Cotto-Golovkin “Miguel’s a proven champion, a proven warrior, he always rises to the big challenges.”

loeffler680Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions took some time to speak with Tha Boxing Voice regarding one of his company’s most luminous talents in Gennady Golovkin(31-0, 28KO’s), who currently holds the WBA Super, the interim WBC and the IBO middleweight championships.

Golovkin will defend those belts against Englishman Martin Murray(29-1-1, 12KO’s) on February 22nd in Monte Carlo, Monaco, but what is likely to follow? Golovkin has yet to face a marquee name on his meteoric rise to the top of his division, the absence of which somewhat undermines his legitimacy to some of the most cynical observers of the sport.

A prime candidate for that unenviable position would be WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto(39-4, 32KO’s) who is currently embroiled in the increasingly dull speculation as to who will be Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent on May 2nd, a notion given credence by Cotto’s decision to withdraw from negotiations to face Saul Alvarez on the very same night.

If Cotto decides to withdraw from that situation entirely then a match between himself and Golovkin is a natural at 160 .lb. And has been speculated over since Cotto won his title back in June. But Loeffler denies that their avoidance of one and other up to this point is anything like the saga between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s refusal to reach an agreement to fight.

“Oh, I don’t think so, that just came up [meaning the shouts for Golovkin and Cotto to face each other]. I mean Gennady just won the WBC interim title and so now he is the mandatory for Miguel Cotto. Miguel’s a proven champion in the ring he’s a proven warrior, he always rises to the big challenges.”

‘Always’ is an overstatement here as Cotto has a chequered record when he squares-off against elite opposition; his fights against Floyd and Manny were both entertaining affairs in which he ended up taking a beating, especially so in the Manny bout where he was stopped in the twelfth round wearing a shiny and swollen crimson mask.

Cotto vs GGGThat being said Cotto is still a top fighter himself and his name is one worth having on any champion’s resume, something of the like which Loeffler is trying to engineer behind the scenes as Golovkin and his team handle business inside the ring.

“You can’t overlook Martin Murray by any stretch of the imagination. Abel [Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer] and Gennady are completely focused on that, and it’s my job as the promoter to look forward and continue to plan his career. The formula has been working. I mean in the last two years since he’s been exposed here on US T.V on HBO, he’s become one of the biggest stars in boxing right now and so, even though we can argue and say he hadn’t had that ‘big name’ fight, the formula works.

His exciting style, his knockouts, and his likeable personality and character outside the ring are a great combination, and that’s what draws fans to watch him fight.”

With his public relations team so on-point, all Golovkin needs to seal his position as the premier middleweight on the planet is Miguel Cotto’s name on his ledger along with the Puerto Rican’s WBC belt around his waist. After that, only Andy Lee and Jermain Tayor [Which was Stripped ]with their respective WBO and IBF straps will stand in the way of full unification, which would elevate Golovkin to another level entirely.

Robert Garcia Wants Juan Manuel Marquez for Brandon Rios

rios-antillion-workout-pics10Brandon Rios Proved to the world that he was far from a finished fighter in his TKO victory of Mike Alvarado. In the fight, it looked like Rios was fresher and his trainer Robert Garcia feels that even if Alvarado were at his best, Rios still would have had the upper hand.

“It was a big win,” Robert Garcia told Fighthype.com “Everyone still congratulating me, everywhere I go they tell me Brandon looked great. Alvarado could have been in the best shape in his life, and the same thing would have happened.”

So what’s next for Rios? To Garcia, there are plenty of options.

“If you do well you get rewarded,” stated Garcia. “Now he’s got huge fights coming up. There are a lot of big names out there. If we go only Top Rank fighters, then you know Timothy Bradley is one that’s available. He’s a welterweight. You know he just fought Brandon just fought so 4 or 5 months, they can fight each other.”

But Since Golden Boy and Top Rank are now on business terms, Garcia says fights with guys from the other side of the old “Cold War” are available as well.

“You Know Golden Boy and Top Rank are doing business now, so you know maybe a Lucas Matthysse fight in the future,” explained Garcia. “Ruslan Provodnikov too. They’ve even mentioned Cotto depending on what Cotto does next. He’s not fighting Canelo. So if Mayweather does fight Pacquiao than that leaves Cotto with no opponent. So that’s an option.”

But Garcia preference is the future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez, not only because it would be a challenge for Rios but for himself as well.

“My preference is Juan Manuel Marquez because it would be a beautiful fight to fight a legend. It wouldn’t be easy; it would probably be very very difficult. Marquez is so talented and experience, but it would be a great challenge not only for Brandon but me. You Know going against Nacho Beristain, I don’t think I’ve ever went up against Nacho Beristain. So I wouldn’t mind doing that as a challenge

Last week on BoxingScene.com, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya explained the circumstances which led to the buyout of Leo Santa Cruz's promotional contract.

According to De La Hoya, the moment he tried to negotiate a super bantamweight unification bout between Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17KOs), who holds the WBC title, and WBA/WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs) - Santa Cruz's manager Al Haymon stepped in and exercised a clause where he was able to immediately purchase the unbeaten Mexican's contract.

"I was negotiating with Rigo's people on making Leo Santa Cruz vs. Rigondeaux - because that is the fight that the fans want to see and that's the fight that apparently, or supposedly, that Leo Santa Cruz had been asking for. We had a buyout clause in our contract with Leo Santa Cruz. And what happened? They executed the buyout and they bought us out - because they don't want that fight to happen," De La Hoya explained to BoxingScene.com.

Santa Cruz appeared on The Zone Radio and confirmed De La Hoya's version of the story, that Haymon did not view Rigondeaux as a pleasing option.

"Haymon told me that it wouldn't be an interesting fight and none of the fans would be happy to see that fight," Santa Cruz said.

As far as the future, Santa is looking at a possible fight with Abner Mares before the end of the year. He says the fight might happen on a date in September.

JMM beats Rios IMO...and Santa Cruz is smart for not getting in the ring with el Chakal, he would get the shit beat out of him.
I wouldn't call him smart for being a coward. If he loses he loses no one would look down on him for losing to the best pure boxer in the sport. He would get respect for taking on the best, like Oscar did and now Canelo. He just looks a like a bitch now. I mean they are in the same division, its not like he has to move up in weight or some shit. How can he call himself champion if he's not willing to fight for the crown? Disrespectful to the spot and the fans.

That's 90% of boxers these days. They are in it to make a living and take the least punishment possible. Calling a boxer a bitch or a coward, who steps in the ring and puts his health on the line for your fuckin entertainment, is some sad shit. I understand we have frustrations as fans because fights don't happen, but at the end of the day, these guys should be respected for the warriors that they are.

Here's the thing about that though. They're getting paid by the consumer to step into the ring and take fights. Boxing in itself has no real purpose but entertainment. It's like not we need Santa Cruz to fight for the greater good.

I don't think any of these guys are cowards but I've always hated the "this is a business" nonsense. If you're not going to take fights from other top fighters in your division, that people obviously want to see, then don't be surprised if there's backlash from the people that essentially are responsible for making your paycheck happen.

Imagine the Patriots went into the Superbowl saying they need to get paid more to play the game because the Seahawks hit too hard for that money, but they'd gladly play anyone else for the same amount of money. Then when asked about it said "people just don't understand the business side of it".

At the end of the day they're in entertainment business and absolutely no one forced for them into it.

Bullshit man. They only get paid because of the fans. It's a sport. And shit like this will only continue if the fans support bullshit ass fights and fighters. If there is no backlash, the best fights, hell just good fights will never be made. Leo Santa Cruz is getting clowned on his Twitter, IG, Facebook, boxing forums, etc and he deserves it. People are tired of him literally fighting sparring partners and dishwashers. Type of shit is that? How anyone can stick up for this kind of nonsense is beyond me. If you want the sport to get even worse, to lose even more popularity and to fade away into even more obscurity, sure go a head. Me and most boxing fans, we want what is best for the sport which is a good product. Not cherry picking fighters making a mockery of the sport.

There is no warrior in ducking, I'm sorry but he's not what Mexican boxing is about and is famous for. Its disgraceful for all those that bled in the ring before him so that he could earn $750,000 paydays. A warrior is someone who challenges himself, who gives it his all no matter the circumstances. To call Leo a warrior is joke.

I hear you guys, but how are you so sure it's Leo that doesn't want the fight? It's people around him protecting him, like most fighters are these days. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the reality. And when people come down hard on just one guy, I like to point out the bigger picture which is the state of boxing today. I'm not a huge fan of Leo by any means, and his voice is annoying as fuck, but he's not the only fighter being protected.

But to not consider any man who puts his health on the line in the ring a warrior is wrong in my opinion. Don't matter if it's a cab driver you're fighting, you still put your health on the line.

Because in another interview, he was asked on video, what would it take for him to fight Rigondeaux and dude actually said $3 million dollars. He said he wouldn't do it for a million. Said he wouldn't do it for $2 million. Only at least $3 million. Those were his words, not anybody else's. He knows damn well he's not getting $3 million fighting anyone, ever.

This is their job, this is what they've been trained to do their whole lives. Yes it takes courage to step in the ring but it also shows cowardice to back down to a challenge, especially so blatantly.

And the Patriots comparison doesn't make too much sense, since all NFL teams are under the same promoter and the business of football is much different to the business of boxing. Not to mention, boxing is one man vs one man not two teams.
There is nothing holding back Leo from fighting Rigondeaux. No network dispute, no promoter getting in the way, he simply doesn't want to fight him because he's afraid of losing.

Is it cowardice or being smart? If he looks terrible vs El Chakal like I believe he would, you say fans won't look down on him but I believe otherwise. I think it hurts his career a lot. Like I said, I see what you guys are saying. But when the p4p best fighter has been doing business the way Leo's going about it, can you blame him? The example is set on how to do business from the supposed best fighter of our time. The rest of boxing follows.

Canelo looked horrible against Floyd and it hasn't effected his career at all, he's still Mexico's biggest star and one of the top three/four American boxing stars. In fact, Canelo is being praised for taking on tough opponents. People say, yeah he lost to Floyd but Floyd is the best and Canelo is young. No one would call Leo a bum for losing to Rigondeaux. People are turning on Leo, they see what he's doing and are tired of it. The boxing community respects those that fight the best. Look at Oscar, he didn't win them all but that never mattered. He had a legendary resume.

So I disagree completely, he's not being smart. His reputation is damaged.

As for suggesting Leo is following Mayweather, disagree again. Mayweather put in work to get where he is. He fought the likes of Diego Corrales, Castillo, Hernandez, etc. Leo hasn't fought anyone.

To be honest, LSC sounds hella uneducated. So he repeats everything Haymon tells him. That's why he busts out saying Haymon doesn't feel the fans want to see the fight. Shit, he didn't even leave GBP, ODH said fuck Haymon and took more of Haymon's money and let LSC go. What's wrong with these Haymon fighters is they don't have the balls to go against him, since so many are with him. Plus they are getting paid. But now look at Mares. He signs on with Haymon and looses even more fans cuz he won't rematch Gonzalez. That's the path LSC is leading on. But here we are, wanting to watch his next match hoping he loses and Haymon gets his ratings.

LSC is the WBC champ, so we can't say he didn't work hard to get there. But what we can say is that the WBC allows him to fight unranked fighters and Haymon gets their money to pay for step aside money for other fighters and who doesn't want to get paid not to do shit? All this step aside money bullshit allows haymon to do his shady work to protect his fighetrs and increase their chances of winning their fights.

Santa Cruz: If It Was My Call, I'd Shut Rigondeaux Up!
Posted by: Miguel Rivera on 2/14/2015 .

By Miguel Rivera

As previously reported, WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz appeared on The Zone Radio and confirmed the recent statements by Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who said Santa Cruz's manager Al Haymon rejected WBA/WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux as a possible opponent.

"Haymon told me that it wouldn't be an interesting fight and none of the fans would be happy to see that fight," Santa Cruz said.

According to De La Hoya, the moment he tried to negotiate a unification bout between Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17KOs) and Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs) - Santa Cruz's manager Al Haymon stepped in and exercised a clause where he was able to immediately purchase the unbeaten Mexican's contract.

Santa Cruz would still love to get Rigondeaux in the ring. He says if it was "his decision" he would fight the Cuban champion next.

“I always want to fight against the best, and I would just love to shut this guy up," Santa Cruz angrily confirmed. “I want to fight the best fighters but at the right time. This fight will happen eventually. If it was my decision I would fight him immediately."

It would hurt his career now because everyone will be in "I told you so" mode. A lot of other factors go into it in my opinion. LSC is fighting absolute nobodies while they very clearly avoid Rigo. They say nonsense like it'll take $3M to fight Rigo etc. So I think if they were to fight him and lose now it would hurt his stock, but it wouldn't have hurt him at all to fight a guy like Rigo and lose before.

Last I checked people still want to see Donaire get in the ring and he gets paid well for it. Donaire had absolutely no reason to fight Rigo, but did anyway.
