I usually start off any baby of the family/friends 1st bday present with a $100 savings bond. Getting babies expensive clothes is worthless cause they will just grow out of them within months. The colder months are ahead of us soon so if you get him clothes buy him some warm stuff. At his/or her age keyboard would be a great toys. Anything with sound or colors make great gifts. Or start up his dvd collection with disney or any popular children movies/cartoons....

around that age I got my son a little basketball hoop setup from leap frog, it said the alphabet, numbers, or 3 letter words depending on what setting....actually, there's this ball thing (http://www.shopping.com/xPO-LeapFrog_Leapfrog_Discovery_Ball) that my son still plays with (he plays a certain song then runs around in circles untill it stops, then plays it again) DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE CLOTHES! at this age its a waste, since they are growing out of things every 3 months at least....or take him to the toy store and let him pick out his own toys, those are usually the things my son plays with most as opposed to what's chosen for him

Just get a bunch of empty boxes.
A one year old boy will abandon all toys to play in a box! GUARANTEED!
Get the kid a big ass cardboard box to play in. The other gift givers will feel stupid after he plays in a cheap box for hours on end.

i have a 1 1/2 year old, and he is very advanced too...he loves books. it may sound corny, but mayb elike some interactive books. my son likes the books with the buttons on em that play sounds and shit. or art stuff...my son LOVES art projects - chalk, crayons, markers, coloring books, whatever...hope that helps.
