.

Hershman would not reveal what contingencies are in place should a fighter get hurt, fail a drug test or drop out for some other reason, but he acknowledged that Bute or another top super middleweight could conceivably end up in the tournament.

"If you have eight, at some point it becomes so unwieldy and long, and you run the risk of collapsing on top of itself," Hershman said. "We expected we would go to six and one would say no, but everybody said yes, and we were done."

The fighters give the tournament a global flair, while their resumes give it credibility.

Kessler (41-1, 38 KOs) might be considered the favorite. The hard-hitting Dane's only loss came in 2007, when he waged a slugfest with unbeaten champion Joe Calzaghe.

Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) made headlines earlier this year when he rallied to knock out Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) with 14 seconds left to defend his title. Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) was born in Armenia and now fights out of Germany, and will be moving up from middleweight after vacating his 160-pound title over the weekend.

While the tournament isn't designed to pit Europe versus America, that's how many fans will view it. Taylor was a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs) won the bronze medal in 2004, and Ward (19-0, 12 KOs) won gold for the U.S. in Athens.

"It has nothing to do with Europe and America," Froch insisted. "It's the best fighters in the world. It just happens to be where we come from."

I'M GONNA SAY WARD VS. ABRAHAM IN THE END.

EVEN IF WARD LOOSES TO KESSLER, IT WON'T BE BY KO SO IM PRETTY SURE HE WON'T GET ELIMINATED...

I THINK WARD IS GONNA EITHER SWEEP UNTIL HE GETS TO THE FINALS OR LOOSE HIS FIRST FIGHT AND FEEL THAT HE HAS TO PROVE HIMSELF AND GET TO THE FINALS. IF HE TRAINS PROPERLY HE COULD DO IT.

Its all a matter of opinion but froch no chance? This dude is tuff as nails man.....Like2-0 said his style is simple....but he's a throwback fighter.....Froch is my pick.....Jermain Taylor is one of my fav boxers....He's getting lucky with all these opportunites to be back at the top......If he can just fight consistintly through the whole fight :)ermm:) he would be almost unstoppable.....He punished froch in the begining of the fight but couldnt keep it up.......None of these fighters can fuck with a complete Jermaine Taylor.....If he's on his game from start to finish he is the man to beat (but most likely from what he has shown this wont be the case).......And why you got the picture of jermaine on the floor?
