On the real, IT STARTS WITH A PLAN!If an individual decides to release an album independently, he/she should really sit down and develop a game plan/approach. The biggest factor, imo, is the type of budget you are working with. That seperates the businessmen from the hobbyists.
Music is a risky business investment regardless of your talent level. IMO, you need to start with x amount of dollars as an investment, ie, not expecting a return for a few years. How will you spend x amount of dollars to create and sell your product? Can you turn lets say $10,000 into 15-20k giving your next project a bigger budget? Obviously there are many other variables involved in this equation, but I am sure you get the picture.
If you are trying to cover a few cities, it still requires a plan to obtain the results/revenue you are looking for so you can expand geographically with your music. Throwing together songs, buying some flyers/posters and doing a few shows here and there is not a plan.
Everyone is doing the same shit is why there is no growth, imo. No doubt everyone starts independent to some degree, but nowadays an independent is a person with a full time day job and a "music business" on the side. Technology created this monster. I am not knocking it, I am just saying part timing anything does not create full time results.
Be patient and learn the business side of things before jumping in. When I say business side, I am just talking basic small business practices. If your business plan is good, good/shitty music sells.lol. The proof is in the pudding....
