PS3 bested by older brother
by Mike Smith

Buzz up!

May 18 2:42 P.M.

According to official April figures released by the NPD Group, the Playstation 3 found itself beaten out for fifth place by an unusual competitor: its predecessor, the Playstation 2.

Still the boss
A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system's price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.

The PS2's success was probably the only nugget of April sales news to put smiles on the faces of Sony execs. Nintendo platforms continued their lockdown of the top spots, with the Wii coming second and the DS coming both first and third, courtesy of the just-launched DSi: the DS's two hardware variations accounted for an astonishing million sales during April.Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 was down slightly over last April, but still managed a solid fourth place and remains on course for a record-breaking year.

But both the Playstation 3 and PSP posted disappointing results, with the PS3 placing sixth with its worst performance in over 18 months, and the PSP limping in seventh with a total of 116,000 sales -- down over 30% on March's numbers.

The news has revitalized persistent rumors of price cuts for Sony's PS3. The system's base model is between $150 and $200 more expensive than its competitors, the Wii and Xbox 360. Industry news site Gamasutra predicts we'll see a $100 cut in the $400 Playstation 3 announced at the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles in early June.

So if you're contemplating taking the Playstation plunge -- and with top exclusive superhero thriller Infamous just a week away, we're betting some of you are -- you might well want to hold off and wait to see what June has in store.

It's a huge loss if you think about how much money was spent on R&D for an "epic" system that was supposed to revolutionize the gaming industry. When a company is relying on an older system to keep its gaming name alive, the gaming division of sony isn't doing well.

I think it shows how expensive the PS3 is. If they were both the same price..........................
exactly.

and these companies make most of their money through game deals and not through the hardware.

if it goes down in price expect them to sell a lot more.

either way i own a ps3 and love it. great sports games ( which is mostly what i play), i can play my friends online for free, and i dont worry about it breaking on me.

can a ps3 go online with its games like a xbox?

cuz i think this is where the xbox has an advantage with so many people online all throughout the day.

I love my PS3 and use it daily for many things BESIDES gaming. Its like a computer system hooked up to my TV. I watch movies on it, stream movies, and even play music at times. My 360 pretty much collects dust.

the 360 does all that as well. Netflix, streams downloaded movies from your comp (been using the shit out of that lately), music, pics, etc etc. In terms of multimedia, both pretty much do the same (XBOX -1 for not being blu-ray), but for online gaming, XBOX 360 is still the gold standard.....by far.

the main thing that seems stupid to me is how you have to charge the controllers on the 360. if you have 4 controllers and 4 people play regularly its a lot of work to keep 4 sets of batteries charged and ready to go. with the ps3 if a controller is getting low you can just plug it in to the ps3 with a usb cable and it charges it up. to do that with an xbox you gotta buy the kit. you buy that and then buy the blu ray player add on, and then basically you have paid for all that extra shit just to make it almost as good as a ps3.

ummm, they got play n charge kit's for like 11.99 that comes with a rechargeable battery. most new controllers you can buy with the controller, the play n charge kit. and it comes with a rechargeable battery.

you can also buy the quick charge kit that recharges 2 batteries at one time and faster then the play n charge kit.

i got a xbox 360 and i have no reason to buy a ps3 (yet) until they put some games out that i cant get on the 360 that are great games ill wait. uncharted, killzone 2, infamous, etc arent a system seller to me.

yeah. thats what i said. you can buy the kit. but i still think its fucking stupid. fuck microsoft and their poor design. like i said, you can buy the charging kits, and then the BD player add-on, and then it is almost as good as a ps3

The Blu-Ray was the selling point for me....i am collecting a fair amount of blu-ray movies, so i stuck with the PS3.

Plus, my PS3 has more USB ports that are much more accessible than the 360. My PS3 is also QUIETER than the 360 (sometimes i think its gonna take off into space!). Not to mention, upgrading HDD sizes on the PS3 is the shit; 360, not so much. I turned my 60 GB into a 160 GB in about 10 mins flat and it cost me under $40.

imo if the consoles (ps3 & 360) were the same price then it would be a different story. The pricing is the reason for the rankings. if the ps3 was as cheap as an xbox I would've gotten that instead simply because I was so used to the ps2 and I think alot of people are like that. I've also heard of alot of people buying wii's and they just sit there, but I think it's more of personal preference once you own more than one console, one is bound to get more play than the other.
