Producer, now that’s the most misused word in rap. This is one of the important lessons, so grab this one. Lot’s of cat’s go to studios for years attempting to record songs, make beats, record songs, make beats, etc. Hours and hours of production, but little to show for it. After years they finally come up with an album, why? Because somewhere along the way, they acquired production skills. Through trial and error, they have learned to produce. Maybe even become producers.

A producer is not what you might think it is. A producer is a person who produces something, whether you had a pizza delivered to me or you hand flipped the dough and baked the shit yourself, if you got it to me, you are the producer. Now that I made that seemingly useless analogy let me go back. The cats that come in the studio and are successful are the one’s that are produced. This means someone was in charge and over saw the project from concept to CD. This person took the vision and made it happen. For some this comes easy, for some it takes a lot of hard work and concentration. This person can be anyone from the person who made the beat to the rapper or singer, to someone who isn’t even on the song. In some instances the producer is the artist or group such as DJ Quick or Missie Elliot and sometimes artist hire outside "ears" to get it done. Digital recorded D’Angelo’s debut album and D’Angelo initiated most of the song writing and musicianship, but the record company hired Raphael Saadiq to produce it, to put a vision together. A skilled engineer was hired (Digital), so it would come out to perfection. To build a house, you need the right materials, labor, and plan. To make a record you need a producer.

^^^^^^^^ damn right. i noticed something about PRODUCERS. especially the ones who have blown up or are in the process of blowing up. each of them has BUSINESS savy,SKILLS when it comes to playing,skills when it comes to studio tech and skills when it comes down to vocals and performing. basically they are NOT one dimensional.........


which is why i chose to touchdown on every aspect of the game also.......

when im in the studio and we're mixing down a song i usually decided what noises and or sounds need to be turned up or down or if it needs more 808 . now im a producer says cats like digital. only i dont know shit about makin a beat . but then theres other people who say what i do is called being an arranger .????
but now i also finance projects ,set up studio time buy beats ,
make contacts , get covers started , get pictures taken, order promo ,do mail outs,make shirts,post on boards , press up cds,
arrange transportation,keep fliers & posters in record stores ,and try and keep artist out of trouble and make deadlines so that makes me an executive producer/c.e.o

confused yet ????????????

No, a "RECORD PRODUCER" is not "aka an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER". I am not going to explain this AGAIN but I will tell you that you are wrong and you need to go do your homework on what a producer/record producer is and what an executive producer is.

This has got to be one of THE STUPIDEST comments I've seen in this thread. Industry professionals do not write books full of lies & bullshit in an evil plot to deceive & mislead the readers.

I would write more but to be honest, I've lost pretty much interest in this discussion. These concepts are not hard to understand. The shit has been explained in simple english a number of times but yet a few of you still seem stuck at square 1. I just have to chalk that up and say if you don't get it by now then you probably arn't going to get it for a while.

By the way, in the credits for Dr. Dre's 2001 album, it says "ALL SONGS PRODUCED BY DR. DRE AND MEL-MAN". Then for each individual song it lists "MUSICIAN" credits. Bass, keyboards, guitar, percussion, etc. Explain this to me...If a producer is defined by who actually played the instruments then how come those credits don't read 'ALL SONGS PRODUCED BY DR. DRE, MEL-MAN, MIKE ELIZONDO, SCOTT STORCH, CAMARA KAMBON, SEAN CRUSE, TAKU HIRANO', etc etc?
