Anime MUST BE watched in Japanese for me....dubs are horrible and ruin a show quicker than anything
I'm going to list some things I'm a fan of the manga (comic) instead of the anime as well or there is no anime.
I don't mean to put down anyone but a lot of the things people are listing is like the generic/mainstream things and most of ya'll had to have started off of cartoon network
here my favs
MONSTER -only out in the USA as a manga called -Naoki Urasawa's Monster in the USA.
Urasawa really is a genius storyteller...the anime is great too because of sound,music and voices etc,,, and being a perfect adaption of the manga the anime is in some ways more intense than the manga
The story is just great and epic. 74 episodes/18 manga volumes
20th Century Boys -manga only so far I hope a anime is made soon
Naoki Urasawa stepped it up even further and totally outdone himself with this its way better than Monster.
Simply amazing story,plot,plot twists,thrill,and mystery
Death Note -anime just started and its great the voices,music etc... is helping the anime to be more intense than the manga at times
City Hunter TV series -
City Hunter,City Hunter 2,City Hunter 3 and City Hunter 91
One Piece -too bad this series is totally censored and edited f*cking ruined beyond belief in the USA.
Japanese version is awesome
manga is better but the anime is good to watch too -both really long manga is 43 volumes + weekly chapters and anime is 284 episodes so far
Kimagure Orange Road -anime & manga
Maison Ikkoku-manga but I also like the anime
Fist Of The North Star (Hokuto No Ken) I love the manga (comic) not the anime...the anime sucks -27 volumes long

Just incase you didn't know there is more to that series.
Its called Rurouni Kenshin.
Trust & Betrayal is a 4 episode OVA which covers parts of vol 19,all of 20 and the beginning of vol 21 of the manga(comic) its the only part of the Jinchu arc of Kenshin to be animated.

Tokyo Arc Manga volume 1-6....Rurouni Kenshin anime episodes
1-12,19-21,23-24
Kyoto Arc manga volume 7-18 (first couple chapters) anime episodes 28-62
Jinchu Arc manga volume 18-28 (end) only anime part is the OVA which shows Kenshin's past and that is Samurai X Trust & Betrayal
Rurouni Kenshin in the beginning is a little bit light hearted with the Tokyo arc as it introduces the characters but it has its serious moments but it also blends comedy into it.
Once the Kyoto arc starts in Rurouni Kenshin the series becomes really great and is very serious until the end only a few times is there any comedy.

just messing witchu man. My list is limited compared to some of u guys tho. Dirty pair (started me on anime) FMA, Naruto, cowboy bebop, trigun, ranma 1/2,Love hina, and i just started watching GTO I might peep some of ur guys stuff tho cuz i havent been watching too much anime lately.

I wish ADV would release/license the original Dirty Pair tv series.
GTO is cool but the anime doesn't have the whole story only covers 13 of 25 volumes and there is some parts in those first 13 volumes that never were animated.
And the manga is more graphic.
