UFC brass says Demetrious Johnson could take title shot over Brian Bowles
LAS VEGAS – It's the inevitable question that surfaces each and every time a UFC champion wraps a belt around his waist: What's next?
And so it was for Dominick Cruz (18-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) following his UFC 132 victory former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber.
Many MMA pundits pointed to former WEC champ Brian Bowles (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) as the leading candidate to snag the next shot at the 135-pound belt, but UFC brass said that's not necessarily the case.
"They do this to me every press conference," White joked with UFC matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby when questioned by MMAjunkie.com as to whether Bowles would be next in line. "They want me to make the whole next card."
At that point, it was Shelby, the matchmaker responsible for booking the UFC's featherweight and bantamweight matchups (in addition to all of Strikeforce's contests), who offered another possibility.
"Could be Demetrious Johnson (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC)," Shelby told MMAjunkie.com.
Both fighters present a legitimate case.
Bowles lost his WEC title to Cruz in a March 2010 contest when a broken hand left the slugger unable to answer the bell for the third round. Bowles has since rattled off wins over Takeya Mizugaki and Damacio Page.
The 31-year-old Bowles appeared to injure his hand again during his Saturday night win over Mizugaki, complaining to his corner between rounds that the appendage was ailing. Another broken hand could certainly delay Bowles' title plans, but White seemed optimistic that the former WEC champ may have actually escaped unscathed.
"The only people that went to the hospital were (Shane) Roller and (Dong Hyun) Kim, so [Bowles] must be OK," White said. "And they were taken to the hospital, but nothing serious."
Meanwhile, the 5-foot-3 Johnson, often referred to as a future champion of the soon-to-come flyweight division, has been doing just fine at 135 pounds. After suffering an April 2010 decision loss to Brad Pickett in his Zuffa debut, Johnson has downed Miguel Torres, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, Page and Nick Pace in the past 10 months.
Of course, Johnson is dealing with his own health problems after suffering a fractured fibula in his May win over Torres.
"Mighty Mouse" is currently on crutches as his leg heals, though he is set to ask for doctors' clearance later this month.
So in short, the answer to what's next for Cruz isn't clear just yet. Whatever it is, you can be sure the champ will be ready – and he'll likely hope for another headlining role.
"We had something to show everyone in the world [at UFC 132] – that 135-pounders can headline a card, that 145-pounders can headline a card, and it will be exciting," Cruz said. "Just because we're little guys doesn't mean we can't scrap."
