I missed it what happened? Garcia got a gift?
Yeah definitely a gift. One judge had it a draw, the other two scored it 116-112 for Garcia (meaning they had him up 8-4 which just isnt possible). Showtime crew and UK Box Nation both had Herrera winning. Lots of people crying robbery.

I wasn't really paying attention the first few rounds because it wasn't an interesting fight to me, so I didn't keep a true score, but it certainty felt like Herrera was the winner after 12.

It was an ugly fight, I think Herrera is just a tricky style to beat for a lot of guys and he has an iron chin, same guy that beat Ruslan a couple years back.

I will watch it tomorrow morning or at noon. Should be a torrent of it soon.

I had it the same way. Mayfield didn't put in much effort and Dulorme became the clinch king in that last round.

What the hell was Agnew doing? I know Kovalev hits hard but you CAN'T win if you aren't letting your hands go.
It reminded me A LOT of Golovkin vs Stevens. Same high tight guard, looking for a big counter. Both Agnew and Stevens started off pretty well but once they felt the power they closed up more and more unwilling to open up fearing they'd get caught, but eventually they just get worn down anyways. I think both fights ended in the 7th round too if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I think the ggg stevens fight ended int he 7th, maybe the 8th, but their guards are similar. The thing is, why even go into that type of guard when the person is throwing those type of combos? You are basically leaving yourself open to brutal bodyshots. I told my nephew, in the 3rd round, "this is predictable he's going to really open him up with the left body blows." Sure enough that is what he did. For someone like Kovalev, who is high powered and also accurate, you better use your hands and move. I am not sayign to slug it out, but you gotta beat him to the punch and circle. The guy hasn't even been 10 rounds I don't think, so you gotta out work him and make him move. This idiot, Agnew, was just standing there in the guard and countering every so often. You can't win like that.

They do it because that's their style of fighting and they don't know any other way. It's a great style versus some kind of fighters. Like Sergio Martinez always struggles against a high guard like Murray and Barker. But it's a horrible style against volume punchers, like Winky vs Paul Williams or Clottey vs Pacquiao. That style requires time for openings so against a volume puncher they are like turtles just covering up and waiting because the punches never stop, then it's too late.

The bold is the problem. Forget the defensive fights like Floyd, Pernell, etc. Just look at anyone who was "great" and you will see that they could adapt and change guards. If you KNOW this guy is a high volume puncher or, at the very least, is throwing enough punches to get a KO, that is the wrong style (which you pretty much agree with.)

This Agnew guy was a sitting duck from the start. Body is open. Then when Kovalev goes to the body, the hands drop. Hands drop and now upstairs is a target.

Adapt or die.
