Jon Fitch, who went five rounds with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in August, received notice Wednesday that the UFC has released him.

Fitch told Hardcore Sports Radio’s “Sports Rage” on Wednesday that he was cut from the promotion after he’d refused to sign an agreement that would have relinquished his likeness rights for a UFC video game.

Fitch said he submitted a signed bout agreement Tuesday to fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 94 on Jan. 31, but the UFC terminated it, along with his promotional contract.

“I had two fights left on my contract, but they always put a clause in the contract that if you lose a fight, they’re able to release you at any time after a loss,” Fitch told “Sports Rage” host Garbriel Morency. “That’s pretty standard with any organization, but it’s pretty incredible that they’d go to those lengths for something like this, over a video game.”

Fitch, a Purdue University wrestling standout, said his refusal to sign the agreement for a UFC video game -- set for release by THQ in 2010 -- wasn’t based on compensation.

“The video game agreement that they have that they wanted us to sign was basically we don‘t get anything for it,” he told Morency. “We get free publicity and promotion from the game, which is great, no problem. The problem is it’s a lifetime exclusive contract. That means we would never ever be able to work with any video game companies other than the one the UFC provides.”

Fitch told Hardcore Sports Radio he was not adverse to the contract necessarily, but in the way it was presented to his management.

“They basically kicked the door open, guns blazing, pointed it in our face and said, ‘Sign this or you’re going to pay,’” Fitch said.

Fitch said that, to his knowledge, UFC President Dana White had given his representatives the ultimatum to sign or be scrapped even though the fighter’s reps tried to negotiate a five or 10-year deal for the video game rights.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports on Wednesday, White said the UFC would no longer do business with the American Kickboxing Academy, Fitch’s San Jose-based fight team.

“We’re looking for guys who want to work with us and not against us, and frankly I’m just so [expletive] sick of this [expletive] it’s not even funny,” White told Yahoo Sports. “Affliction is still out there trying to build its company. Let [Fitch] go work with them. Let him see what he thinks of those [expletives]. [Expletive] him. These guys aren’t partners with us. [Expletive] them. All of them, every last [expletive] one of them.”

Christian Wellisch, an AKA teammate of Fitch, was also released on Wednesday, said Fitch. Wellisch had also received an agreement for a pending bout that was later retracted.

“They cut him from the organization first, I think as kind of a scare for me and [Josh] Koscheck and Cain [Velasquez],” said Fitch. “I guess Cain Velasquez wouldn’t sign under his contract and they we’re saying that after his fight he was done and they weren’t going to re-up his contract. I think the same thing goes for Koscheck. I think they would drop him right now too, if he wasn’t fighting on the 10th, if he wasn’t headlining that show –- so they can’t drop him.”

Koscheck faces Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC “Fight for the Troops” on Dec. 10 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C.

Fitch had won eight straight fights before dropping a gutsy decision to St. Pierre. His undefeated run tied Royce Gracie’s for the most consecutive wins in the UFC.

With his dismissal, Fitch said he will likely lose 75-80 percent of his sponsorship monies. Earlier this year, Fitch and other AKA fighters were asked by the UFC to sign a separate merchandising agreement in perpetuity. Many of the squad declined the offer.

“I never wanted anything more than to fight in the UFC and be a UFC champ,” said Fitch. “I put in a lot of blood and guts and sweat and tears into this and this is my reward I guess.”

Dana White: ‘[Expletive]’ Jon Fitch for not signing video game agreement

“We’re looking for guys who want to work with us and not against us, and frankly I’m just so [expletive] sick of this [expletive] it’s not even funny. Affliction is still out there trying to build its company. Let [Fitch] go work with them. Let him see what he thinks of those [expletives]. [Expletive] him. These guys aren’t partners with us. [Expletive] them. All of them, every last [expletive] one of them…. I’m not a douche bag and I do a lot for these guys, a lot more than any of you will ever know. We’re in a horrible time in the economy now, and every guy with two nickels to rub together is making a run at us. We’ve worked too hard, given too much, to let certain guys come in and [expletive] with that.”

– UFC President Dana White fumes via Yahoo!Sports.com about the situation that went down earlier this evening surrounding the release of Jon Fitch for not signing an agreement that would give the promotion exclusive lifetime video game rights to his name and likeness. White appears to be most heated about the management team that represents most of the fighters out of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), Zinkin Entertainment. In fact, he says that with the exception of Chuck Liddell, Mike Swick and more than likely Forrest Griffin (who are also represented by Zinkin Entertainment) that other top fighters such as Josh Koscheck and Cain Velasquez are also possibly on the outs. “Kos,” as of press time, is still scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” on December 13. However, after reading these comments who knows what the future holds.

did you read the contract? that shit is basically spitting in the fighter's face and saying we own you for life, theyve done so much for the sport but the fighters get paid JACK SHIT compared to Boxing, they make like 15k PER seat ring side at every fight, they sell out, make millions off pay per view but cant cash out their fighters?

Zuffa is stingy.

goddamnit just when I finally started to like Dana he goes and starts this shit again. If they cut Cain they're fucking retarded with how shallow the heavyweights already are, and for how fucking good he's going to be over the next few years.

If you pay fighters too much, you end up like Affliction, IFL, EliteXC and you go out of business.

They have to make a profit if you want them to continue to put on fights. You also don't want to see MMA turn into what boxing is now. That'd be the worst.

Affliction is not dead. no shit the organizations have to make profit to set up fights but you gotta pay the fighters good remember it's the fighters putting there health on the line to put asses in seats and make the org big money. You should read the ufc likeness contract which is posted in this thread it's a fucking slave contract.

PROFIT IS THE NAME OF THE GAME BUT THE UFC DONT CUT NO SLACK WITH THEIR FIGHTERS. REAL DISRESPECTFUL ON THEIR TREATMENT OF FIGHTERS.

Our way or the highway = UFC

It's sad cause fitch is a awesome fighter. IMO.

Wow they doing them dirty w/ that. no royalties or license payments on games or dvd's, and lifetime. This is very bad for the fighters & the sport. I feel sorry for whomever signs it. Zuffa is gaining everything while the fighters are getting stripped for LIFE.

UFC can't keep this up for long.

Eventually another organization is going to come in and put this whole thing together, take care of their fighters, and take over UFC's MMA market share.

You can only abuse your employees so long before they will go somewhere else.

Thats dirty. The UFC really does take full advantage of its standing in the sport.

This is what happens when a company monopolizes. All bad.

Hopefully these guys, who are all top tier fighters, will sign with Affliction and make the competition that much stronger.

Also, it would probably help UFC fighters to form some kind of a fighters association, like they have in the NBA, NFL, etc. The UFC wouldn't drop everyone, if everyone was united.

even Randy Couture thinks zuffa is grimey, i mean look at his hold out, eventually he came back because he realized he was violating part of his contract. Lots of fighters have said it.. most recently wasnt it Roger Huerta too?

I mean most of these fighters, im not talking about the big name fighters either.. they make what.. 2-10k a fight plus a bonus for winning knock out of the night, submission, etc. sometimes you dont even make 10k if you lose.. You lose both ways, money AND if you're hurt the medical bills are much more than the shitty 2-5k you got. Im no saying they should be paid 20 million a fight, just saying to be more realistic.. like minimum 100k a fight, UFC makes 100 times more than that per event anyways, plus their promotion and marketing deals and all that licensing?

That UFC game, they got paid for it because the video game company had to pay them for the licensing. AND theyll probably see money from the sales made from each game as well.

its got nothing to do w/ being bigger than ufc. Once they sign it, Zuffa owns them/their name and character. They not only own them, but own them for LIFE. The fighters CAN NOT sell, sign or appear w/out zuffa consent. That means no footlocker deals/ red bull, ANYTHING, unless its zuffa approved. atleast thats what im getting from the pdf posted.

So if fighter signs, and ufc drops them a year from now, zuffa can put that fighter in a game or dvd w/out having to pay them royalties or license payments even in a game 10 years later.
