Do you answer honestly? Or do you always reply with a positive no matter what? Do you then always follow up by asking them how they are?

I'm of the opinion that 1 - people don't care and 2 - it has become so much of a part of a greeting to ask how you are that it doesn't matter.

On at least one occation I've said "hi, how are you?" they reply with "good, how are you?" and I've replied back "good, how are you?" even though they already answered.

I usually respond with a, "alright I guess" or a "Im doing alright, cant complain". And then when they ask why is that just a "Even if I did no one will listen". So then its a little joke and it usually gets them to shut up or respond with a "Aint that right"
But yea I do usually ask How about you?
I work at a liquor store, so I get this shit all fucking day

two ways to handle it.

1 - give the buulshit "good and you?" and have to do this daily with that person.

OR

2 - tell em how you REALLY are doing. "not so good. this morning i got up and threw up a bunch of yellow acidic stomach bile cause im drastically slowing down my opiate use. but then i got on the computer for a while and was looking at porn and jerking off but i kept having to take a diarahea shit and had bubble guts so i stopped and handled the horrible shit i took. the shit was so bad i decided to take a shower and finished jerking off in there. later i got on the computer and saw this kid that wanted people to harass his sister so i took a picture of my asshole and sent it to her. i'm headed over to SF here in a lil bit to pick up some methadone from a buddy that owes me. my only worries are that i dont have to keep getting off BART to take another diarahea shit. how are you doing?"

after that answer i bet the next time you run into them they will act like theyre texting someone or act like theyre busy or some shit.

usually i just say "fine", unless it's somebody i know well, who i think would genuinely care about any details.

but if it's a random/casual acquaintance i doubt they really give a fuck.

if i know you ill respond with how im feeling, if i aint doin too great ill let people know without being too much of a downer, ill mention the positives right after

if i dont know you im prolly just gonna be like 'posted..'

some people ask me how im doin cuz theyre aware of the shit im goin through so theyre asking sincerely, others its a greeting

i can usually see it in peoples faces if they meant the question to have an actual answer
