can anybody tell me the pros and cons and advantages to using each method.
i can buy my homies 1680 for cheap $500-$600....

can any body tell me if/how a computer set up would be any better quality and versatility wise....
what kind of comp set up can i get for $600?
and how would one in that price range compare to the vs1680....

THATS A HARD ONE........I WOULD GO WITH THE VS. HERES WHY.

NO CRASHES.
NO *NEED* FOR AN EXTERNAL MIXER
NO NEED FOR A SOUND CARD.

BUT IN REGARDS TO A PC YOU HAVE:

MORE PROGRAMS TO CHOOSE FROM
MORE TRACKS (IF YOUR HD ALLOWS IT)
POSSIBLY A BETTER SOUND (DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU ARE RUNNING IT THORUGH).

IF YOU CAN SNATCH ONE FOR $600 U BETTER DO IT. DOES IT COME WITH THE FX CARDS?

:h:

PS I USE *BOTH* A PC AND VS IN MY SETUP. I TRACK TO THE VS AND SEQUENCE ON THE PC. I WILL LET YOU HEAR THE QUALITY OF A VS TRACK WITH NO PROCESSING (EQ,COMPRESSION ETC ETC ETC) LATER ON THIS WEEK.

OH COY! My favorite subject! Maybe me and Heresy can argue until we're blue in the face again?

Roll with the PC.......you'll be alot happier in the end. I haven't had a crash since I upgraded to Windows XP Pro.

And yeah..... www.pricewatch.com is the place to go when lookin' for computer parts. I custom built both of my PC's with parts found on that site.....and saved alot of $$$$$$$$$$

im no pro but it doesnt take a real smart individual to realize that 5 or 600 is a steal and worth getting to resell at least.

I switched from a VS840 to a PC I built with Pro Tools and a Digi 001. I prefer the PC because it's scalable, it's easy to upgrade. The computer seemed to be a better choice in the long run... Plus I've been doing software support/development/testing for a long time so I know how to build em and work with em pretty easily.

ok peep

go here and peep this:

http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/THE8THFLOOR/

the beat is called HERESY&SHOHEI CONNECT. this si something that shohei and myself were working on. i came with the music and he was to supply the lyrics. however he is no longer rapping so the beat is OPEN.

the beat was recorded on a vs880ex and it wasnt multitracked at all. in fact the beat was sent to the vs via left and right channels (from my synth) only. it was recorded in 20 bit format and recorded in the mt1 recording mode (not the best recording mode). mt1 is the mode used for compressed audio (not to be confused with dynamic compression).

no equalizing, limiting, compression, gating, filtering etc etc etc was used on this track.

once i recorded the track and burned it to cd i ripped it into sound forge. from sound forge i converted it to an mp3.

so it went like this

keyboard-->vs880ex-->cd-->mp3 (128).

tell me how you think it sounds.

keep in mind it has yet to be processed/mixed

if you edit alot of your shit, i'd go with a computer...... i have a Roland VS-880 and it's a real tedious task to try and copy audio and paste it in different locations..... or deleting portions of a track..... while on a computer, you can drag and drop, copy and paste, and edit things in seconds in what would take up to 5 minutes on a VS, especially if you're not used to it.....

but then again, all this just might be a small thing to some people on here, so.......

Any Digital Work Station around 1 grand isn't really worth it, if you are gonna get a DWS you gotta go full works w/ the Roland VS-2480 ... Built in 80GB HD, (removable & replacable) , 24 tracks w* 999 V-tracks on each, shit is unlimited, you could store 3 albums on the mofo and use the burner for backups etc, you can also hookup a cpu monitor to it and the interface on that is dope.. you can sometimes hook mouses up to them and use it like a computer software program when you mix, it has class A pre-amps in it, its really all you need... cost a shiny pencil but if your serious then save up, probably only take a couple months.

I heard the Digi's had mad issues, plus you gotta have a computer thats up to date, etc... you would probably end up spending more.

Computers are still good though, but the Roland personally kills competition at this time..

If you got 800, get a new computer specifically for music, 800$ for digital recorder isn't worth it.

I use Pro Tools/Digi 001 and this is the system I built for it:

Case - $50
Asus A7V333 Motherboard - $110
512 MB PC-2700 Mushkin RAM - $165
Video Card - $60
Western Digital 60 GB Hard Drive - $115
Virtually Indestructible Keyboard - $40
Logitech Trackball Mouse - $50
24X CD-RW Drive - $100
CD Drive - $40
Windows ME - Free (Got a copy from work)

Total - $730

I think this is everything I got on my recording PC... I posted that keyboard and mouse cuz they're quieter... The keyboard I have is made of rubber and doesn't make any noise when you type... And the mouse is one you don't have to move around so it's quiet too...

Check out http://duc.digidesign.com and look for the thread called Best Machine For Under $900 or something like that, they had a lot of good info in there...

By the way, back before I got a second PC, I had a scanner, printer, digital camera, DSL modem, a second sound card and hella software installed on this Pro Tools machine and they didn't cause a conflict.

^^^^what type of heatsink and fan do you use? i would be more concerned about the fan being quiet than the mouse or keyboard.

if anyone has a chance to snatch a vs for LESS than half price.....and they DONT do it........:dead:

i would suggest going with BOTH of them (if you have the cash)

with the setup that g-dubb listed the buyer is STILL missing one IMPORTANT thing.

soundcard/interface.

you CANT skimp and go CHEAP in this area. no time for soundblaster. so with that setup and a $150-$800 interface (like the pro tools set up) your already close to a grand or OVER a grand......

the good thing about the pc is your able to sequence/arrange run vst instruments etc etc etc. so they both have benifits.

by the way my pc setup is similar to g dubbs except i have 2 hard drives and i run a dual boot (98 and xp pro)

I'll double-check the fan next time I open the machine up, I had someone helping me set this system up so I'm not sure... It's pretty quiet, and the way it's set up under the desk the noise hasn't really been an issue.

I have a Soundblaster Live Platinum on that machine as the sound card, but I don't think it's even enabled, I just been using the Digi 001.
