Khan says his speed will give Mayweather problems

floyd mayweather jr amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has gone into overdrive in talking himself up for a potential fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) for next May. Khan says he’s got better hand speed than Mayweather, and he thinks that will be the reason why he’ll beat him. Khan is pretty fast you have to admit, but he fights like he has no sense whatsoever a lot of the time. Against a fighter that knows what he’s doing like Mayweather, this could be a real slaughter.

Instead of realizing that he has a fight against Devon Alexander on December 7th that he’ll likely lose, Khan is looking past that fight towards his dream bout against Mayweather. Khan wants the fight with Mayweather so badly he can taste it, but the problem is there is a formidable opponent in Devon Alexander that’s standing in his way to getting to his pot of gold fight.

Khan said to the Telegraph “I know my speed will count against him. That is something I believe 100 percent. We are the super stars of boxing, and once I have Devon Alexander out of the way, it will be Mayweather for me…you have to fight him at his own game….you have to use your speed. He needs to fight someone as quick as him, and I know that I am quicker than him.”

With the big money fight against Mayweather potentially waiting for him in May, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Khan winning a controversial decision over Alexander in December. We saw Khan get a very questionable win over Julio Diaz last April in London in a fight that Diaz appeared to win, so I could see Khan being given the benefit of the doubt against Alexander if the fight goes to the cards. As long as Khan is able to stay on his feet for most of the fight, I can see him getting a win even if he’d dominated. A Khan-Mayweather fight means a lot of money, and I think it might be tough on Alexander to get a decision with that fight waiting for Khan.

My advice for Alexander is to make sure he knocks Khan out in this fight because he doesn’t need to be on the receiving end of a terrible decision. Khan is the bigger name in this fight and when you have one fighter that is more popular than the other, that’s when you see controversial decisions. Alexander can make that doesn’t happen to him by knocking Khan out cold on December 7th.

Im sorry but Khan needs to beat someone a bit better before he gets that shot with Mayweather. If Garcia doesn't fight Mayweather then Garcia and Khan should have a rematch if anything. Khan kept saying Mayweather was scared to fight him 2 years ago and proceeds to lose 2 fights in a row

C.J. Ross to take leave of absence as boxing judge

Floyd Mayweather celebrates after defeating Canelo Alvarez in their WBC and WBA super welterweight title bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Veteran Las Vegas boxing judge C.J. Ross has taken herself off working fights for the immediate future in the wake of her controversial decision to score Saturday’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez a draw.
Ross, 64, who has been judging fights in Nevada since 1989, sent Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer an email Tuesday indicating she is placing herself on indefinite leave. The email read, in part: “I will be taking some time off from boxing but will keep in touch.”
Ross scored the fight 114-114 in a bout Mayweather appeared to have won easily. The other two judges — Craig Metcalfe of Canada and Dave Moretti of Las Vegas — had Mayweather winning 117-111, and 116-112. Ross’ score set off a firestorm of controversy throughout the boxing world, and while she defended her scoring Sunday, she decided that for the good of the sport and for the commission that she step aside.
“She feels bad the focus is on her, not Mayweather,” Kizer said. “We recognize and respect C.J.’s decision.”

Guerrero: If Mayweather fought me like he did Canelo it would have been a different fight September 17th, 2013 | Post Comment - 33 Comments 40Share 2 0 55Share 5Tweet Mayweather Canelo Mayweather vs. Canelo saul alvarez robert guerrero floyd mayweather jr By Dan Ambrose: Robert “

The Ghost” Guerrero saw last Saturday’s fight between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) and he came away surprised that Mayweather Jr. had spent so much time standing directly in front of Canelo in that fight. Guerrero thinks that Mayweather spotted a weakness in Canelo’s game that make him decide to stand and trade. Guerrero also said that if Mayweather had fought him like he did Canelo the outcome would have been different between them. Mayweather beat Guerrero by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores 117-111, 117-111 and 117-111 last May in a one-sided fight. Guerrero said to RingTV “It was very surprising to see Floyd fight in the pocket against Canelo…Canelo weighed close to super middleweight on fight night…I believe if Floyd would have fought me that way, it would have been a different fight. I think Floyd felt the sting of my punches, and after watching videos, he realized he couldn’t beat me on the inside. That’s why he moved around the round most of the fight.”

It sounds like Guerrero is delusional if he really believes that he would have stood a chance to beat Mayweather if he had stood in front of him more. Mayweather would have dominated Guerrero no matter how he fought him. I think the only reason Mayweather chose to move a lot against Guerrero is because he’d been off for an entire year since his last fight in May of 2012, and he was possibly concerned about some ring rust. Mayweather might also have been worried about getting fouled by Guerrero because we saw him doing quite a bit of that in hi way over Andre Berto in his previous fight. Guerrero held and hit Berto and dropped him that way and the referee let it go. Guerrero throws a lot of punches and some of his shots stray low when his opponents are standing in front of him. That too could have been a reason why Mayweather didn’t want to stand in front of Guerrero. Who wants to be nailed below the belt. Guerrero was wrong about Canelo almost weighing as much as a super middleweight. At 165, that is super middleweight.

The super middleweight division is 161-168. Canelo was well within the super middleweight limit. He wasn’t at the upper limit, but he was awfully close to it at 165. Mayweather did a good job of beating a guy that was 15 lbs. heavier than him and you’ve got to give Mayweather a ton of credit for having accomplished that.

Canelo won’t have to wait long for title shot; Carlos Molina already offering him
September 17th, 2013 | Post Comment - 4 Comments

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) won’t have to wait a long time like most fighters do after they get beaten in big fights. Canelo, who was beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, is already received an offer for a fight by IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KO’s) if he wants to take the fight.

Molina just won the IBF 154 lb. strap in beating Ishe Smith on the undercard of “The One” last Saturday, and he’s now looking to cash in with a big money fight against Canelo or Miguel Cotto, whichever one says yes first.

Molina said “I want Canelo Alvarez or [Miguel] Cotto next. Beating either of those guys is the fastest way to Floyd Mayweather, so that’s who I want to fight.”

Molina is a pretty good fighter and capable of beating most of the guys in the 154 lb. division, but you have to draw the line with Cotto and Canelo. Those guys would seemingly have too much firepower for a guy like Molina to beat them, but you never know. Cotto is one of those guys that is hot or cold when he fights. He either looks good or he’s struggling. Molina would seem like a fighter that Cotto should be able to beat, but not if Molina chooses to box him the way that Mayweather and Austin Trout did in beating him.

Canelo needs a title belt, and the IBF strap might be the best option for him. If Canelo is going to perch himself at 154 so that he can pick off welterweights and an occasional junior middleweight, then it makes sense for Casnelo to capture the IBF title to hold for a while until he can no longer make weight for the division or until someone beats him again.

Molina might make it a tough fight for Canelo by making him miss and paying him back. Canelo did not look good in getting tagged by Mayweather last weekend, and Molina hits almost as hard as Mayweather. Who knows? If Molina can land enough power shots he might be able to trouble Canelo and expose him again.

Molina has victories over Cory Spinks, Kermit Cintron, Ed Paredes and draws against Erislandy Lara and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The draws against those two fighters were fights that Molina deserved the wins, but he ended up having to settle for draws against these guys.

Matty Speaks The Truth

By Elisinio Castillo

Junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32KOs) says WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16KOs) did his homework. Last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Garcia won a twelve round unanimous decision over Matthysse.

Garcia was the underdog coming in, but he withstood Matthysse's punches, closed the Argentine boxer's right eye in the sixth round and scored a knockdown in the eleventh. Matthysse had no excuses and offered nothing but respect to the champion.

"I fought with only one eye for half of the contest and I still put up a great fight. He is a good champion. I thank him for giving me the opportunity. It was a good fight. He caught me with a good shot and I could not see. He studied me well before the fight," Matthysse said.

Garcia will likely move up to the welterweight division, leaving the door open for Matthysse to pursue the vacant WBC/WBA titles. Golden Boy Promotions denied reports that Garcia and Matthysse were going to face each other in a rematch.

Matthysse suffered a small fracture of his right orbital bone. He will need at least two months to heal the injury.

Guerrero is on one. He still doesn't get it. Part of being a good boxer is the ability to adjust and adapt based on the circumstances. There was no reason for Floyd to fight him the same way he fought Canelo. Two different fighters, two different styles. That's like saying Ali should have fought everyone the same or that Ray Leonard should have used the same tactics he used on Duran on Hagler or Hearns.

Ghost, you had your chance and got wiped out. YOU go fight Canelo now.

RIP KEN NORTON.

Rafael wants Mayweather to fight Danny Garcia next

Mayweather Garcia Mayweather vs. Garcia floyd mayweather jr danny garcia By Dan Ambrose: If ESPN’s Dan Rafael gets his way, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) will be facing WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia next in May rather than Adrien Broner, Amir Khan, Devon Alexander or Marcos Maidana. Rafael thinks Garcia is an exciting fighter and the most qualified to be facing Mayweather fight now due to his wins over a past his prime Erik Morales, as well as his wins over Amir Khan, and Lucas Matthysse.

Rafael said to ESPN “Garcia has shown he can rise to the occasion. Maybe, just maybe, he could do it again against Mayweather…Garcia is an exciting fighter…Garcia has earned his opportunity more than the other candidates under consideration to challenge for Mayweather’s welterweight crown.”

I disagree completely with all of that. Garcia hasn’t earned anything. He beat a shot Erik Morales, and he clinched his way to a win against Matthysse last Saturday night. Garcia should have been penalized 3 or 4 times for excessive holding by the referee working the fight if he was on his J-O-B, and the referee told screwed up by giving Garcia credit for a knockdown where he shoved Matthysse into the ropes and hit him while he stuck caught in between the ropes.

The knockdown shouldn’t have counted and Garcia should have lost points for holding all night. If Garcia wants to fight Matthysse again and prove that he can without holding, then I wouldn’t mind considering Garcia for Mayweather, but ONLY if he beats Matthysse in a fair and square manner.

A Garcia-Mayweather fight wouldn’t be entertaining Mayweather would have Garcia holding him all night long and that would be too ugly for fans. Garcia blew his chance for the Mayweather fight by electing to fight in a manner that I’ve only seen from guys like John Ruiz and Bernard Hopkins.

To me, the more exciting fight for Mayweather would be for him to fight Broner, Maidana, Matthysse or Khan. Those four guys are the better fights for Mayweather. Matthysse should be considered because he has a much more exciting style of fighting than Danny Garcia and he would make it interesting for fans. I don’t care if Broner’s not a huge star right now, he’s more of a star than Danny Garcia, so that’s enough for me to pick the more popular Broner over Danny for the Mayweathr fight. Maidana likes to slug it out, and so we wouldn’t have to worry about any ugly holding from him if he were to fight Mayweather.

Keith Thurman is better than any of those guys, but he might not be considered for the fight because he’s a big welterweight who balloons up in weight after he rehydrates for his fights. I could see Thurman fighting in the 170s against Mayweather.

David Haye suffers cut, fight with Tyson Fury postponed
September 21st, 2013 | Post Comment - 43 Comments

By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) suffered a bad cut over his left eye during a sparring session with one of his sparring partners on Friday, and due to the extent of the cut it means that Haye’s September 28th fight against Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) will have to be postponed. Right now they’re taking 2 weeks, but with a cut like that it could wind up being a lot longer than that. Haye needed 6 stitches to have the cut closed.

Why Haye was still doing sparring with a week to go before before his important fight is the big question. You’re supposed to be done with sparring by that point, and I have no clue what Haye hoped to accomplish by still sparring that close to the fight. To say it was a bone-headed move on Haye’s part is being kind at this point.

Haye was reportedly sparring with 6’6″ Filip Hrgovic when he suffered the cut, according to Sky Sports.

Haye said via Sky “Gutted isn’t even the word. Mentally, I’m on the floor at the moment. I’m devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team, as well ad Tyson Fury and his team.”

I saw this coming earlier this week when I saw some of the sparring action between Haye and his sparring partners. Haye was going to war with guys much bigger, heavier and in some cases stronger than him, and it was only a matter of tine before he suffered an injury of what kind or another. I’m just surprised that this didn’t take place much easier in his training camp because with some of the big head shots that Haye was taking in the sparring, it was bound to happen that he would suffer a cut.

There’s no telling how long it’s going to take for the cut to heal. If Haye tries to get back in the ring after only 2 weeks, I can see the cut opening up almost immediately when he gets hit by one of Fury’s shots. Haye would then be forced to fight with red blood dripping into his left eye. That would make it even more necessary for Haye to try and get a quick knockout because if he’s fighting with only partial vision, it could be tough on him to win the fight.

Klitschko is really hard to rate and honestly has made me re-evaluate how I've looked at Lennox Lewis. I thought Lewis was an all time great heavyweight. Now I'm not really so sure.

What does either klitchko have to do with Lewis? Lewis's fight with Vitali that was his last fight of his career, he was fat and scheduled to fight someone else but Vitali was a late replacement. Lewis still got the TKO victory at the end of the day as well.

Also just look at the resumes - Lewis beat Holyfield, David Tua, Mike Tyson (old), Vitali, Golota, Shannon Briggs, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Razor Ruddock.

Klitchko, you combine both brothers resumes and it's still not even close, best wins being Chris Byrd, Sam Peter, Tony Thompson, David Haye, Lamon Brewster.
