So I guess Amir Khan turned down Joan Guzman. Guzman will likely now fight undefeated Russian Khabib Allakhverdi either in Russia or Florida depending on who wins the purse bid for the Vacant WBA 140 pound title.

Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman 33-0-1 (20 KO's) was recently awarded the right to obtain the WBA super lightweight world title. Promoter Henry Rivalta had begun negotiations with Vlad Hyrunov, the manager representative of the undefeated Russian Khabib Allakhverdiev 17-0-0 (8 KO's), to face each other for the vacant WBA world title that Argentinian Marcos René Maidana vacated. As indicated by Guzman's camp, conversations are very positive to stage the fight before the end of 2012.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR: "WARD IS GONNA BEAT HIM...I DON'T THINK DAWSON GOT ENOUGH FIREPOWER"
By Percy Crawford | September 07, 2012

"I like Ward in the fight on Saturday night. Ward is gonna beat him. Ward got his number I think. I don't see Dawson being able to beat him. I don't see Dawson being able to whoop Ward," stated world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who shared his thoughts on Saturday's highly-anticipated showdown between super middleweight king Andre Ward and WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. Having worked with him in the past, Mayweather Sr. knows a thing or two about what Dawson brings to the table. In fact, it was Mayweather Sr. who helped Dawson capture his first world title, defeating then WBC light heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek via unanimous decision in February of 2007.

"I don't think Dawson got enough firepower to beat him. And plus, Ward can fight both ways. He can box on the outside and fight on the inside. Chad can only really do one and that's box on the outside and he's not really busy enough when he's doing that," Mayweather Sr. explained. "When he get his ass whooped this time, he will be done on the big stage. I don't know why he didn't try to get the fight at 175. I think he could have gotten Ward to come up there."

SERGIO MARTINEZ: "HIS MOUTH IS SO BIG...BIGGER THAN HIS OWN BRAIN AND HE'S TALKING TOO MUCH"
By Press Release | September 06, 2012

"Regardless of the preparation of his entire career, it would not make a difference; I will knock him out anyway. I believe that I am No. 2 in this sport, so that is good enough to know that I will beat him. He cannot beat me...I cannot accept the fact he is world champion. The only reason he is world champion is because he is Julio César Chávez Jr., the son of the legend and his mouth is so big – even bigger than his own brain and he's talking too much," stated middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who held a conference call to discuss his highly-anticipated showdown with WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Check out what else he had to say!

LOU DiBELLA: Thanks for joining us and it's wonderful to work on this great event with Top Rank. The ticket sales and Thomas & Mack have been incredible and it's going to be a clean sellout. I would urge everyone to get their tickets now. There are tickets left, particularly the least expensive [$75 and $50]. I do not expect there to be any tickets left on fight week so I urge people to get out and get their tickets now. I want to thank our sponsors for this event – Tecate, AT & T and Wynn Las Vegas. They have been wonderful. When you have a product to sell, it sells. We have the two best middleweights in the world getting it on -- Martínez, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and Julio César Chávez Jr., the son of the legend. It's easy to sell this fight because it's a great betting fight. The odds right now are slightly in Sergio's favor but they could sway by the first bell when all the Méxican-American fans have made their way to the Vegas sports books.

PABLO SARMIENTO: This fight will be a very tough fight. We are fooling each other if we don't think that will be. We have worked very hard for the past two months. We need to be intelligent in the ring and we will come out victorious.

SAMSON LEWKOWICZ: As the advisor, I need to congratulate Lou DiBella. Many people say that it is hard to deal with Bob Arum and I would like to say everybody is wrong. It is an honor for me to work with him for the first time and this is actually the first big event of my life. I am looking forward to this because if you ask Martínez, you know it wasn't about the money. He wanted the fight and he wanted it very badly. He took it very personally. He didn't ask me "how much," he said "when." And "when" is September 15th, so I am very happy. I am looking forward to seeing what will be the best fight of the year.

LOU DiBELLA: And now I would like to introduce who I think is the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, some have him No. 3 but I believe he is No. 2 – the true middleweight world champion fighting a younger, bigger, stronger man and the son of a legend, Sergio Martínez is very confident and prepared and one of the best people in boxing, Sergio "Maravila" Martínez.

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: My trainer and I have worked very hard for the past two months. People will see who the REAL middleweight champion is because they know who the best is right now and that is Sergio "Maravila" Martínez. We all know that Chávez has the title, but on September 15th, the belt will go to the rightful owner and that is Sergio.

How personally is Sergio taking this fight?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: It is personal. Not only do I want the title, but I have wanted to fight Chávez for a long time.

What areas would you say you have a great advantage over Chávez?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: Julio César Chávez is fighting Sergio Martínez. Regardless of the preparation of his entire career, it would not make a difference; I will knock him out anyway. I believe that I am No. 2 in this sport, so that is good enough to know that I will beat him. He cannot beat me. He cannot. I don't really know if there is an easy aspect of him in his fighting, but I now that I am better than him.

What is the reason for this animosity?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: It is very simple. I cannot accept the fact he is world champion. The only reason he is world champion is because he is Julio César Chávez Jr., the son of the legend and his mouth is so big – even bigger than his own brain and he's talking too much.

SAMSON LEWKOWICZ: I have known Sergio Martínez for the past five years and I have never seen him so motivated. He never disliked any of his opponents and always had respect for them. But Chávez took something away from him and he believes he was wronged. And he believes that he had to wait too long to get it back. This all has given him more motivation from the people is Spain and he is an idol in Argentina. Chávez Jr. has a big mouth and he is very insulting and he will pay the price on September 15. I never go to camp, because everyone has their own job. Pablo does his own. Sergio does his own. I do my own. And Lou does his own. But I went twice, three times and I never saw him so motivated, so hungry – looking toward the date.

LOU DiBELLA: There is a contrast on how these guys were raised and who they are. Chávez Jr. was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth. He's been in the ring on someone's shoulders since he was a baby. He was handled with kid gloves as a fighter on the rise. He was basically handed the opportunity to win the belt maybe a little bit before he was the fighter he is now. Sergio Martínez was raised in a slum, the worst ghetto in Argentina, with no shoes. He had to fight his way thru bullies just to get to school. He had to go to Europe to fight for peanuts. He got $900 to fight Antonio Margarito. It took him until his early 30's to become a name or an attraction in boxing. Contrast the superstar kid, son of the legend whose had everything on a silver platter and the other had to work his ass off to get it.

Has Sergio seen improvements in Chávez Jr.?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: I believe that he has learned a lot from Freddie Roach. Secondly, regardless of the good man, he is not one of the great fighters. He is a good one, but not one of the best.

What kind of plan will you have for Chávez and are you worried about a decision?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: The speed and the power that I will deliver to Chávez on Septmbr 15th will be enough to knock him out. I will not wait for the judges.

What do you think needs to be done to get more of the best fighting the best?

LOU DiBELLA: I have always been able to do business with Bob Arum and he's always been able to do business with me. Apparently Dan Goossen and Gary Shaw can do business together and that's why these fights are happening. Here are two fights, one of which we think is not happening, and in the absence of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, this captures the attention of the casual boxing fan. Chávez Jr. and Martínez is a fight that is high on that list and the other fight, which is about as good a fight as you will get on premium TV. As long as there is an uneven playing field and as long as some people don't do business with others and as long as some personalities get in the way of others, you will not see the best fighting the best. At the moment, just celebrate the fact you have these really good fights in the next couple of weeks. What has to be done? It's very easy to make a deal – it's not rocket science – it's not that hard to figure out how to make a boxing deal. If it's a premium cable deal – you know what money is in the pot and you know what's available from sponsorship and gate. It doesn't take a nuclear physicist to do it. If it's a Pay-Per-View fight, you work out a percentage to get the deal done. That's what was done here and the winner is the fan.

LOU DiBELLA: The only roadblock to getting this fight done was they didn't think Chávez Jr. was ready – and that was good promotion and management. Chavez Jr. is now bigger. He looks like a different guy now – he's grown up. He has a he size advantage over Sergio which is why this fight is so appealing. The fight is now universally thought of as a very dangerous fight.

Do you believe your style will leave you open?

SERGIO MARTÍNEZ: I fought all 53 of my fights with my hands down. I did it with Paul Williams. I did it with Kelly Pavlik. Why not with Chávez? What will be the difference? I will do it again with my hands down.

SAMSON LEWKOWICZ: In the 53 fights, he only lost one – against Margarito. That was the only one and he was not ready for the fight. The other was a draw and that was robbery – against Paul Williams. His style has been very successful and now fighters are trying to imitate him. Right now I am in Russia and people have been coming up to me wishing Sergio good luck which says to me everyone knows Sergio's style, worldwide.

LOU DiBELLA: Even after 53 fights it still makes me nervous (LOL).

Broner or Berto will beat-up Guerrero. The Ghost is slow, no punching power, and he's easy to hit. He's just trying to get a big payday, let's not forget he ducked bum ass Maidana.

How is fighting Broner goin backwards? Broner is a bigger star than Guerrero. Dude is trying to fight anyone popular that he can get to get a cool payday. I think Broner would bring in bigger numbers than even Berto. If Guerrero can land Broner I think that would be great for him. Got Em!!

he didn't duck maidana he had a bad shoulder injury that required surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, which kept him out of boxing for a year.
Did he reschedule the fight with Maidana? No he fought some Euro bum and now he thinks he's elite. Again Berto will KO him and Broner will give him a beating.

maidana went on and fought other opponents. what you expect then to postpone a fight for a year?

I'm not even arguing who ghost can beat and who he can't, but its flat out wrong to say he ducked maidana.

I was a big fan of Smith too. If he could produce a little more offense he would've been nasty, his defense was always fine to watch.

I like the way he can pinpoint his punches and make it look so smooth and easy. He's a surgeon when it comes to picking opponents apart. His punches are lean n' mean, no wasted motions. My kind of fighter.

Ward proves that he’s unstoppable at 168 in easily beating Dawson
September 8th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Dan Ambrose: Right now the skies the limit for WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) after he effortlessly defeated Bad Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO on Saturday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

This fight proved that there’s no one that can touch the 28-year-old Ward right now. If Dawson, the best fighter at light heavyweight, can’t beat Ward then there probably isn’t a fighter at 168 that can touch him, at least for now. Ward has already proven that he’s better than some of the other top super middleweights like Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Sakio Bika and Carl Froch.

The only ones remaining at this point are Thomas Oosthuizen, Andre Dirrell, Adonis Stevenson, Kelly Pavlik, Lucian Bute, Don George and Edwin Rodriguez. My guess is Ward would dominate all of those guys without too many problems. Stevenson, a hard punching southpaw with amazing hand speed and explosive power, might be the only guy out of the bunch that might have a chance against Ward but it would only be a puncher’s chance.

Dawson was just hopefully lost tonight against Ward. Dawson was knocked down a grand total of three times in the fight before quitting in the 10th round after yet another knockdown. Ward looked at times like he was carrying Dawson because he seemed to let up on him after knocking him down in the 3rd and 4th rounds from big left hand shots to the head.

Dawson kept trying but he didn’t have the power, speed or boxing skills to compete with Ward in this fight. It was just a plain old fashioned backside whipping that Ward gave Dawson and was a big surprise. No one would have guessed that Dawson would lose as badly as he did tonight.

De La Hoya: I can make Broner-Guerrero happen
September 8th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (30-1, 18 KO’s) went straight to Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya to see if he’d be willing to match him up against fellow Golden Boy fighter former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) for a grudge match to settle their differences.

Here’s what Guerrero said to De La Hoya earlier today on twitter:

“Hey Oscar, you know I walk the walk. Let’s do it [Broner vs. Guerrero]. You say you can make [the fight], then let’s roll! Had to let young pup [Broner] know!”

De La Hoya responded with this:

“You guys [Broner-Guerrero] want to talk crap, then settle it in the ring? I can make it happen.”

So there it is. De La Hoya is now saying he can make the Guerrero vs. Broner fight happen. It remains to be seen if Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer will feel the same way about it, though. He wants to match Guerrero against Floyd Mayweather, but that isn’t going to happen. It might happen if Guerrero were to face and beaten Broner, the Mayweather-esque clone, but short of that the fight isn’t going to happen.

Hopefully, Schaefer doesn’t shield Guerrero from facing the best fighters thinking that he’s got to save him for dream fight agaisnt Mayweather. If he does that then Guerrero could go stale waiting for Mayweather to one day decide on fighting him.

Let me tell you, Mayweather is not going to waste time with Guerrero unless he knocks off a big name like Broner. I can Mayweather suddenly showing interest in fighting Guerrero if he beats Broner because I think Mayweather has taken a liking to Broner and probably wouldn’t be happy to see him lose to a bigger guy like Guerrero. However, I think Guerrero doesn’t have the talent to beat a guy like Broner. The power and the speed isn’t there for Guerrero, and he’s not as athletically talented like Broner is.

Andre Ward’s options for big fights at 168 are extremely limited
September 9th, 2012 | Post Comment

By Allan Fox: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s victories over Chad Dawson and Carl Froch in his last two fights may have effectively closed the door on him getting other big important fights of that kind in the future. Fighters tend to not want to take on a guy that is dominating everyone the way that Ward is right now, and I think he’s going to be sadly disappointed at what he’s going to settle for in his next fight.

Let’s look at what’s out there at super middleweight. There’s Carl Froch, Thomas Oosthuizen, Adonis Stevenson, Lucian Bute, Edwin Rodriguez, Sakio Bika, Andre Dirrell, Anthony Dirrell, Don George, Kelly Pavlik, Robert Stieglitz, Arthur Abraham, Brian Magee, James DeGale, Mikkel Kessler, George Groves and Karoly Balzsay.

The chances of Ward getting any of those guys for his next fight are pretty slim, and most of them aren’t big names anyway. Even if Ward can get someone like George, Rodriguez, Stieglitz, Balzsay or Magee, would anyone care to see those fights? None of those are big names and it would be dull to watch Ward beat up on them.

I think it’s safe to say that Ward isn’t going to get Kessler, Froch, Pavlik, Bute, Groves or DeGale in the ring. I see those fighters as moving past Ward as if he doesn’t exist to focus on trying to take the WBO strap off the weak link among the super middleweight champions Arthur Abraham.

Ward may have to settle for simply defending his titles against the mandatory challengers or the fringe contenders that his promoter can try and get to take the fight for a payday. I think Ward is going to be ignored by guys that are risk aversive with their careers and don’t want to risk taking a one-sided loss.

If Ward wants to get big fights he’s going to have to be more like Gennady Golovkin by being willing to move up or down in weight to try and get the best fights possible. That means that Ward is going to have to be flexible about fighting in other weight classes or at catchweights. He didn’t seem to want to fight Chad Dawson at a catchweight last Saturday night. But he may have to if he wants to keep from being limited to just the 168 pound fighters, many of which probably won’t him now.

What we could see is Ward spending more and more time waiting for big named fighters to agree to face him. I just hope Ward doesn’t miss more than 8 to 12 months at a time waiting for a big fight to open up, because I don’t think they will.
