the midwest sound is usually dark and grimey with eerie slow beats and always gangsta and straight up gutter with a filthy sound...

The midwest is a melting pot...it doesn't have a sound. It takes bits a pieces from everything .
Both of those statements are true. But the Midwest is known for that fast-spittin, tongue flippin creepy shit. Thats the shit I love. And Indiana is on the rise. Check out my whole album at this link www.cdbaby.com/cmob

This is the way I look at it...

Twista, Do Or Die, Nelly, Tech, Rich, Eminem, Royce, Ric Jilla, etc... are all from the midwest and each has a different style for the most part. Midwest is everything...we take the best parts of the east, south, and west and mix it with our own. That's midwest to me.

Midwest Sound Definition

Sometimes when defining something, it doesn't hurt to start out by defining what it is NOT:

East Coast - Midwest beats tend to have a little bit more emphasis on the bass and less on the drums. The rappers don't have that East Coast accent and it tends to be a little faster.

Down South - The beats are similar in that they use heavier instruments but have less emphasis on the crunk sound. The lyrics are annunciated much more clearly because the rappers don't have that drawl on them at all, and the lyrics are much faster.

West Coast - There is a lot more gangsta feel to the beats, not nearly as happy, much more dark and grimey.

I like to think of Midwest rap being a great mixture of gangsta and soul, take groups like Tha Rellez or (RIP) The Reapa, there's a lot of nice deep singing going on in the choruses but the lyrics are straight gutter and the beats knock hard.

I also been readin Nterviews of rappers, of Midwest, sayin they sometimes get there sound N style from West n East but a lil late, for it takes awhile for that style gets to the Midwest.

I like how flipyawig said it. I couldnt described it no better.

For Midwest, Im really feelin the Chicago scene. Very well over looked.
