Cleveland Browns nearly acquired San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh for draft picks - ESPN

Browns tried to get Jim Harbaugh

Updated: February 21, 2014, 6:19 PM ET

By Pat McManamon | ESPN.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Browns were close to a trade that would have sent 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh from San Francisco to Cleveland, Pro Football talk reported Friday, citing multiple league sources.

According to the website, a deal was in place that would have sent multiple draft picks to the 49ers for Harbaugh, but the coach ultimately decided not to leave San Francisco. Harbaugh has coached the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game three years in a row, and to the Super Bowl once.

"The team conducted an extensive coaching search, and explored several options," the Browns said in a statement Friday. "That search produced an outstanding head coach in Mike Pettine, and we're excited about his future with the club."

When Pettine was hired, then-Browns CEO Joe Banner acknowledged there was one last "mystery candidate" out there who'd been under consideration but declined to name him.

A 49ers source told NFL Network that the report was "ridiculous" and "completely false."

There is precedent for a coach being traded. In 2002, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave the Oakland Raiders two first-round picks, two second-rounders and $8 million for Jon Gruden.

The Browns, who finished 4-12 this past season after starting 3-2, have amassed picks for this year's draft, among them the fourth and 26th overall.

49ers are denying it heavily, Browns haven't said anything. and didnt the Browns interview Jim Tomsula?

a couple of things here. Harbaugh wants an extension, the Niners said last week they'd like to give him one. now theyre saying they wont pay him like a "super bowl winning head coach" until he wins one. he did take the Niners to 3 consecutive NFC Championships, and a super bowl. Essentially he has this year to win a Super Bowl, because they'd like to do the extension by next offseason. hes signed thru 2015.

and while a couple of first round draft picks would be nice, its not worth it.

also, i dont get how Harbaugh can turn down the trade? coaches have the power to do that? whats the point of even trying to make the trade then?

That would be seriously stupid to trade away Harbaugh.....they were garbage before him and had virtually the same talent when he turned them into a team headed for the super bowl.

But it didn't happen so more crazy Harbaugh vs Carroll antics, yay!

wonder where it came from then?
they've been talking about harbaugh possibly leaving since the middle of last season. something definitely is going on.
He has a strong personality, they should just let the man run the team as he sees fit.

don't get me wrong, I can see it happening simply because it happened to Gruden. And I agree Harbaugh does have a strong personality, maybe he's getting under the wrong peoples skin in the 49ers office. the fans better hope that the 49ers don't do no stupid shit like this.....take a look at what happened to our franchise after that!

um, what? maybe you misunderstood what I wrote, the team had the talent but were garbage (obviously because of coaching) and once there was a good coach in place they go to 3 straight nfc conference games. smh
This is true this is exactly what you said the first time you said it and it was very clear and easy to comprehend
