problem is that there is no longer room for emotion in mainstream hip hop. I cant even remember the last hip hop song I heard on radio that didnt have dance/club theme as its main selling point. Maybe it's the radio station i listen to, but seriously, i cant name one rap song in the past 2 years on radio that isnt dance/club shit or envoked the slightest hint of anything else.
IMO, i feel that many people are using hip pop to make them happy and forget about how shitty times are for this country and the gloomy future it holds. Back during the depression a lot of music tended to be on the uplifting side, not to say there werent songs about standing in line to get some food, but during times of unrest and turmoil, the music that comes out seems to do the exact opposite as the times of the nation, and what people want to hear is feel good music.
Look at the 70's when gas prices were high and economic recession was around the corner. Disco came to the rescue to lighten everyone up. Does this scenario sound familiar? I think it does.
I think One good Time is an amazing song, and would love to see it get pushed as a single, but do you really think the youth of today want to hear a song about crying and depression, when they could be listening to some shit like T pain or Soulja Boy and forget about how it cost $4.00+ a gallon to put gas in their car and that our country is in a state of uneasiness?
Thats why a club/ dance song IMO is still the best route to push as a single. Get one song out, then maybe you can push the emotional stuff.
