Team Mayweather to Decide By Friday? Guerrero in Front

By Ryan Maquiñana

Sources have advised BoxingScene.com that Golden Boy officials and Floyd Mayweather’s team will hold a meeting in Los Angeles on Friday to discuss and likely finalize the WBC welterweight champion’s May 5 opponent.

WBO welterweight king Manny Pacquiao and WBC junior middleweight titlist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are still in the mix, but WBA/WBO interim lightweight boss Robert Guerrero has reportedly stepped to the forefront.

Pacquiao has stated to Eddie Alinea of PhilBoxing.com that he will meet with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum on Tuesday and “insist” to his promoter that the fight with Mayweather “be given the preference” over any other options.

However, given Arum’s acrimonious relationship with Mayweather, time is running out on a megaclash between the two pay-per-view superstars in the immediate future.

According to the source, the decision could be announced even earlier than Friday if Mayweather can agree to terms with either Guerrero or Alvarez, both of whom are Golden Boy fighters.

Mayweather was originally scheduled to begin a 90-day sentence in a Las Vegas jail cell on January 6 as a result of pleading guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

However, Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa granted the request of Mayweather’s attorney Richard Wright to hold off sentencing so that his client could go on with a bout that he argued would bring in more than $100 million to the local economy.

Why does anyone believe these reports? First it was Erik Morales and now it's Guerrero. Mayweather is not fighting no damn Guerrero.

I don't think he will either, but I wouldn't post an article unless it was from a legit source (I don't post blog shit or stuff from some biased website, etc.). The more I think about it the more I think it will be canelo. It will be someone on Golden Boy's roster.

Pacquiao Ready: I Will Tell Arum I Want Mayweather Next!

By Edward Chaykovsky

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is set to have a meeting with his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, and adviser Michael Koncz, in the next few days in the Philippines. Arum will present a list with four potential opponents for Pacquiao's next fight, including Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson, Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao told reporter Eddie Alinea of philboxing.com that he plans to request a mega-fight with WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and he also plans to direct Arum to give Mayweather a higher preference above the four listed opponents.

Mayeather is scheduled to fight on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“I‘ve said this over and over before and I’m saying this again, I want Floyd Mayweather Jr. to be my next opponent and I haven’t changed my choice despite recent developments,” Pacquiao told the site.

“I am meeting with my promoter, Bob Arum on Tuesday and I will insist that the fight with Mayweather be given the preference than the four others in the list I will fight next. It’s not really fair for some quarters to blame me if, in the long run, the fight wouldn’t push through.

“When Arum sits in the negotiation table, he will be laying on the table all the conditions we want, which , everybody knew already are simple. That I will abide by his demand for drug testing. I am even agreeable to get lesser purse just so the fight would push through. In other words, as far as my side is concerned, there will be no problem.”

“We know, too, that Mayweather has no promoter. He negotiates by himself. So if the fight won’t be realized, it’s no longer because of me."

Why are you guys co-signing this bullshit?? Manny is not fighting Mayweather May 5th and probably he will never fight Mayweather. Read the article below.

Arum: Mayweather Won't Pay Canelo The Money He Wants
Posted by: Ronnie Nathanielsz on 1/9/2012 .

by Ronnie Nathanielsz

THE lawyer of Manny Pacquiao sees a bright side to the decision of Judge Melissa Saragosa in delaying the implementation of Floyd Mayweather’s 90-day jail sentence from Jan. 6 to June 1.

David Marroso refused to comment on the judge’s decision, but told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard: “I do know that we are focused on Manny’s lawsuit against Mayweather, correcting the horrible wrong the Mayweathers perpetrated against Manny by falsely accusing him of taking performance-enhancing drugs.”

“We are committed to restoring Manny’s legacy, which has been devastated by the lies told about him. Hopefully, today’s decision means our case can proceed to trial sooner rather than later,” Marroso said.

Even before Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa granted a request by Mayweather’s lawyers to postpone his incarceration until after a planned May 5 bout, Marroso said: “At this time, we are not aware of any reason, including Mayweather’s criminal situation, that would disrupt or delay Pacquiao’s defamation case from proceeding.”

He disclosed that Mayweather’s deposition had been taken and that he expected Pacquiao’s to be done, although no date had been set yet.

Meanwhile, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum arrives in Manila on Tuesday with Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz, to meet with the Filipino ring icon and discuss the available options for his next fight, including a possible megabuck showdown with Mayweather in November.Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard today that he knows Mayweather wants to do the fight in November, noting that the American will need a tune-up fight before facing Pacquiao.

“The Mayweather camp was trying to figure out who he fights and they would probably pick Robert Guerrero, because he (Mayweather) won’t pay Canelo Alvarez the money he (Alvarez) wants,” said Arum.

Arum referred to stories blaming him for standing in the way of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on May 5 as “nonsense.”

Arum said that last December, he was already looking at a fight in late May or early June for Pacquiao because May 5, which was the celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the US, was too early.

“May 5 is certainly too early. Manny is not going to be able to really spar safely until the beginning of April because of the nasty cut he suffered on his eyebrow in the Juan Manuel Marquez fight. That cut required 28 stitches,” said Arum.

The promoter also mentioned the fact that they planned to build a 45,000-seat open-air venue near the Wynn Hotel and Casino along the Las Vegas strip since the MGM Grand could only accommodate 16,000 for the fight, which boxing fans have been clamoring for over the past couple of years.

So please stop co-signing this Top Rank media bullshit. Manny is not fighting Mayweather and if his scary does it will be in November. Why does Manny fans fall for the same media games by Top Rank and Manny over and over again. Really these are the same bullshit ducking Mayweather media games that Top Rank has been using for 2 years now.

The article was posted on boxingscene today but it's from yesterday. Regardless it was prior to when pac said he's going to tell arum he wants Floyd. But yeah I agree it doesn't seem likely for may.

I understand Mayweather's sense of urgency in getting a fight booked ASAP, but why not wait until Uncle Bob and Pacquiao reach out or announce anything, before finding another opponent.

Postponing the sentence only made sense to me if they were going to at least attempt to make the Pacquiao fight. Any other fight besides that would be a waste, and another fight that nobody is asking for.

well, in cotto's defense he went toe-to-toe with Pacquiao and got knocked down twice so he tried to switch it up and "box" rather than get KTFO. Against Margarito he was fighting a guy who was a lot bigger than him and to his credit he boxed exactly as he should and did it beautifully. It wasn't much different than how pacquiao boxed margarito and pac got a lot of praise for his performance.

I agree though cotto vs floyd is a mismatch.

Copy and pasted from Floyd Mayweather's facebook:

"Manny Pacquiao I'm calling you out let's fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see. My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk."
