yeah i heard about the update issues but theres WINDIZUPDATE plugin for firefox and it also works with all other browsers.. opera, netscape, etc.
OR theres this method....
1. open internet explorer,
2. go to tools
3. go to internet options, then click the button that says LAN Settings
go to proxy server and type in 0.0.0.0
then hit okay.
When youre done this just means that IE wont be able to make an HTML connection.. doesnt affect the functions of Windows or Updates.

you can turn it off for good, but you cant delete it. And if for some reason you need to undo it, its easily reversible.

Also if you use other browsers other than firefox, go to their options and disable what you did so its only active on internet explorer. Because when you do it to internet explorer its global settings so it takes place for any browser unless you go to the browser you wanna use and uncheck/undo it there.

1. Download & Install Avast! Home Edition, it's free & the best out there. Say yes to the startup scan and let it do the startup scan. When you restart windows, do the 'Thorough Scan'. Avast! Monitors all your internet browsing, so it stops viruses before they come in, and at the same time its looking for malware by scanning your computer in the background.

You have to register it after 45 days, meaning give your email, etc.
2. Download Windows Defender. Another free application, mainly for your spyware. I believe you need the service pack 2 to download it.
