Today I was reading the San Jose Merc at work and there was an article by Tim Kawakami on JaMarcus Russell and the raiders.. He made it seem like the raiders and Russell are nowhere near a deal and neither side is budging. What's up with that?

I know I've been saying all along that he WILL sign because he was the number 1 pick and it would be foolish to take someone first overall and not pay the price, but it's starting to get ridiculous. He's already missed 2 preseason games and 20+ practices.

I know it's just journalist babble, but Kawakami normally doesn't write articles that don't make sense. He even mentioned the possibility of a trade (unlikely).

Are any of you worried?

If the raiders don't pay him it would be the biggest waste of a pick in the history of the NFL.

I guess they are trying to put stipulations in his contract though.. Like if he turns out to be a bust they won't have to pay him all that money. So if they did offer him what he wants, that might be the reason he still hasn't signed. It's a smart move, but at the same time it's a dumb move. It's smart on the raiders behalf because they wouldn't be dumping all that money into him if he turns out to be a bust, but dumb because they obviously chose him thinking he wouldn't be a bust and he was worth that #1 pick.

It really pisses me off when these young players who haven't even played a single NFL play demand such high contracts. You got to prove your worthy. The NFL should have mandatory 1-year Rookie contracts with a maximum amount they can get paid for that year. Doesn't the NBA have something like that??

I think it's the Raiders management personally. Every other first round draft pick has signed. They need to sign Russell and get him into camp. Culpepper is looking good though. Walter looks better now that he has time. But they gotta get Russell signed.

Cut and pasted from the article Fatal mentioned:

If the reports are correct, the Russell camp is asking for something in step with No. 1 pick tradition: about $30 million in guarantees, a 15-to-20 percent bump from Mario Williams' deal with Houston last year.

It's the Raiders who are seeking the change-up. They want the right to take back portions of the money if Russell is suspended or is a flop.

That might be wise in the post-Michael Vick era, especially for a team that took Robert Gallery No. 2 overall just a few years ago and sank a large investment into Randy Moss for two pitiful seasons.

But it's not going to happen with Russell. No. 1 picks always receive full guarantees; if you draft somebody that high, you have to believe he'll justify your selection or you shouldn't bother taking him.

I am sorry but there is no way he deserves a contract that rivals LJ's in terms og gaurnteed money...yet he wants more than LJ....

let him rot while losing his only skill. The only reason he wants such a huge amount gaurnteed his becaiuse he knows he will bust.....what did he do in college?? not much, in fact he was almost beat out of his job.....but he'sgot raw skills.....lol

so did Vick and he never turned into the QB everyone thought he would be.

He'll sign eventually there have been other 1st round pick hold outs in the past that have gone this long. Russell is not stupid enough to hold out the whole year and then enter next years draft because it'll make him look like a player who is only concerned with money and a lot of teams will look down on him, and also he will not go as high in the draft.

It would have been nice for Russell to have participated in the training camp practices and actually start learning, but realistically even if he had already signed I doubt he would even play his rookie season.

I think you're missing the point. Every year the first person picked gets more than the previous years first pick. Mario Williams got more than Alex Smith. The price of signing a first pick goes up every year. The Raiders knew that when they drafted him. I think they agree on the money but the Raiders want some insurance just incase things don't work out. But they shouldn't have drafted him if they were worried about that.

and I am sorry but JR (or any college player for that matter) does not deserve more gaurnteed $$ than LJ or any other player who has proved them selves

Yeah but guarentees are typical in first round draft pick contracts. Alex Smith got like 24 million guaranteed before he hit the field. Mario Williams got like 26 million right? Calvin Johnson just signed his contract and got 27 million guaranteed.

but see the funny thing is...they were college players that actually did something. JR isn't/wasn't on thier level competivly in college....like I said earlier he was almost beat out of his position.

And I still dont think they are worth that much either.

I'm glad my team is usually always competitve and we don't have to wrry about those type of drsft picks.
