The best way to prevent the red rings of death is to buy the accessory fans that Microsoft recommends. It's interesting because Microsoft isn't affiliated with the makers of the fan, but they urge you to buy them. Anywho, to answer your question, the best thing to is to make sure you're not using the HD cables on a regular tv. I did it the first time I plugged in my 360 just because I wasn't savvy with the product. After you've determined that's not the problem, look into checking the plugs for rust or unnecessary bends or missing teeth. You'd be amazed how many bad cables Microsoft accidentally sends in their XBOX shipments.

If you still haven't determined the problem, you shoud try all new cables. I think they're warranted through the corporation within a year of purchase. Just send the old ones back, good or bad, and they'll shoot you a new set. And if you still haven't figured out what's wrong with it, then you need to seek professional i.e. nerd help.

1. Try the towel trick. It will get your machine to work for a while. Wrap the system up with 2 towels and let it play for like half an hour. It will overheat, and you will get flashing red lights. You then unplug the system, take the towels off and let it cool for half an hour. Then it should start right up.

2. Call Microsoft and tell them you have the red rings, they'll fix your shit for free.

I have an old 360 (before they supposedly fixed the red rings), and I am always worried Ill get them. What is this fan product called? Could you hook me up with a link?

NYKO makes it. There are others on the market, but if you like to stick with Microsoft backed products then you should pick this up. It saved me from the red ring of death on my 360 before it was too late. The main thing I noticed was the player skipping on new discs, getting warm around the seams of the console, freezing up, and only loading portions of the stages/levels/course I was on. If you're having that problem, you seriously need to consider the fan. Those are all cooling related symptoms of the 360.
