Lomachenko to get another shot at WBO featherweight title in the Summer, says Arum
March 3rd, 2014 | Post Comment - 46 Comments
88Share 2 617Share 15Tweet

vasyl lomachenko By Chris Williams: Showing that it helps being connected with a high-powered promotional company like Top Rank, #5 WBO Vasyl Lomachenko (1-1, 1 KO’s) will be getting an immediate title shot at the vacant WBO featherweight title in the Summer despite the fact that Lomachenko was beaten in his fight last Saturday by Orlando Salido in an attempt to capture the same title at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. WBO president Paco Valcarcel is giving Lomachenko another chance to snatch the WBO featherweight title, but it won’t be against Salido again because he’s moving up in weight.

Lomachenko will be fighting against one of the top contenders that the WBO has ranked in their top 15. It probably won’t be against Gary Russell Jr., even though he’s ranked No.1 by the WBO. He’s with Golden Boy Promotions, so that’ll mean that he’s going to be likely skipped over for this fight. I wonder what the WBO will say in justifying that another contender get the shot at the vacant WBO title instead of Russell Jr?

HBO made a big production about Salido’s so-called low blows in the fight, but in looking at the fight on slow motion, I saw nothing but belt line shots thrown by Salido in 99% of the cases. Lomachenko was catching the shots on his belt line, and those are allowable shots. The HBO talking heads got excited for nothing about the low blows.

If it’s not Russell Jr. that Lomachenko will fight, then it’ll be one of the little known featherweight contenders like Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, Joel Brunker or Kamil Laszczyk that he ends up facing. Those guys are ranked high by the WBO, but not any of the other sanctioning bodies. If the WBO orders Lomachenko to fight one of those guys then it’ll be the equivalent of the WBO just giving Lomachenko a title.

Lomachenko clinched for the 10 of the 12 rounds of the fight, and gave away his only chance of winning the fight by failing to actually fight. It was shocking that a 1-0 fighter was given a world title shot over more deserving contenders in the first place, but now Lomachenko is being given a second crack at the title by the World Boxing Organization.

“Considering what Lomachenko had to deal with against Salido being heavier and all that, Paco [Valcarcel] said he’s offering the vacant title fight to Lomachenko first,” said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to the LA Times.

It’s pretty sad that Lomachenko is going to get another title shot after he was beaten by Salido. What happened to the days where a fighter had to work his way into title contention by beating top contenders one after another? What happened to the days where a fighter went back in line after he was beaten in a title shot? I think it looks bad that Lomachenko is being given another crack at a title when he blew his chance of winning the title against Salido by clinching for most of the fight.

It’s going to look really bad if Lomachenko is given yet another world title if he gets beaten in the Summer, although I doubt he’ll lose if Russell Jr. isn’t facing him. Russell Jr. would beat Lomachenko, as would Guillermo Rigondeaux. Lomachenko was a great amateur, but as pro he’s nothing special. He doesn’t throw enough punches, he holds too much, and he doesn’t like it to the body.

Pavlik Guilty of Disorderly Conduct in Taxi Fare Case

by David P. Greisman

Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik pleaded guilty late last week to one count of disorderly conduct in a case stemming from a September incident. Pavlik had allegedly refused to pay a taxi driver $25 home after a ride home from an Ohio bar, according to the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator.

He had been facing one count of theft of less than $1,000.

Pavlik was fined $300.

He also has a pretrial hearing scheduled for March 17 in a separate case, one in which he’s accused of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, according to online court records.

In December, police responded early one morning to a report of a potentially impaired driver on the Ohio Turnpike.

“A trooper spotted Pavlik’s car at the gate trying to exit the turnpike, but Pavlik did not have a pass or ticket on him to exit the toll road,” said the Vindicator’s newspaper report at the time, citing police. “As the trooper questioned Pavlik, he showed signs that he was impaired.”

Pavlik refused a breath test but “was still cited because the trooper had probable cause to believe Pavlik was drunk,” the newspaper reported.

The 31-year-old retired last year after a planned fight with Andre Ward was postponed due to Ward suffering an injury in training camp. His last bout was in July 2012, a decision win over Will Rosinsky. That brought his record to 40-2 with 34 knockouts.

Sergey Kovalev: Adonis Stevenson is a Piece of Sh*t

By Reynaldo Sanchez

Earlier today, WBO light heavyweight world champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (23-0-1, 21KOs) was training at the Iron Mike Productions Gym in Deerfield Beach, Florida - as he prepares for his HBO televised title defense against unbeaten contender Cedric Agnew (26-0, 13KOs).

Kovalev and his team, led by trainer John David Jackson, were putting in some tough routines. The fight with Agnew is scheduled for March 29th at The Ballroom located in the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey

“We are working hard as usual. Sergey is a very disciplined athlete and for sure he will be ready to defend his title on March 29th,” said Jackson.

Regarding a future unification with WBC champion Adonis Stevenson, Kovalev held nothing back with his feelings. The two fighters have been trading harsh words for the last few days.

“Unfortunately the only words that I can use to describe a coward like Adonis is that he is a piece of sh*t....and right now we are focused on Agnew and working hard to be ready in New Jersey to got another victory," Kovalev said.

Juan Manuel Marquez excited about possible Manny Pacquiao fight

By Lance Pugmire

Juan Manuel Marquez’s promoter in Mexico said Monday that the fighter was pleased with terms for a May 17 fight against Mike Alvarado at the Forum, and has had a change of heart and is open to a fifth fight against Manny Pacquiao.
Marquez (55-7-1, 40 knockouts) told promoter Fernando Beltran he wants to share the Alvarado offer with his wife, and trainer “Nacho” Beristain, to get their input, then will meet again with Beltran on Thursday in Mexico City.
The 40-year-old Marquez, who last fought and lost a split decision to Timothy Bradley in October in Las Vegas, previously said he wasn’t interested in a fifth fight against Pacquiao, who fights for Bradley’s World Boxing Organization welterweight belt April 12 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Yet Beltran said Marquez has reconsidered.
“He wants the challenge of the Bradley-Pacquiao winner, he wants to make history of a fifth world title in five divisions,” said Beltran, referring to a feat never accomplished by a Mexican fighter. “If Pacquiao wins he’ll have the belt, and Juan wants it.”
Bob Arum, Marquez’s promoter in the U.S., said he’s “very excited, delighted” by that decision.
First, Marquez would have to deal with the 33-year-old Alvarado (34-2, 23 knockouts), who has engaged in three consecutive wars, splitting bouts against Brandon Rios, then getting knocked out in October by Ruslan Provodnikov.
For Marquez, the bout would also mark a return to the legendary Inglewood arena where he fought 12 times in the late 1990s.
“I have so many fond memories of fights at the Forum, and now they’ve done a great job of renovating it,” Arum said. “L.A. is such a great boxing market, and now it has one more great place to watch fights again.”
Beltran said Marquez is enthused to return to the venue that formerly was the Lakers’ and Kings’ home.
“It’s sensational for him, historical and he’s very excited about returning there at this point in his career,” Beltran said.

AMIR KHAN AND ADRIEN BRONER TRADE INSULTS VIA TWITTER, BUT WILL THEY TRADE LEATHER ON MAY 3?

AMIR KHAN AND ADRIEN BRONER TRADE INSULTS VIA TWITTER, BUT WILL THEY TRADE LEATHER ON MAY 3?

Former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan and former welterweight champion Adrien Broner continue to trade insults via Twitter, fueling the demand from fans for a potential showdown between the two fighters. Undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather has expressed his desire for the two to fight on the undercard of his May 3 title unification with WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana, even going so far as to promise Khan a fight with him should he get past Broner.

Unfortunately, Showtime Sports Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza continues to downplay the likelihood of the fight taking place on May 3, telling fans via his own Twitter account that "Broner likely going to 140, Khan going to 147. Catchweight would just delay their adjustment to their desired weight classes." Despite Espinoza's claims that there are "other reasons" why the fight likely won't happen, both Broner and Khan continue to take jabs at each other as if they do indeed prefer to fight. Check out the latest volley of insults the two fighters lobbed at each other:

Angulo will need a KO to beat Canelo on Saturday, says Hunter
March 4th, 2014 | Post Comment - 47 Comments
0Share 0 0Share 0Tweet

Virgil Hunter Canelo Angulo Canelo vs. Angulo saul alvarez alfredo angulo By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Virgil Hunter believes that his fighter Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) is in a tough situation this Saturday in his fight against the highly popularly but very flawed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s). Hunter thinks it’s going to require a knockout for Angulo to get a win over Canelo, because the judges likely won’t give a decision to Angulo over a fighter that has the popularity and who brings a lot of fans to the sport.

It’s pretty clear that Angulo has to knock Canelo out to get a victory. All you need to do is look at the Canelo vs. Austin Trout fight and see how one judge had the scored 118-109 to know that Angulo won’t likely be getting a decision over Canelo on Saturday, even if he knocks him down 2-3 times. If Trout wasn’t given a decision over Canelo, then I can’t see Angulo getting a decision against him.

“He [Angulo] has to knock him [Canelo] out,” Hunter said to RingTV. “I have to think that way, knowing what Canelo brings to the table, and what he means to Golden Boy and anybody else that feels like he’s an asset to the sport of boxing. I feel like we have to knock out Canelo to win the fight. The importance of knocking Canelo out has been stressed to Alfredo.”

Trout referred to Canelo as the Golden Goose for Golden Boy going into their fight, and as it turns out the goose got the win despite Trout having outworked Canelo by a long shots.

Canelo spent much of the Trout fight with his back against the ropes resting and playing it safe. That’s why it’s probably going to take a KO for Alfredo to get the fight, because he’s not going to be able to just assume tht he’s going to be given rounds just based on him throwing and landing more big power shots. The fans will be cheering for everything that Canelo throws on Saturday night and it won’t matter that he’s missing shots or if his punches don’t have the same kind of power that Angulo’s shots. He’s going to need to really take the fight to the red-haired Canelo, and leave him stretched out on the canvas and unable to get back up.

Hunter knows what Canelo’s weakness is, and that’s his lack of stamina. Hunter is going to have Angulo pushing the fight against Canelo to make him fight hard and use up his energy in the fight. The only fighter that forced Canelo to work hard was Shane Mosley, but he didn’t have the power or the size to compete against him. However, Mosley did wear Canelo down, bloody him and have him visibly frustrated late in the fight. One can only imagine what Mosley would have done to Canelo if he had any power to speak of. He likely would have made a mess of Canelo and scored a stoppage victory at some point in the fight. If Angulo pushes the fight against Canelo the way he knows how, he could get a stoppage by wearing him out.

Adrien Broner – John Molina possible for Mayweather-Maidana card on 5/3
March 4th, 2014 | Post Comment - 86 Comments

Mayweather Maidana Mayweather vs. Maidana marcos rene maidana john molina floyd mayweather jr adrien broner By Scott Gilfoid: A fight between lightweight John Molina (27-3, 22 KO’s) and Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) is being talked about for the co-feature bout on the May 3rd Showtime pay-per-view card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Fighthype.

A Broner-Molina fight is basically a move where Broner would be moving back down to the lightweight division. The plan is for Molina to move up to light welterweight to face Broner. Molina was beaten last year by lightweight Andrey Klimov in losing a 10 round decision. In 2012, Molina was blown out in 1 round by Antonio DeMarco. If you remember, DeMarco is the same guy that Broner destroyed in 8 rounds in 2012.
So if Showtime is interested in having Broner vs. Molina as their co-feature bout on the Mayweather-Maidana fight card, they’re essentially blessing a mismatch that will take place on the card. But it’s still good for Showtime, because it’ll make Broner look a lot better than he really is. If he beats Molina with ease, the casual boxing fans will see Broner as having redeemed himself from his loss to Maidana from last December, even tough that would be the furthest thing from the truth. Molina isn’t a major player at lightweight, so Broner would be facing a fringe [read: lower ranked] lightweight contender in Molina to fight at 140. All the advantages will be going to Broner in this fight.

Mayweather can do better than this for his fight card, and I’m hoping he doesn’t let the Broner vs. Molina fight take place because it brings nothing to his fight card. You’re not going to be able to advertize Broner-Molina and expect casual boxing fans to get excited about the fight, and definitely not hardcore fans who obviously still remember how easily DeMarco blew out Molina. If they’re going to feed a sacrificial lamb to Broner for him to destroy, I’d rather it be a light welterweight contender that can actually fight and who won’t just be blown out in 1 or 2 rounds like Molina will be.

Amir Khan was someone that has been me mentioned recently as a potential opponent for Broner, but the chances of that fight went downhill with Showtime vice president in charge of sports Stephen Espinoza saying “Broner is going down to 140 and that Khan wants to fight at 147, so the weight classes don’t match. Fighting at a catch-weight doesn’t help either of them in terms of adjusting to the new weight. It’s a good fantasy boxing matchup, but it doesn’t fit with each guy’s objectives going forward.”

You can read that anyway you want to, but I see it as Espinoza saying ‘I don’t want to put a Khan-Broner fight on Showtime.’ It’s understandable why he wouldn’t. Having Broner and Khan fight each other would be a waste for Showtime, because their better off if Khan and Broner are winning instead of losing, even if it means having them fighting guys that have absolutely zero chance of beating, like John Molina does against Broner.

Chavez Jr-Vera II brings in 1.390 mil viewers on HBO

Chavez Jr. vs. Vera II Chavez Jr Vera II Brian Vera julio cesar chavez jr By Dan Ambrose: HBO must be feeling pretty pleased with their ratings last Saturday night in the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) vs. Brian Vera (23-8, 14 KO’s) rematch at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Chavez Jr-Vera hauled in 1.390 million viewers with a high of 1.531 million on HBO, and the co-feature bout between Orlando Salido and Vasyl Lomachenko brought in 1.017 million viewers.

Chavez Jr. won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 114-113, 117-110, 117-110. In terms of excitement, it was a lot more appealing than the previous fight between them that took place last year in September.

It’s nice that Chavez Jr. can bring in good ratings even when he’s not facing a popular fighter like Vera. You can just imagine the kind of ratings a fight between Chavez Jr. and Gennady Golovkin or Carl Froch might bring in later in the year. Chavez Jr. will be back in July against an opponent still to be determined. He had hoped to fight Golovkin next, but that fight can’t happen yet because Golovkin is back in his home country of Kazakhstan following the sudden death of his father. Chavez Jr. will likely face a well known but beatable super middleweight or possibly another middleweight.

If Chavez Jr. fights another middleweight than it’ll be a pretty good sign that his promoter Bob Arum is reluctant to put Chavez Jr. in with a guy with the kind of talent that can beat him. Based on how competitive his two fights were against Vera, there’s a good chance that Chavez Jr. would be beaten by a number of the top super middleweights in the division. While he could probably handle the likes of James DeGale and Sakio Bika, Chavez Jr. would likely be beaten by guys like Andre Ward, Carl Froch, George Groves and Mikkel Kessler. Those guys are to solid to be beaten by him, and they have good power of their own.

Golovkins is probably too good for Chavez Jr. as well. A fight between Chavez Jr. and Golovkin would likely be very similar to Chavez Jr’s one-sided loss to Sergio Martinez, but without Golovkin getting hurt in the 12th round the way that Martinez was. It would be pretty brutal to picture the damage that Golovkin would do to Chavez Jr’s face over the course of the fight. Golovkin’s opposition are usually faily good at getting out of the way of punches, but Chavez Jr. is one of those guys that is there to be hit. If you give Golovkin an easy target to land his big power shots then he’s going to massacre his opponents

JEFF MAYWEATHER SAYS MAIDANA WILL PROVE COMPARISONS BETWEEN FLOYD AND BRONER ARE "NOT EVEN REALLY CLOSE"
By Percy Crawford | March 05, 2014
JEFF MAYWEATHER SAYS MAIDANA WILL PROVE COMPARISONS BETWEEN FLOYD AND BRONER ARE

"This is where people are gonna see how Floyd fights as opposed to a guy imitating him. Floyd is the genuine article and he is gonna show the whole world that the comparison is basically just that; it's just a comparison. When you put the two against a common opponent and you get the chance to see the talent between the two, it's not even really close," stated world-class trainer Jeff Mayweather, who made it crystal clear that the comparisons between his nephew, undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather, and former welterweight champion Adrien Broner aren't even close. According to Mayweather, Maidana, fans, and media alike will soon find out that his nephew is on a totally different level than Broner.

"I put it this way, it's the shoulder roll, but it's not the shoulder roll perfecting. At the end of the day that's what it is. When Floyd does it, he takes it to a whole 'nother level as opposed to these guys who are imitating it or trying to duplicate it," Mayweather explained. "Like I said, Floyd is the genuine article and that's what Maidana is going to get. He's not gonna get Floyd's carbon copy or the guy that's gonna be the second coming of Floyd. He's not gonna get that; he's gonna get the real thing. And the real deal, believe me, it's not gonna be nice for him.

SHAWN PORTER VS. PAULIE MALIGNAGGI IN THE WORKS?

SHAWN PORTER VS. PAULIE MALIGNAGGI IN THE WORKS?

Sources close to the information have informed us that a potential clash between IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter and former welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is currently being discussed and could come to fruition in the very near future. In fact, we're told that the bout could end up as the co-main event of the April 19 Showtime card headlined by a title unification between IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov. If not, the fight would like land at the Barclays Center on a later date.

After a career-defining performance against former champion Devon Alexander, Porter will be looking to defend his IBF welterweight title for the first time. Likewise, Malignaggi hopes to keep his positive momentum going after coming off of a dominant victory over former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah. The winner of the potential showdown could find themselves in line to unify the title with undefeated pound-for-pound king and WBC welterweight champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather, who faces WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana on May 3.

Ward's Trainer: Golovkin-Chavez = Picking and Choosing

by Rick Reeno

Virgil Hunter, trainer of WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14KOs), is very surprised that WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26KOs) and his team are considering the possibility of moving up in weight to challenge Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at 168-pounds.

The idea of a Ward-Golovkin showdown has been discussed, numerous times, by both fighters.

Ward is ready to do the fight right now. However, during an interview last month with BoxingScene.com/Allboxing.ru, Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez made it clear that his boxer had unfinished business at middleweight and he would rather have Golovkin explore every possible option at 160 - and then consider the possibility of moving up.

"If it were my choice, I would first like to see if all of our avenues are exhausted at middleweight. [WBO champion Peter] Quillin is running. If Quillin just says that he doesn't want to fight with Gennady, then we'll forget about him. If [WBC champion Sergio] Martinez doesn't fight us, then we are left with [Felix] Sturm, who is still a champion [of the IBF]. Because not all of these possibilities have been exhausted, I do not think it is fair to ask Gennady to move up. I would like to see him unify the titles, if that's possible, and then we can move up," Sanchez said.

But, if Golovkin decides to move up in weight for a fight with Chavez Jr. in the fall, Hunter feels very strongly that Golovkin and his camp are simply "picking and choosing" their opponents.

"Before anything, my condolences go out to Golovkin and his entire family on the passing of his father," Hunter told BoxingScene.com.

"The last time a weight issue was mentioned with Golovkin, he said he intended to stay at 160 because there was unfinished business there and they had no intentions of moving up to 168. My take on it is this, if they do move up to 168 [to fight Chavez Jr.] it would give us a clear indication of what's really going - that they are in the picking and choosing business."

"That is going to classify as being in the picking and choosing business, because he said he wanted to stay down at middleweight and had no intentions of moving up to 168. It sorts of reiterates what Andre had said earlier, where it just leaves you scratching your head. We are just going to stay focused on what we do and eventually we hope to meet both of them in the ring."

LUIS COLLAZO CALLS OUT AMIR KHAN: "I WILL KNOCK KHAN OUT LIKE I DID AGAINST ORTIZ"
By Press Release | March 05, 2014
LUIS COLLAZO CALLS OUT AMIR KHAN:

WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo is coming off of his impressive Jan. 30 knockout win over Victor Ortiz at Barclays Center and has recently signed with top adviser Al Haymon.

Now Collazo has his eyes set on some of the biggest fights in the sport and has not been shy about his desire to get in the ring with the best. One such name is former world champion Amir Khan.

"I definitely proved that I should be considered part of the top tier of the welterweight division when I beat Victor Ortiz," said Collazo. "Another name that has been a part of that conversation for a long time is Amir Khan and I know that a fight against him would be huge for both of us and huge for the fans. Khan wants a shot at Floyd Mayweather and so do I. It could be a sort of welterweight playoff that would get the boxing world talking. And mark my words, I will knock Khan out like I did against Ortiz."
