Basically the in the box VS out the box debate has been ongoing. It deals with producers who use computers to record music.....so some mix in the computer and print or burn to a c.d. Some are critical of this and feel the digital realm is too sterile...so dependent on how many out puts there interface has they run audio out through that...If they have an apogee with 16 outs...if they have 48 tracks they may group sounds together and assign them to an individual output...they run the outputs to a summing buss.( usually a line type mixer..check the neve 8816..but could be their favorite mixer) then they mix using the anaolg circuitry of the summing buss or mixer and if they have great convertors they may record what comes out the stereo outpust on the summing buss back into the computer or just to a masterlink or something like that. Bob Katz says that you will get the same benefits if you just mix in the box run the final out the computer through stereo outs and into a dope EQ or Mic Pre...and then back into computer or master link...the problem with running it back into the computer is its been said if you have cheap convertors for you AD...then it may not get best results....thats why you can run it into a masterlink..used they run about 400 and the convertors are pretty good.
