Speaking of this fight, I love how the WBC took a dope concept in having tournaments in stacked 147/154 lb divisions to fill the vacant titles and then completely shitted on everything with the nonsense they announced they were doing. Basically no tournament, immediate vacant title fights, and a bunch of other nonsense that includes unexplained "wildcard fights"

Yeah man how lame is that? On top of that they are breaking their own rules, per Fat Dan:

But even if you can stomach Guerrero in a world title fight, the WBC clearly is violating its rules since it only ranks Guerrero sixth, meaning none of the five others in front of him were given a chance to participate in the title fight, including Amir Khan, whom the WBC ranks No. 1.

Instead, Sulaiman announced that Khan will be the mandatory challenger for the Garcia-Guerrero winner.

So really what they did was just skip the tournament altogether, take an existing fight and make it for a vacant belt and make Khan mandatory - essentially they just want to make Garcia vs Khan II. What a jip

Which is dumb cause they can likely STILL make Garcia Vs. Khan II though the tournament. Garcia Vs. Guerrero and Khan Vs. whoever and the winners fight each other. So here's the current rankings ..

1 .- Amir Khan (GB) SILVER
2 .- Danny Garcia (US)
3 .- Shawn Porter (US)
4 .- Lamont Peterson (US)
5 .- Andre Berto (US)
6 .- Robert Guerrero (US)
7 .- Omar Figueroa (Mexico/US)
8 .- Konstantin Ponomarev (Russia) NABF
9 .- Errol Spence (US)
10 .- Ray Robinson (US)
11 Jessie Vargas (US)
12 .- Sammy Vasquez Jr (US)
13 .- Charles Manyuchi (Zimbabwe) ABU/INTL
14 .- Alfonso Gomez (Mexico)
15 .- Sadam Ali (US)

They can do Khan Vs. whoever in the top 5 not Garcia and the winners of both of those fights fight each other. Considering they'd each be coming off a WBC top 6 ranked win at worst they can be moved up in the rankings and make a vacant title fight a legit thing. It's just dumb and doesn't make sense.

The main thing is, don't announce a fucking tournament and no one looks forward to it.

Lucas Matthysse Ready For Camp, March/April Return Eyed
By Marcelo Gonzalez

After his knockout loss to unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol in October of last year, tough Argentinean Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs) took a much needed vacation with his family in Trelew, Chubut, Argentina.

Matthysse is already preparing to hit training camp to start working for his return to boxing, according to what was discussed by his co-promoters Mario Arano and Golden Boy Promotions. Arano says the return would be in late March or early April in the United States.

In the coming days, Matthysse will be training in Junin with his trainer Luis "Cuty" Barrera at the Arano Box Gym. The exact date and opponent is unknown at the moment.

Right now the fighter and Arano are trying to determine if the boxer is going to remain at junior welterweight or move up to the welterweight division. Right now they are leaning to a move to 147-pounds.

"We have a few days to evaluate all of the factors with Golden Boy Promotions, but we are considering of having Lucas reappear at welterweight," said Arano, adding: "The boxing market points to 147. Matthysse could have some big opportunities in this division."

After the loss to Postol, in Carson, Lucas returned to Junin to accompany his daughter Priscilla in the final months of the school year. In mid-December he traveled to spend the holidays in Trelew, his hometown, where he spent several weeks resting and "charging the batteries" for his return.

Some of the opponents mentioned for Matthysse include Mauricio Herrera and Ruslan Provodnikov. The return weight depends on which opponent is secured. Provodnikov is willing to fight at 147.

The WBO pulled some fuckery yesterday too. They made Bradley super champion (I didn't even know the wbo had that?!) which seems to be away around the Sadam Ali mandatory situation. smdh
So I didn't know they had super champions but I'm not sure if they treat them like the WBA where they don't really have to fight mandatories or that they even crown a "regular" champion in that category. Check this out from Feb 2015 on their website.

Pacquiao Receives WBO Super Champion Belt - WBO

"Revered Filipino boxing superstar Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao who has just returned to the Philippines after a 3-week hectic tour that brought him to New York, Los Angeles, London, Miami and Washington, received his WBO super champion belt from WBO Vice-President for Asia-Pacific region Leon Panoncillo Jr Tuesday night here at Pacquiao’s sprawling residence-complex.

The $10,000 worth diamond-encrusted custom-designed belt was awarded by the WBO to Pacquiao after the world’s only 8-division world champion and the WBO champion of the decade wrested back his welterweight crown from Timothy Bradley on April 12, 2014. According to Panoncillo, WBO president Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel wanted to have the belt given to Pacquiao earlier but scheduling conflict and Pacquiao’s hectic lifestyle contributed to the delay.

A super champion is a rare recognition given by the WBO, one of the world’s top governing bodies of boxing, to its champions who have achieved preeminent status while holding the championship belt. The WBO’s current super champions include heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine, junior heavyweight champion Marco Huck of Germany and light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev of Russia.

“This is great for the unification!,” Pacquiao, who has tendered a dinner for the WBO and selected guests, blurted out upon receiving the belt to the amusement of everyone present knowing that an elephant in the room – the highly desired and highly anticipated Pacquiao-Mayweather welterweight unification bout for the WBC and WBO belts – casts its huge shadow. Pacquiao later enthralled everyone by discussing the details of his one-on-one meeting with Mayweather and the many details of the ongoing negotiation. “But this is off the record,” he said."

____

I know the WBO forced mandatories upon Wlad (Alex Leapai) & Huck (Krzysztof Glowacki). Also in all those cases above Pacquiao, Huck, Wlad there was never a "regular" WBO champion in those weight classes.

Dan Rafael chat wrap 1/15:

- Thurman vs. Porter will be announced later today or during Saturday's broadcast.
- The undercard could be: Pedraza-Stephen Smith and Edwin Rodriguez-Thomas Williams.
- The Mohegan Sun is a great resort and hopes the fight ends up there. Capacity could go up to 10k.
- When Tarver beat RJJ, RJJ was not in his prime. Had RJJ been in his prime, he would have beaten Tarver much easier than their first fight.
- Wilder by KO, Glazkov-Martin is a coin flip, but picking Glazkov by decision.
- Aaron Martinez has never been given anything, was thrown right in, and worked a day job. He was hosed vs. Guerrero and glad to see the same didn't happen vs. Alexander.
- Loeffler says he is still trying to make a deal for GGG-Saunders. He will believe it when he sees it.
- GGG has until Jan. 19th to negotiate with BJS, then the IBF will order Tureano Johnson as his mandatory.
- ODH knows GGG is worth more than 10%. It is all games.
- Lara is trolling GGG trying to get a fight. No one cares about that fight and Lara is collecting financial handouts from Haymon, while GGG is actually selling out arenas.
- No word on Lomachenko. TR is trying to figure what is next out.
- Ibeabuchi will probably try to fight again. Definitely will not be allowed to fight in Nevada and likely not in the US (deportation).
- Loves a Vargas vs. Salido fight if it can be made.
- There are fighters at PBC who are unhappy with the way things are going.
- PBC finances are basic math and to him they never added up. Thinks that PBC's lack of shows to start the year is writing on the wall that they are not nearly as financially strong. The countdown is on until they run out of money.
- If PBC folded his fighters are still contractually tied with him being their adviser or contract manager.
- Likes the idea of there being a financial advantage to winning a fight, but any attempts that have been made to reward the winner more than the loser has never gone anywhere.
- Of course Garcia's Dad likes the ideas of fighting easy fights for lots of money. Garcia has been matched with bad opponents for good money, but he has also beaten a lot of good fighters. You cannot totally bash Garcia. Yes he has had bad moments, but he also has really good names on his resume. Guerrero isn't a great fight, but Guerrero is a legit pro.
- Garcia vs. Guerrero doesn't do much for him and is disappointing as the "big" fight selected for Fox's debut. This fight isn't even in the top 20 fights that PBC could make.
- Garcia vs. Guerrero is at the Staples Center...but the amount of fans showing up wouldn't even fit the StubHub.
- Garcia and Guerrero were never marketed to the hispanic community. It is crazy to have this fight at the Staples Center. They are going to have to give away a lot of tickets to make the arena look decently full. On the other hand, Mares-Santa Cruz was real fans who bought tickets to root for their fighters.
- Hopes that FNF comes back.
- Was a huge Mancini fan. He is a good guy and fun to hang out with.
- Doesn't know the odds of Berto vs. Ortiz 2 happening. Would love to see it.
- If you think GGG is scared to fight anyone at MW or criticize his resume you are an idiot who doesn't understand the business side of boxing. You can't force people to fight you.
- The combo of Pascal and Roach shouldn't hurt Pascal, but it won't do much vs. Kovalev.
- This fight is actually a really good fight for Wilder in comparison to his previous opponents.
- Wilder losing tomorrow isn't a huge upset. It would be a mild upset. Spilzka can bang and Wilder's chin is shaky.
- If Wilder wins, guesses we will see Wilder-Povetkin in the summer.
- Best cut men? Russ Amber, Miguel Diaz, Danny Milano, and Rafael Garcia.
- His favorite boxing writer? Michael Katz of the NY Times and NY Daily News.
- Doug Fischer is 100% correct in that fighters today to not take criticism as well as fighters from the past. Fighters are coddled by unprofessional blogs/websites that want fighter access/fight access.
- Mikhaylenko is trying to remain on the Jan. 30th card. They need to find an opponent that everyone can agree on.
- Fights that were not made, but wishes they had: Lewis-Bowe, Tyson-Holyfield (1991), Mayweather-Pacquiao (2009), SRL-Pryor, SRL-McCallum, DLH-Tszyu, Lennox-Wlad, Foreman-Holmes, Foreman-Tyson, Marquez-Morales, RJJ-BHop 2 (2001), and Mayweather-Williams.
- Annoys him that JMM vs. Morales was never made.
- Broner's response to his comments about needing to grow up proved that he does need to grow up and that Dan will need to wish for Broner to grow up again next year.
- Considers Abraham the favorite vs. Ramirez.
- Chance that Canelo's May 7th fight could open the new Vegas arena.
- Luis Ortiz may headline a fight on HBO on March 5 or 12, with Ali-Vargas as the undercard.
- Does not think Jacobs needs to give Mora a rematch.
- Doubts JMM vs. Cotto happens. A weird fight, but he would be interested.
- Postol vs. Broner? Postol jabs his way to victory.
- Frampton vs. Quigg is a 50/50 fight.
- Top 5 all time CW (off top of the head): Holyfield, Jirov, Huck, Haye, and JC Gomez. Johnny Nelson maybe 6th.
- Holyfield vs. Qawi 1 is the greatest CW fight of all time and Toney-Jirov is second.
- Showtime will be having old fight replays all year as they are celebrating 30 years of boxing. Showed Holyfield-Dokes last night.
- Why is the WBC only including PBC fighters in their tournament? The magic of Al Haymon.
- Fact or fiction, boxing belts are worthless? Mostly fiction. His problem is the number of titles, but titles can be important when looked at in the proper perspective. Fury is the HW champion...Wilder is a titleholder.
- Margarito's fight likely will be televised on UniMas or beIN.
- Lemieux's chances vs. Canelo? Only slightly better than he had vs. GGG.

This may be some of the best news ever. I hope it actually comes to fruition and they start working on getting this done ASAP. I guess they finally got enough backlash about the nonsense their causing.
_________
Can it be? Might it be? Is the WBA actually going to do the right thing? Going to do something that makes sense? Going to do something -- gulp -- that is good for boxing?

Now I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but at the moment it seems as though the answer is yes. I say that very gently.

Anyone who has read my work will know that I have had issues with the WBA for years -- the organization that recently had a deceased boxer in its rankings for several months.

My main issue has been that the WBA crowns up to four titleholders in the same weight class -- super, regular, unified and interim -- seemingly only for the sake of generating more sanction fees. Some fighters and promoters are all too happy to go along with it too.

It’s enough to drive me, and others, crazy because whatever short-term gain there might be for the few individuals who benefit from all the extra belts, I’ve never thought it was worth the long-term damage to whatever credibility was left in the sport. It just smacked of stupidity to have more than one titleholder in the same organization in the same division.

Over the years, I have had many arguments with WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Jr., whom I like personally, even if we probably couldn’t agree that grass is green and the sky is blue.

But maybe, just maybe, we are entering a new era with the WBA. I said maybe, but in the spirit of being a good sport, I will give Mendoza -- who was recently promoted to WBA president because his father, longtime president Gilberto Mendoza Sr., is terminally ill and stepped down -- the benefit of the doubt and say it looks as though we are.

The elimination of multiple world titles in the same division will not happen overnight. I get that but Mendoza has told me personally that he is going to reduce the number of titles. I will take him at his word until proven otherwise.

“I am working to reduce the titles,” Mendoza told me on Tuesday. “At first some promoters [might] complain. I just tell them it is my final decision. They would have to live with it.”

So far, so good. When the new WBA ratings came out this week, Floyd Mayweather, the WBA’s “super champion” at junior middleweight and welterweight, had finally been removed from the list of titleholders and his belts vacated. It’s about time, considering he retired more than four months ago.

With Mayweather out of the title picture -- although he can have a crack at either belt right away should he return, and I have no problem with that -- that means Keith Thurman is the organization’s top welterweight titlist and Erislandy Lara is the top junior middleweight titleholder.

There are still interim titleholders in both divisions (Jack Culcay at 154 and David Avanesyan at147), but Mendoza told me Thurman and Lara will not be “elevated” to “super champion” status and the interim titleholders will not be reclassified as “regular” titleholders.

Further, Mendoza said he would eventually order Thurman and Lara to fight the interim titleholders in mandatory defenses, which would reduce the number of titleholders in those two weight classes to one each. Amazing.

Mendoza also laid out plans to get down to one titleholder in the heavyweight division, in which the WBA currently recognizes three.

Tyson Fury is the “super champion” (and the lineal champ) based on his Nov. 28 upset of Wladimir Klitschko, Ruslan Chagaev is the “regular” titleholder and big puncher Luis Ortiz is the interim titlist.

Chagaev is already scheduled to face Lucas Browne in a defense on March 5. The winner must next face Fres Oquendo, as ordered by the outcome of Oquendo’s lawsuit in United States federal court. That is one side of the so-called bracket.

On the other side, Fury and Klitschko will meet again in the late spring or summer.

“When Klitschko and Fury met the first time, there was a contract approved by the WBA that had a rematch clause that we intend to respect,” Mendoza said.

Meanwhile, Ortiz must face Alexander Ustinov on or before June 19. While Ortiz is likely to fight on HBO against somebody else on March 5, Ustinov would come next. Mendoza said the Fury-Klitschko II winner will have to fight the Ortiz-Ustinov winner, which would get rid of the interim title.

Whoever emerges from Fury/Klitschko/Ortiz/Ustinov will be mandated to face whoever emerges from the Chagaev/Browne/Oquendo bouts, thus eliminating yet another belt.

“The winners of the two groups will fight for the world championship,” Mendoza said. “And the WBA will have only one champion, as everybody expects.”

Of course, if a unification fight -- say, Fury versus Deontay Wilder -- presented itself I would be fine with a delay in the WBA’s road to one belt. But the plan is in place and I ask: What was so hard about that?

Joseph Parker: Samoan blood, Kiwi heart

Apia, Samoa. It might not quite be ‘The Rumble in the Jungle,’ but as far flung and unexpected locations for a boxing match go the tropical balmy climes of Samoa are right up there. And there is a palpable sense of anticipation breezing through this tiny island nation right now ahead of Joseph Parker’s clash with his first southpaw opponent, American, Jason Bergman.

Even Parker’s promoters Duco have cheekily drawn parables with Ali and Foreman’s historic fight, labelling Parker and Bergman’s clash the slightly more clunky sounding ‘The Rumble in Paradise.’ Whether a rumble ensues remains to be seen but the exotic surroundings that make up Samoa’s sunny islands definitely qualifies as paradise.

Bergman too is entering into the spirit of proceedings delivering an Ali-esque promise to defeat Parker and ‘shock the world,’ which as catchy as it sounds may rank as one of the more outlandish overstatements in an outlandish sport.

Putting historical significances to one side there are certain similarities to the fight in Zaire all those years ago; Samoa is a country of modest financial resources, starved of world class sporting events, but now a big show has landed on their doorstep and the star is something of a local boy no less.

World rated heavyweight Joseph Parker may have been born in New Zealand but his parents both hail from Samoa and the family retains property in the country. Such is Parker’s status in his parent’s country of birth he has been granted the high chief status title of, ‘Lupesoliali Laauli’ and he also retains strong roots with the tiny island nation, holidaying there every year.

For Joseph it’s a combination of Samoan blood and Kiwi heart.

Fury's Coach Feels Charles Martin is Just as Good as Deontay Wilder

Updated at 03:53 PM EST, Thu Jan 21, 2016 Read More By :
by Edward Chaykovsky

Peter Fury, uncle and trainer of WBO/IBO/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, saw impressed by last Saturday's performance from unbeaten Charles Martin, who captured the vacant IBF belt with a third round TKO of Czar Glazkov at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Glazkov suffered a knee injury during the third round and he was unable to continue. Fury held the IBF belt as well when he defeat Wladimir Klitschko last November.

The IBF stripped Fury for his inability to make a mandatory defense against Glazkov.

Fury sat ringside at Barclays and watched the heavyweight action in the ring. WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was featured in the main event of the card, where he knocked out Artur Szpilka in the ninth round.

Fury (25-0, 18KOs) is heading into a rematch with Klitschko in the coming months. If Fury wins his upcoming defense, Martin (23-0-1, 21KOs) and Wilder (36-0, 35KOs) would both be future targets.

Peter Fury holds both Wilder and Martin on the same level. He felt Martin was well on his way to beating Glazkov before the injury occurred.

"I had Wilder a couple of rounds behind before the knockout. He got the knockout and that was the main thing but it wasn't an impressive performance. Charles Martin looks very good. From what I've seen of him, he's useful. I had him beating Glazkov before the injury and saw the fight going only one way, to be honest," Peter Fury told Sky Sports.

"I think Martin is equally as good as Wilder, as far as I can see. He looks impressive and I think he's up there. He has to be taken seriously and he's the IBF champion now. I liked his punches and the way he was relaxed. Martin was doing everything properly. I haven't seen much but from what I have seen, he looks impressive."
