1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000......i mean, i dont really know, as far as a label stand point, how many records do u sell before u start to see a healthy return on your money that u invested in your making of the album...i remember KVE saying they hardly made shit on the YGD albums, and hes one of the most recognizable arstists in the cali underground scene...so how many records does it take? how many of these underground artists are making there projected #s?

i think if an indie can move 10K units that's pretty damn good, especially if they up and coming and ain't got no radio play etc...

if you somewhat established indie, meaning you dropped a record before and got somewhat of a fanbase you should do 40-50K units without major disribution

^^^^nah i think just around 10-15k is good for an indie record wit no distribution
SHOW ME A LABEL MOVING 10-15 CDS WITHOUT DISTRO, THAT AINT HAPPENING. NOW AND DAYS A WESTCOAST ARTIST MOVING 10,000 PLUS IS AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. THIS GAME, FOR THE WESTCOAST ATLEAST, IS VERY HARD RIGHT NOW.

P.S.
THIS IS A GREAT TOPIC

true i have an interview with san quinn saying he moving 20 - 25 thousand an album! so that must be good if he still in the game doing what he do ya know? otherwise he wouldn't continue to do it if he wasn't making any $. plus they can make a lot of $ of they shows too! there is just hella competition plus with all the bootleggin going on it's hella hard. that's why i'm hella suprise even artists like 50 cent & game moving the #'s they move with all the bootleggin. 50 did 10 mill with "get rich" that's krazy $. especially for rap/ hip hop #'s!

I would say movin 10,000-15,000 units would be a huge accomplishment by an indi..

5000 is great

1000-2,000 is good (trust it can be hard to sell independently)

200 is definitely booboo

^^^ all of them have been around for a long time too..

That's longevity. They've had a chance to build their fan base and taken advantage.

A lot of rappers lie about their soundscans, so your guess is as good as mine about some of these independents

You Sale Units On Sound Scans But U Also Sale Units In The Streets From The Mom And Pop Stores That Dont Get Counted In Soundscan So Actually Some Underground Niggaz Is Doing Kool IMO, 2 or 3 Thousand With Sound Scan And A Couple Thousand In The Streets, Some Niggaz Is Really Eating...

Most Mom And Pop Stores Dont Have Sound Scan Capabilities Or Has Not Registered For It, They Just Sale The CD's Never Scan Them So They Can Count In The System...

question for any nigga in the game:

whats the incentive(s) of being in the independent game as opposed to major labels?

from a personal stand point i can name a few but im not in the game and i dont know how the numbers work etc so i just wanted to get some feedbacc from a ceo, artist, or whateva..

p.s. this is a good thread

^^^ if you do good independently you can build a solid fan base and negotiate a much better deal with major labels..

OR..

if you sell well independently, you can make good cash (ex: if you sell 10,000 units, that's $100,000 dollars generated right there).. you can set your own release dates, tours and concepts of your album without 1 person saying a word

also some artists that sell well independently can't get major deals cuz record labels don't see potential growth out of that rapper's city or area, so they make that independent money (and let me tell you, people doin' it right are getting real nice checks)
