Powell: Is suspected in two homicides.
Authorities have arrested a suspect in last summer's slaying of a Vallejo man whose bullet-ridden body was found in a parked van.
Troy Lee Powell, 25, of Menlo Park, is charged with killing 29-year-old Daniel Jamal Shropshire in August 2005, Solano County Deputy District Attorney John Kealy said Thursday. Powell was arrested earlier this month in Las Vegas and faces extradition to California.
On Thursday, Fremont police also named Powell as a suspect in January's slaying and robbery of a pawn shop owner. Powell may appear on those charges in Alameda County Superior Court as early as today, officials said.
Kealy said it was not clear when Solano County would have a chance to arraign Powell on the Vallejo charges. A Solano County warrant was issued for Powell's arrest on June 13, but Kealy declined

to say when or why he was identified as an official suspect.
"His name surfaced as a person of interest in the case fairly early on in the investigation," Kealy said.
Lt. Lori Lee, a Vallejo police spokeswoman, said Thursday that detectives from her agency recently interviewed Powell in Las Vegas, but had already determined he was a suspect in the Shropshire case. Lee said she did not know what led detectives to suspect Powell.
Officials declined to discuss a possible motive, nor would they say whether they believe Powell acted alone. Authorities have said earlier they were unsure if robbery was the motive, but said Shropshire's wallet, watch, jewelry and other personal items were still on him when he was found.
Shropshire's father, Ken Shropshire of San Jose, said Thursday that he was thrilled when authorities notified him of the arrest.
"I'm very ecstatic about it," the father said. "I'm glad something transpired."
The father said Powell's name was not familiar to the family.
Shropshire was shot at least 16 times in the early morning of Aug. 18, authorities said. Residents found his body in the driver's seat of a green van abandoned near Florida and Grennan streets. He had borrowed the van from a friend in exchange for working on it, authorities said.
During past interviews, officials said a set of decorative gold teeth found at the crime scene were key to solving Shropshire's slaying. But Kealy declined Thursday to discuss whether that evidence was linked to Powell.
