Speaking from a fans perspective i like mixtapes... fuck half the time its tighter than the original ...look at jeezy and several other artist who have established their career on the Mixtape circuit... to be all the way real from an artist perspective it takes less time and is a whole lot cheaper unless you have a good in house producer than actually cutting an album/////ALso fans are familiar with the beat so they are more opted to listen and if you don't have a large buzz this is important ... to grab the listeners attention so they are bobbin to it regardless it is almost a marketing technique to flood the streets with a couple or few mixtapes in order to hype up your debute album that being said check out our "compilation with jacked beats" 24/7 Grind---<a href="http://www.bandspace.com/bands/22160">

Last of all ---- I agree i think it is a serious problem if an artist relies strictly on mixtapes and never takes that step forward and actually pursues the "real thing" but lets face it mixtapes are a part of promotion

If you putting out GOOD mixtapes then I'm all for it. But the problem at hand is that over half these things are garbage. That is why DJ's are mad, not because we're "not needed" but because the name mixtape doesn't hold as much weight as it once did because people flooded the market with crap. From a fan's perspective, before I got serious about being a DJ, I loved any mixtape that had blends. It would make me listen to shit that was on the radio that I really didn't like, but when they added scratches, effects, blends etc, it made me actually enjoy listening to it. I could be biased because I always liked that shit, but I think most people do. That's a pointer for some of you artists out there putting out mixtapes. Like D-Sane or whoever said earlier to at least get a DJ to blend the shit together. If you thought your mixtape sounded good before then wait till you get a good DJ to put it together.

I feel that, because I got a D.J who CD-X(CD scratches) on kat's mixtapes to give it that feel, but kats just want to go from one song to the next. A perfect mixtape to me would consist of:

1- Origianl music thats free before the album
2- Hot freestyles (preferrably recorded on the spot)
3- Original beats showcasing upcoming producers
4- Re-makes/spoofs of orignal tracks
5- exclusive remixes(Hot song feat. _________)
6- Blends/Mixes to transition to each song.
7- A Live Ass Host(preferrably a D.J)

Problem is... you get a kid with Kazza or whatever, they record to everyones beat, because they don't have beats, and put it together and ask for money for it! I understand, because my potna is a D.J(who hates CD's and the local rappers who ask him to play them.). There is no mixtape handbook, so let the weak perish, and those who know the structure and pay attention shall prosper.

Yo great topic D-Sane. I miss B-Mello mixtapes. Scene, Topspin, SupaSam, Funkdaddy, are doing it. So basically whatever you are doing to be called a mixtape a DJ should be hosting it and it should be mixed together.

If i can get my money up, I'm interested in doing NY-Style mixtapes here in the NW. But Video Production and a Website is already a full plate, financially. I'd need to get a whole lot of outside money, and I'm not ready to ask for or accept that yet. So we'll see.

Ahh yes.....time for another D-Sane rant!! Somebody has to attempt to set the game straight once in a while.

So....does anybody around here know? I see all this talk about mixtape this and mixtape that....frankly I'm gettin' tired of seeing this wack shit. What is the infatuation with mixtapes that has developed in the past couple years?

Do people realize that mixtapes have been around for like 20+ years? Why do you think they're called mixTAPES? I used to make mixtapes my damn self when I was in high school for my friends (I used to DJ back in 1988 for all of you who don't know).

Let's explore the term mixtape.

MIX = To combine or blend. Usually done by a DJ
TAPE = Well....for 2005 terms we'll allow it to refer to any form of media available. i.e. CD, MP3, etc

A shitload of these so-called mixtapes aren't really mixtapes. Most of them are compilations. A *REAL* mixtape consists of a DJ mixing songs together / hosting it. The songs are usually (I say usually because mixtapes have evolved a bit) songs that are well known and have been remixed or blended. New York DJ's took it one step further by throwin' in an occasional freestyle track from a hot MC or hot up and comer. This...as we all know...is how several rappers have made themselves popular. 50 Cent for example.

Anywayz.....call your "mixtape" what it is! It's a *COMPILATION* with jacked beats! Do you think you're gonna get a deal because you did a so-called mixtape? Are you doin' it just because everybody else is? Maybe that's half your problem?

Do it right or cut the fuckin' crap. Good day......
I'm glad that my MIX TAPE or CD(as tapes have become out of style) is actually mixed, blended, and actually hosted by a legitimate DJ. It's always good to keep the actual elements of hip-hop in consideration when you are doing certain things pertaining to hip-hop. It's good to see that D-Sane continues to attempt the educate people as to what things actually mean, and how they are suppossed to be done. Keep the information coming.
