I think Walters is going to have to move up in weight he couldn't get below 127. There goes the planned Walters vs Lomachenko for later this year in Dubai...How about Walters vs Gamboa at 130?

Walters Heavy On Second Try, Forced To Vacate Title
By Jake Donovan

So far, it's not an HBO main event to remember for Nicholas Walters. The unbeaten featherweight is now a former titlist, as he was forced to vacate his belt after weighing over the limit for Saturday's showdown with Miguel Marriaga at Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City.

Walters weighed 127.4 lbs. during the initial weigh-in and was granted two hours to lose the additional 1.4 lbs. He returned at 4:00 p.m. ET, but couldn't get any lower than 127 lbs., leaving him beltless and also subject to a pending fine from the New York State Athletic Commission.

"I'm coming off of an eight-month layoff. I tried everythinhg," Walter (25-0, 21KOs) offered as his alibi during an interview with Top Rank's Crystina Poncher.

Despite his coming in heavy, the show will still go on. Marriaga (20-0, 18KOs) will still be eligible to win the vacant title, having weighed in at 125.2 lbs. for his HBO debut.

Shame Walters missed weight. Marriaga looks like he easily made weight, could make the fight interesting.

Hope they find a way to show the Alvarez Vs. Dudchenko fight tonight. The swing bout will probably be Spizka Vs. Quezada though if there is one.

I know he's one dimensional but in fights like this against guys he's supposed to walk over he needs to understand the risk/reward in taking some small chances to be entertaining to get him bigger fights. Create a little buzz you know.
Definitely don't disagree, I just don't expect it from Lara. I don't think it's the one dimensional aspect of it more that he's just not going to take the risk. He could've gotten him out of there by turning it up at any point. Just like I feel he could've beaten Canelo by turning it up here and there.

Just the way he is.

well that's kinda what I'm saying by he "needs to". He could have beat Canelo if he let his hands go more. He could have KO'd Rodriguez inside 5 rounds. It's not just about not taking risks, it's fighting smarter. In his case, being more aggressive would make him a better fighter.

Being more aggressive as a mostly one handed fighter after spending your entire amateur/professional career doing the exact opposite is not as easy as it sounds. It would also open him up to get popped and Lara doesn't seem to have the greatest beard.

I'd love to see him be more aggressive, it could make him a better fight or it could get him put to sleep.

I don't see Lara ever really changing his style unless he needs to (not for fans sake), like Hurtado Vs. Whitaker where Whitaker was clearly losing and went crazy on Hurtado.

Whitaker knew he was losing and turned it on for the W, against Canelo Lara didn't try any harder as the fight went on, he gets the benefit of the doubt here because maybe he thought he was winning but he's got to learn from that.

His style he can never change, I'm not saying be Mike Tyson out there, all I'm saying is be a little more aggressive. Guys can fight a long time and tweak their games, we've seen that plenty of times in boxing so I don't really buy the whole it's how he fought as amateur therefore this is who he'll always be. He can be smarter, he can learn, he can improve.

But you're probably right about his chin; only he knows what he feels when he gets hit. Maybe he gets hurt or rattled or just bothered too much for comfort and he's protecting himself. I suspected perhaps that was part of the reason he didn't open up more against Canelo. But a guy like Rodriguez you'd think he could open it up a lil more as there isn't much risk at all. idk man, for me it's frustrating because I think he could be so much better if he could just put together some more combos, follow up on his nice 1-2 and attack the body more.

I agree with the other points. We see guys do things all the time that other fighters don't do. The main reasons why I'm saying Lara specifically is not likely to change his style is that we've seen enough of Lara throughout his career and he's shown absolutely nothing to hint towards him changing anything.

Every blemish on Lara's record is somewhat disputed. I thought he beat Williams & Vanes and lost to Canelo & Molina. He may not feel like he needs to change his style, who knows.

Some guys just are what they are and I think Lara fits that category. He's not young, has been fighting exactly the same forever, has proven he can perform at a high level fighting his style, and may be worried about his chin if he leaves his self exposed.

I'd love for Lara to open up more and feel with his talent he probably could and be fine, especially fighting guys like Delvin who shouldn't be in a fucking title fight to begin with but that's a different argument. I just feel like if he didn't in the biggest fight of his life that could have catapulted his career into serious paydays, chances are he's not unless forced to.

Do Lara and Floyd still share the 154 belt? If so, then I'm pretty sure Haymon would get that fight done.
Yeah Floyd is the WBA "Super Champion" and Lara the WBA "regular" champion.

Fucking WBA is so God damn retarded.

But Floyd said he's going to vacate his belts so the WBA will just elevate Lara to super champion and have whoever fight for the vacant "regular" title.

This is why I hate the WBA. How they can justify giving out two belts in each division is beyond belief.

2?? Don't forget they also have "interim" champions that actually defend those interim titles for years without ever fighting another champion. It's pathetic.

They had an interview where they elevated Thurman to "regular" champion and they interviewed him about it and he said something along the lines of - I didn't even know that happened, but thanks.

I hate the WBA more than any other sanctioning body. They're also making unifications impossible since other sanctioning bodies don't want to set up, rightfully so, unification bouts with regular or interim champions and aren't sanctioning those fights.

Zlaticanin wasn't fucking around. Wins over Petrov, Burns, & now Redkach should be getting more props than he is.

Hopefully he gets a crack at a title next. It's well deserved.
