Antioch police took a Vallejo man into custody early today on suspicion of kidnapping three children from East Vallejo.
At about 10:41 p.m. Saturday, Bryant Jacobs, 27, carjacked Daniella Lofton's vehicle from the 200 block of Curtis and took her three children, police said in a statement.
The incident began as some sort of domestic disturbance, though the details of that remain unclear, Vallejo Lt. Eric Mortenson said in an interview.
"He had an off-and-on dating relationship with (Lofton) for a few years," said Mortenson, adding that Jacobs is not the father of the three children.
The children were 9 years old, 3 years old and 8 months old and were in the car at the time of the carjacking, Mortenson said. Detectives believe Jacobs intended to take the children along with the car because he had opportunities to let them go, Mortenson said.
The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the carjacked vehicle, a tan 1997 Lexus with the California license plate of 3TJU390, because of the abducted children, police said. He had been seen armed with a semi-automatic handgun, according to the statement.
Mortenson credited the Amber Alert for the safe return of the three children, as Jacobs' family members quickly called him and urged him to return them, Mortenson said.
Jacobs eventually gave the children to his sister, who then brought them to the Vallejo Police Department, according to the statement.
Lofton and her children are unharmed, Mortenson said.
At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Jacobs' sister was able to remove the three children from her brother and bring them to the Vallejo Police Department, police said.
CHP subsequently canceled the Amber Alert, and the kidnapping case became a manhunt, Mortenson said.
At about 5:30 a.m., Antioch officers spotted Jacobs in that city and arrested him without incident, Mortenson said.
Neither the handgun alleged to be in his possession nor the stolen Lexus was recovered, Mortenson said.
Jacobs was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of carjacking and three counts of kidnapping, police said. He also faces false impersonation and traffic-related charges in Contra Costa County, police said.
