Win or lose, Phillipe Nover to remain in lightweight division

Beginning from the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," a disturbing pattern has been established with the show's contestants.

Success on the show -- up to and including winning the entire event -- has not translated into continued competition in the same weight class.

But despite having never before competed at 155 pounds, "The Ultimate Fighter 8" finalist Phillipe Nover told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he's staying put.

"I definitely want to stay at lightweight," Nover said.

Without including the total number of "The Ultimate Fighter" cast members who have eventually found success in different weight classes than their original choice, the number of season winners who have moved on is somewhat surprising.

Season one winner Diego Sanchez, season two winner Rashad Evans, season three winner Michael Bisping and season six winner Mac Danzig have all since competed at different weights than their original division in the UFC.

And while Nover has competed as high as 185 pounds, the New Yorker is sure he will not be the next fighter on that list should he be victorious in his bout with Efrain Escudero.

"At 185 (pounds), I felt like I had a lot of power, but I didn't feel like I had the speed,"Nover said. "At 170 (pounds), I didn't feel as light as I wanted. I wasn't light on my toes. But now I feel like I am strong as I was at 185 (pounds) and fast as can be. I feel like I've got the best of both worlds."

While Nover admits the drop to 155 pounds was difficult -- and also to blame for the now-infamous moment in which he fainted during the season's first episode -- the undefeated fighter believes the mental confidence he has at lightweight is as advantageous as his physical tools.

"I flip this switch somehow," Nover said. "I don't really know how it happens. I just turn in to more of this predator mentally. My mental focus is turning in to this animal.

"If you corner an animal -- and you're threatening its life -- it's going to fight its hardest, no matter what, to the death. And that's kind of what my mentality is. It's like I'm this cornered animal, and the only way out is through beating Efrain, or beating whatever opponent stands in my way. That's my mentality when I get in there."

Nover has garnered loads accolades and praise for his performance on this season of "The Ultimate Fighter." And while the former emergency room nurse admits the sacrifices were great to reach his current position, Nover believes he can be an inspiration for his fans.

"If you're a young athlete, or you have any dreams -- if you train every day and you sacrifice, if you cut out the people that you don't need and you link up with people you do need, and you link up with positive things in your life and just sacrifice and every day work towards that dream -- it can happen," Nover said. "If you just keep thinking about it and keep doing it, it's going to happen."

I picked Bader and Nover to win it, pretty good card.

I thought that Nover should have had a better gameplan going in, actually didn't look like he even had one.

Glad to see Vinny get his ass K'd though.
