Lightweight titlist Anthony Crolla and interim titleholder Ismael Barroso have been ordered to meet in a mandatory fight.

On Nov. 21, Crolla knocked out Darleys Perez in the fifth round of a rematch of their draw to win a 135-pound world title. On Dec. 12, Barroso scored a fifth-round knockout of Kevin Mitchell to claim the vacant interim belt.

The WBA had said the winners would have to meet next and made the official order on Thursday. Crolla (30-4-3, 12 KOs), 29, of England, and Barroso (19-0-2, 18 KOs), 32, a hard-punching southpaw from Venezuela, must meet on or before April 12.

“If the parties fail to submit signed bout contracts within 30 days, a call for a purse bid will be issued,” the WBA told Crolla promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and Barroso promoter Greg Cohen in a letter.

Once Crolla-Barroso takes place (and assuming it is not a draw or no decision) it will be another weight class in which the WBA will have reduced the number of titles to only one, as WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Jr. recently told ESPN.com he was dedicated to doing.
________

I love it. Looks like WBA is going through with this. They're doing it in strawweight too, winner of Knockout Vs. Buitrago II is going to be the mandatory for Budler and that'll get strawweight down to 1 WBA title.

Bernstein: Golovkin Clearly Beats Canelo, Can't Imagine Him Losing - Boxing News
If the fight actually goes down, Showtime's expert analyst Al Bernstein has no idea how Canelo can possibly pull off a victory.

Bernstein gives Golovkin several advantages- in experience, size, power, skill. Canelo's only edge on paper is youth and potentially speed. Both fighters have good defensive skills. One of the major obstacles at the moment in making the fight a reality is the weight limit. Canelo has never fought beyond a catch-weight of 155-pounds and wants to face Golovkin at that exact weight - but GGG wants the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds.

"Well I hope it happens this September, that would give Canelo time to gain his weight. Gennady Golovkin’s problem is that nobody will fight him for the most part. I hope that fight happens, I think Golovkin is the clear winner in that fight, it’s hard for me to figure out a way that Canelo can beat him," Bernstein said to On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"It could be a very interesting and exciting fight, potentially, but Canelo isn’t a big middleweight and Golovkin has certainly been at 160lbs for a long time. I just can’t imagine Golovkin losing that fight, but I hope it happens, it would be a monstrous fight for the sport."

Per G @Golden BoyBoxing, several heavys have turned down facing Luis Ortiz on March 5 in Washington,DC, some without even hearing the money!

Pelullo told me Fedosov turned down Ortiz because he wanted 8 weeks to train not 5. Said they'll take it with 8 weeks notice. That's fair.

Among opponents (their teams really) I'm told turned down 3/5 HBO main event vs Luis Ortiz: Carlos Takam, Andy Ruiz, Andrey Fedosov. #boxing...See More

I can't see ANYONE worth a Damn wanting to fight Ortiz right now, dude is scary. It's high risk low reward right now since he's just now getting on people's radar. That's ok though, he just needs to keep doing what he's doing and stay very active and just do the Golovkin strategy where if the top guys are saying no, just keep fighting at least four times a year and work your way into title eliminaters/mandatory spots and force the action. The big fights will come eventually as long as he stays active. That's the key - he can't afford to sit on the sidelines hoping a big fight will come his way, doesn't work that way, keep knocking fools out and people notice.

Angel Garcia on Amir Khan: ‘Why would we fight Khan?’

Angel Garcia remains frustrated by the WBC’s requirement that his son Danny defend his newly won WBC welterweight crown against Amir Khan.

In the wake of Garcia’s decision-victory over Robert Guerrero on Saturday, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said that Garcia “must” fight Khan, his mandatory challenger next “by June.”

On Wednesday morning, Angel Garcia, who trains his son, was defiant and puzzled why the WBC would want his son to face Khan again after their first fight was so lopsided. Garcia (32-0, 18 knockouts) stopped Khan in four rounds in 2012, flooring him three times in a junior welterweight unification match.

“I don’t see nothing there,” Garcia told RingTV.com. “(If they fight) it’s going to be a repeat of the same thing again. Danny will knock Khan out. I’m not underestimating him but…I don’t want to get into the WBC politics. Danny is the champ. But I don’t see nothing happening there, in my opinion. I don’t think we’re even looking at that, honestly. Why would we fight Khan? There are bigger names out there right now. Khan had his time. He made a lot of money in boxing. I don’t know why he stood around waiting for Floyd (Mayweather) to fight. It never happened. I don’t see (this fight) taking place.”

At the same time, Garcia acknowledged he may ultimately have to face Khan again if the WBC threatens to strip his son of his title. Danny has no plans to vacate the title to avoid a Khan rematch, Angel said.

“We’re not trying to go on bad terms with nobody,” Garcia said of the WBC. “Were not trying to do that. Why would you be the champ and then vacate the belt? That’s disrespecting the boxing world. If we have to do it then we have to do what we have to do. But I’m just saying I don’t see nothing there for me. (But) we’re not going to run from anybody. We’re not scared of (Khan).”

Garcia was careful about calling out any future opponents, though he did say a match with the winner of Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter (he’s picking Thurman by decision) on March 12 for the WBA welterweight championship would be a “great fight.”

Angel said that Danny will definitely fight again in the next “three to four months,” erasing the possibility that his son will remain idle in anticipation of a fight with the winner of Thurman-Porter.

“We’re not going to sit around and wait eight months,” Garcia said. “That’s definitely. We got to be back in the ring no later than three to four months. So they’re fighting in March so I guess we’re fighting right after that.”

As for Thurman-Porter, Garcia believes that Thurman’s boxing ability and ring IQ will prove too much for the hyper-aggressive Porter.

“Thurman is a more smarter fighter than Porter,” Garcia said. “(Porter) fights like the West Coast, he has more a Mexican style, he just comes aggressive like Guerrero like that. A fighter like that, you have to be smart and use your legs and you could probably dominate the whole fight and Thurman is pretty good with his legs so I’m going with Thurman. I like the way (Thurman) uses the ring.”

He's already in line for a mandatory. With the WBA in the process of eliminating nonsense titles like the one Ortiz has currently. No surprise they're trying to schedule a fight on 3/5, the same day Chagaev defends his regular WBA title against Lucas Browne. WBA should announce that Chagaev/Browne (regular) has to fight the winner of Ortiz/TBA (interim) and the winner of that fight will become the WBA mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury (currently).

This mf Pascal came out to the presser with bananas lol wow this is a new low for Pascal, trying to bait Kovalev calling him a racist the entire time, in the end Kovalev's trainer John David Jackson and Pascal had to be separated, JDJ defending Kovalev saying he isn't a racist etc while Pascal is screaming and JDJ calling him an idiot and they get in eachother faces. I think Kovalev might actually kill him this time, better hope for a merciful ref.

And why are they fighting again?
Pascal wanted a rematch. Originally the idea was Pascal was to fight Stevenson and the winner fight Kovalev but that fell through and wanted Kovalev immediately. First fight was entertaining and it's good money in Canada. Kill time for Andre Ward (supposedly later this year) and no one else to fight at the moment. It was either fight Pascal, sit out and wait or fight someone most people never heard of. Kovalev and Stevenson are in talks for a June PPV which can't happen any sooner apparently (Pac and Canelo PPVs in April/May, so June is what they're pushing for).
